When a screenshot test flags a visual change, the report may show what changed while the code review is happening in GitHub. The gh-pixel-diff extension aims to connect those steps by highlighting changed pixels in the PR image viewer, helping reviewers find the change without scanning a full-page screenshot. It can answer “did that button move, or did its padding change by a couple of pixels?”—but it cannot decide whether the change is a bug.

What does gh-pixel-diff add to GitHub’s image review?

GitHub already offers three ways to inspect image changes: 2-up displays the old and new images side by side, swipe reveals one image through the other, and onion skin blends them with opacity. Those views preserve useful visual context, but finding a small change in a long screenshot can take work. gh-pixel-diff adds explicit changed-pixel highlighting and a count of changed pixels inside the review workflow.

The extension’s author, Peter Radilov, describes additional controls: a view focused on changed regions, stepping from one region to the next, zooming and panning, and before, after, diff, three-column, and overlay modes. Reviewers can adjust the comparison threshold and highlight colors, and export a PNG to attach to a review comment. These features help locate and discuss image-level changes; they do not establish whether a visual change is intentional or correct.

How does the comparison work?

Radilov says the extension uses pixelmatch to compare the two images and runs the comparison in a Web Worker when available, with a main-thread fallback. In GitHub, the image comparison appears in an iframe on viewscreen.githubusercontent.com. The extension reads the enc_url1 and enc_url2 parameters and uses the image URLs supplied by GitHub, including signed URLs for images in private repositories. GitLab’s image viewer is on the merge-request page instead, but the comparison code is shared.

A pixel comparison reports differences between image data, not the cause of those differences. If a new block pushes content downward, many pixels below it may differ even if the rest of the page is otherwise unchanged. A large changed-pixel count can therefore reflect a layout shift rather than many independent defects.

What is the optional row-matching setting?

The extension includes an experimental, opt-in alignment heuristic that attempts to match unique horizontal pixel rows. Its goal is to reduce false emphasis caused by vertical shifts and separate those shifts from other changes. It is not a model of page layout: repeated content or blank areas can lead to incorrect matches, and enabling the setting changes what the reported difference count measures. Radilov describes it as “a heuristic, not an understanding of the page’s layout.” The setting is off by default.

Which services and browsers does it support?

Radilov says gh-pixel-diff supports GitHub and GitLab, including configured self-hosted GitLab and GitHub Enterprise instances. The project links to its Chrome Web Store route and its Firefox Add-ons route. The project also describes manual Safari installation through Xcode. Store availability and browser compatibility can change, so check the relevant listing or project instructions for current status before installing.

The developer says image comparisons happen locally in the browser, without an image-processing server or analytics. That is the developer’s disclosure, not an independent privacy audit. The Chrome Web Store listing likewise describes local processing; a listing statement should not be treated as third-party verification.

When should you still open the screenshot test report?

A highlighted diff can help pinpoint where an image changed, but it is not a verdict on the change and may not provide the report’s surrounding context. Use the PR view to locate and discuss changed areas; consult the test report when you need details it contains beyond the compared images. The useful question is whether highlighting the diff in the PR covers your review—or whether you still need the report for context.
