In the Pixel Camera app, swiping up on the viewfinder can reveal quick settings—but the options vary by phone and Camera app version. A report about Pixel Camera 9.2 described flash, Top Shot, timer, and aspect ratio in its swipe-up preferences sheet; Google does not document a fixed six-item tray for every Pixel. Here are six useful controls, with the right path to find each one if it is not in your swipe-up panel.
What does swiping up in Pixel Camera do?
Open Camera in Photo mode and swipe up on the viewfinder to inspect the settings available on your device. In Pixel Camera 9.2, a December 2023 report described a preferences sheet with flash, Top Shot, timer, and ratio options (9to5Google’s Pixel Camera 9.2 report). That is a version-specific description, not a guarantee that every Pixel displays those controls there.
Google’s Camera help documents settings across the app, but does not promise a universal six-option swipe-up menu. If a control is missing, check your phone model, Camera app version, and the app’s settings rather than assuming the gesture failed (Google Pixel Camera Help: Change your Camera app settings). The swipe-up settings sheet is also separate from the customizable quick-access buttons Google documents in the viewfinder.
Six useful Pixel camera controls and where to find them
| Control | What it does | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Flash | Controls flash for a shot. | May appear in the swipe-up sheet on some app versions; Google also documents it among Camera settings. |
| Top Shot | Provides a way to select a preferred moment from a moving or action-filled scene, where supported. | Reported in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet; availability depends on device and app version. |
| Timer | Delays capture so you can get into position or steady the phone. | Reported in the swipe-up sheet; a separate five-second timer is used for Night Sight astrophotography. |
| Aspect ratio | Changes the image’s framing. | Camera settings control, then choose Wide crop (16:9) or Full image (4:3). |
| RAW + JPEG | Saves a RAW file alongside a JPEG for compatible workflows. | Enable the RAW/JPEG control in Advanced settings, then turn on RAW + JPEG; the setup path differs on Pixel 8 Pro. |
| Gridlines | Adds a viewfinder grid to help compose a shot. | Settings, More settings, Grid type. |
1. Flash
Flash is one of the options a Pixel Camera 9.2 report placed in the swipe-up preferences sheet. Google also documents flash in Camera settings, so look there if it is not visible in the panel. Its location can change with the app interface and device (Google Pixel Camera Help).
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
2. Top Shot
Top Shot was also identified in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet. It is not safe to assume it is available on every Pixel or shown in the same place: camera features and controls depend on the device and software. Google’s device guidance, for example, lists model restrictions for features such as Macro Focus and manual lens selection (Google Pixel Camera Help: Take high quality photos).
3. Timer
A timer is another swipe-up option reported for Pixel Camera 9.2. Night Sight astrophotography has a specific five-second timer: Google says it gives you time to set the phone on a steady surface facing the sky. This is part of the astrophotography workflow, not evidence that every timer control has the same duration or location (Google Pixel Camera Help: Take photos in low light or at night).
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
4. Aspect ratio
Google documents two photo framing choices: Wide crop (16:9) and Full image (4:3). Open the Camera settings control and choose the ratio. Changing the ratio changes how the image is framed or cropped; it does not, by itself, change the camera sensor or guarantee better image quality (Google Pixel Camera Help).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. RAW + JPEG
RAW + JPEG is a deeper setting, not a verified universal swipe-up shortcut. On most supported models, enable the RAW/JPEG control under Advanced settings, then turn on RAW + JPEG. Google notes a different setup path for Pixel 8 Pro, so follow the controls shown on your phone rather than expecting identical menus on every model (Google Pixel Camera Help).
6. Gridlines
Gridlines help with composition but are not established as a standard swipe-up item. In Camera settings, go to More settings, then Grid type, and select a grid. The available choices can depend on the app version (Google Pixel Camera Help).
Quick-access controls are a different feature
Google documents up to four customizable quick-access controls in the viewfinder, with two on each side. These buttons are distinct from the settings sheet opened by swiping up; the count of quick-access controls does not describe how many options appear in that sheet. Google’s help page explains how to enable and customize them (Google Pixel Camera Help).

- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
Why your Pixel may show different options
- Model eligibility: Some camera features are limited to particular devices, and Google documents device-specific restrictions for features such as Macro Focus and manual lens selection (Google Pixel Camera Help).
- Camera app release: The swipe-up examples above come from reporting on Pixel Camera 9.2, published December 4, 2023; they should not be treated as a current universal menu specification (9to5Google).
- Different settings paths: RAW/JPEG and grid type are documented in deeper settings, while quick-access buttons are a separate viewfinder feature.
Google’s current documentation also describes some features as specific to newer device generations—for example, Camera Looks is documented for the Pixel 11 series—another reason not to expect identical menus across the Pixel range (Google Pixel Camera Help).
