On a Pixel, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning are separate location-service controls—not the main Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switches. You can turn either off under Settings > Location > Location services. Google says the scans can help apps get location information, but its published guidance does not quantify battery savings, so disabling them is an optional experiment, not a guaranteed way to add hours.
What the two scanning settings do
Google describes their purpose this way: “To help apps get better location info, you can let your phone scan for nearby Wi-Fi access points or Bluetooth devices.” The controls let the phone use nearby wireless signals for location assistance; Google’s guidance does not establish that they scan continuously or specify how often scans occur. These settings are distinct from the main Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controls. Turning off scanning does not, by itself, turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Location, or Location Accuracy.

- Open Settings on your Pixel.
- Tap Location, then Location services.
- Tap Wi-Fi scanning and switch it off.
- Return to Location services, tap Bluetooth scanning, and switch it off if you want to disable that scan too.
Menu labels can vary by software release or language. If the path differs on your phone, search Settings for “Wi-Fi scanning” or “Bluetooth scanning.” The controls are independent, so you can try turning off one at a time and check your own battery usage before deciding whether to change the other.

What changes when scanning is off
Location assistance
Turning off one or both scans removes that scan as an option for location assistance. Google separately explains that Location Accuracy can use wireless signals, including Wi-Fi and mobile networks, along with device sensors. Its warning that disabling Location Accuracy can affect the availability or accuracy of services such as Maps and finding a lost device applies to that broader setting; it should not be treated as a direct description of the effect of disabling only Wi-Fi or Bluetooth scanning. Automatic Wi-Fi near saved networks
Google says automatic Wi-Fi enablement near saved networks requires Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. If you depend on the phone turning Wi-Fi on automatically when you are near a saved network, keep the relevant scanning settings enabled. Will switching them off add hours of battery life?
There is no published battery-life figure in the reviewed Google guidance for turning off Wi-Fi scanning, Bluetooth scanning, or both. That means there is no supported “hours saved” estimate to promise. The practical result, if any, will depend on your phone and usage; treat the change as a personal test rather than a proven battery fix.

If your Pixel battery is still draining quickly
- Check Settings > Battery > Battery usage to see which apps use the most power, including in the background. Google Pixel Phone Help: Fix battery drain problem
