On a Pixel 9, a screen saver is a configurable display for the phone while it is charging or docked; Always-on Display (AOD) is for glancing at the time and supported lock-screen information while the phone is idle. Choose the screen saver for a charging-time clock, photos, weather, or controls. Choose AOD for glanceable information without setting up a charging display. They are separate features, and Google’s guidance does not establish an exact automatic handoff or delay between them.

How the two displays differ

The practical difference is their context. A screen saver is an idle display you configure for charging or docking. AOD is a separate display setting that keeps time and some supported information available when the phone is otherwise idle. Neither name describes a single, interchangeable mode: each has its own settings and purpose.

Feature What it is for What it can show When it appears Best fit
Screen saver A configurable charging or docking display Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, or content from a compatible app When configured for charging or for being upright and charging; wireless-only use can also be selected A charging-time clock, photo frame, weather display, or home controls
Always-on Display A way to check the time and supported lock-screen information while the phone is idle Time and some lock-screen information; eligible At a Glance updates may also appear When AOD is enabled and the phone is otherwise idle; Google’s reviewed guidance does not specify a complete Pixel 9 transition sequence Quick glances at the time and eligible updates without configuring a charging display

Google’s screen saver setup guide lists the available screen saver types and charging conditions. Its Pixel display settings describe the separate AOD control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In short, the screen saver is something you choose and configure for a particular charging situation. AOD is a lock-screen display option for idle moments. The screen saver offers more deliberate choices about what the display presents; AOD is the more direct way to see the time and eligible lock-screen information. The fact that both can be enabled does not mean they are the same display or that one necessarily replaces the other in a fixed sequence.

What a Pixel 9 screen saver can show

Google’s current setup instructions list five screen saver choices: Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, and compatible apps. The selected type determines whether the display is useful as a simple time display, a personal photo frame, a weather view, or a way to reach home controls. Compatible-app content depends on having an app that supports the feature; the instructions do not promise that every app can appear.

These choices make the screen saver suited to different charging spots and habits. A clock keeps the display focused on time; Photos turns it into a frame; weather makes the display useful for a glance at conditions; and Home Controls surfaces supported controls. The screen saver setup page lets you review and reorder active screen savers, so the configured options can be managed rather than treated as one unchangeable display.

Clock and Home Controls

Choose Clock if you want a time-focused display while the phone is charging. Home Controls is the option for displaying supported home controls. The particular controls available depend on the home setup and the permissions or access required by the relevant services; Google’s screen saver instructions do not guarantee that every device or control will be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a control you expect is missing, first consider whether the relevant home service and device are available to the phone. The feature name does not imply that every smart-home device or action will automatically show up. For a simpler setup with fewer dependencies, Clock is the straightforward choice.

Photos and Pixel Weather

The Photos screen saver uses sources from Google Photos and needs access to photos and media. Pixel Weather needs location permission set to “Always allow” for real-time updates. If photos or weather do not appear as expected, check the required permission as well as the selected screen saver type.

Those permission requirements are worth checking during setup, not only after something goes wrong. Choosing Photos does not itself grant access to the images, and choosing Pixel Weather does not remove the need for location access. In particular, Google specifies “Always allow” for real-time weather updates. If you do not want to grant a permission, select a screen saver type that does not depend on it.

Compatible apps and changing the selected type

Some compatible apps can provide screen saver content, but app compatibility is a prerequisite rather than a general guarantee. You can review and reorder active screen savers in the setup page. Google also says screen saver types can be changed by swiping from the screen edge, which is useful if more than one type is active and you want to switch what is displayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When choosing among several active options, keep in mind that the list and its order are part of the configuration. Review them if the display is showing a different type than you expected. The swipe gesture is a way to change the displayed screen saver type; it is not a way to switch between AOD and screen saver settings.

What Always-on Display can show

AOD is intended for checking the time and some information on the lock screen while the screen is otherwise idle. The exact contents depend on the phone’s settings and eligible features; it should not be treated as a second screen saver or as a photo-frame mode.

At a Glance updates may appear on the lock screen and AOD when eligible. Google lists upcoming events and tasks, weather and severe weather warnings, event tickets, and commute or transit information. Availability can vary with location, language, settings, and permissions. For the categories and controls, see Google’s At a Glance help.

At a Glance is the source for those update categories, not a promise that every category will be present on every Pixel 9 at all times. An event, weather alert, ticket, or commute item can depend on eligibility and the relevant settings and permissions. If you want fewer updates, you can turn off or customize categories rather than treating the entire AOD as all-or-nothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not expect the Pixel 9 AOD to show the lock-screen wallpaper as a standard option. Google’s current lock-screen instructions specify that showing the wallpaper along with the date and time on AOD is available only on Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. That model-specific feature is not listed for Pixel 9. See Google’s lock-screen instructions.

When each one appears—and what is not specified

Google’s screen saver setup offers “While charging” and “While upright and charging” as display conditions, plus an option to restrict the screen saver to wireless charging. It also describes charging or docking as the context for a screen saver and names Pixel Stand 1st and 2nd gen as supported charging or docking contexts. A stand is optional: the setup guidance also allows use while charging without one.

The two timing choices let you match the screen saver to where and how the phone is charging. “While charging” is the broader charging condition; “While upright and charging” narrows it to the upright charging context. The additional wireless-only option is useful if you want to limit when the screen saver is used to wireless charging. These are screen saver conditions, not AOD triggers.

A Pixel Stand is therefore an optional way to keep the phone charging upright, not a requirement for using a screen saver. Google names both 1st- and 2nd-generation Pixel Stands in its charging or docking guidance, while also allowing the phone to use the feature when charging without a stand. If the phone is not in the situation selected in the screen saver settings, check that condition before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AOD is managed separately under Settings → Display & touch. The official display guidance provides a setting to turn it off, but does not lay out a complete Pixel 9 timeline for what happens as the phone moves among an active lock screen, AOD, screen saver, and screen-off states. It does not establish an exact delay, a guaranteed automatic handoff, or that AOD and a screen saver appear simultaneously. If the timing matters, check the behavior on your Pixel 9 with its installed software rather than relying on a universal sequence.

Screen saver behavior in a dark room

The screen saver settings can be configured to switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off when the room gets dark. This is a screen saver behavior; it is not evidence of a particular AOD behavior or a measured battery-life difference.

This low-light choice can help tailor the charging display to a bedroom or other dim space. Choose the low-light clock if you still want a clock there, or screen-off behavior if you prefer the screen saver to go dark. Do not assume that changing this option also changes AOD: the two features have separate settings and purposes.

Set up a screen saver on Pixel 9

  1. Open Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver.
  2. Turn on Use screen saver.
  3. Choose the screen saver type you want, such as Clock, Photos, Pixel Weather, Home Controls, or a compatible app. Grant any requested permissions needed for that type.
  4. Select when it should show: While charging or While upright and charging. If desired, restrict it to wireless charging.
  5. Use Use screen saver to preview the display. Review and reorder active screen savers if you have more than one enabled.

For Photos, allow access to photos and media. For Pixel Weather real-time updates, set location permission to Always allow. If you want the screen saver to behave differently in a dark room, review its low-light option and choose a low-light clock or screen-off behavior as appropriate. Google’s current steps are in its screen saver instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are setting up the phone for a particular place, test the preview and the selected condition before relying on it there. For example, a desk setup that uses the upright-and-charging condition should be tested while the phone is upright and charging; a wireless-only restriction should be tested with wireless charging. The preview lets you check the chosen display without confusing the setup of the screen saver with the separate AOD control.

Manage Always-on Display and At a Glance

To manage AOD, open Settings → Display & touch and use the Always-on display setting. Google’s display settings include a control to turn it off. The precise wording or availability of controls can vary with software updates, so if a label differs, look within Display & touch rather than assuming the screen saver menu controls AOD.

At a Glance is a separate source of eligible lock-screen and AOD updates. To reach its settings, touch and hold the displayed date, then enable or disable individual categories. For sensitive information on the lock screen, review the separate notification and lock-screen privacy controls; changing an At a Glance category is not a substitute for reviewing what notifications may be exposed.

This distinction matters when reducing what appears at a glance. At a Glance categories govern those eligible updates, while lock-screen notification privacy is handled separately. If the goal is to hide one kind of update, adjust its category; if the concern is whether sensitive notification content is visible, review the notification and lock-screen privacy settings as well.

Which should you use?

Use a screen saver for a charging spot

Choose a screen saver if the phone spends time charging on a desk, bedside table, or supported upright charging stand and you want a purpose-built display during that time. A clock suits a time-first setup; Photos makes it a personal frame; Pixel Weather can surface weather; and Home Controls can make supported controls visible. The right choice depends on the display you want and the permission requirements of that type.

For this use, think first about the location and the information you want visible. A clock is the least elaborate option; Photos needs media access; weather’s real-time updates need location permission set to “Always allow”; and Home Controls depends on supported controls. If the room gets dark, decide whether you want a low-light clock or the screen to turn off.

Use AOD for quick lock-screen glances

Choose AOD if the goal is to check the time or eligible lock-screen information while the phone is idle, rather than to create a charging display. At a Glance may add relevant events, weather alerts, tickets, or commute information, subject to eligibility and settings. If that information is too visible, customize its categories and review lock-screen privacy controls.

AOD is the better fit when you want supported lock-screen information to be available without configuring a charging-time photo frame, weather view, or control panel. If you prefer less information, the At a Glance categories and privacy controls let you address different kinds of visibility separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use both only for their separate roles

You can configure both because they are separate features, but the official guidance does not define exactly how Pixel 9 prioritizes or transitions between them in every state. Treat the screen saver as the charging or docking display and AOD as the idle lock-screen display; verify the actual transition timing on your installed software if you need a specific result.

Battery, privacy, and troubleshooting considerations

Battery expectations

The official feature descriptions do not provide comparative battery measurements for Pixel 9 screen saver versus AOD. They therefore cannot support a claim that one feature saves a stated amount of power or consumes a specific amount more. If battery life is your concern, you can turn AOD off in Display & touch, choose screen-off behavior for the screen saver in low light, or use either display only in the contexts you want; assess the effect on your own device rather than applying an unsourced percentage.

That means there is no supported “winner” in a screen saver-versus-AOD battery comparison here. The available feature descriptions explain settings and behavior, not laboratory measurements. Choose based on the display you want, then change or disable a feature if it does not suit your use.

Privacy and visible information

For a screen saver, the content you select matters: Photos draws on Google Photos sources, and Home Controls can put supported controls on the charging display. For AOD, eligible At a Glance items may surface on the lock screen and Always-on Display. Consider which information you want visible where the phone rests, and use the relevant category and lock-screen privacy controls. At a Glance customization does not replace notification privacy settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the screen saver does not appear

  • Confirm that Use screen saver is enabled under Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver.
  • Check that the selected condition matches the situation: charging, upright and charging, or wireless charging if you restricted it that way.
  • For Photos or Weather, confirm the relevant media or location permission. Weather real-time updates require location set to Always allow.
  • Preview the screen saver from its settings page and review which active screen saver types are enabled and their order.
  • If you expected a particular app or Home Control, confirm that it is compatible or supported; the available options do not guarantee support for every app, device, or control.
  • If the room is dark and the display has changed or gone off, check the screen saver’s low-light behavior.

If an At a Glance item is missing

Check whether the relevant category is enabled by touching and holding the date to open At a Glance settings. Availability depends on location, language, settings, and permissions, so an item listed by Google is not guaranteed to appear for every user or circumstance. Also distinguish an At a Glance update from notification content, which has separate lock-screen privacy settings.

What not to assume

  • A screen saver is not a general replacement for AOD: it is configured for a charging or docking context, while AOD is a separate idle lock-screen setting.
  • The Pixel 9 should not be described as having the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL wallpaper-on-AOD option.
  • Google’s available guidance does not specify a universal delay or guaranteed handoff among lock screen, AOD, screen saver, and screen off.
  • No comparative battery figure is established by the official feature pages.
  • A Pixel Stand is not required for a screen saver; it is one supported charging or docking context.
  • Listing a screen saver type or At a Glance category does not mean it is available in every setup: permissions, compatibility, location, language, and settings can matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Pixel 9 screen saver and Always-on Display?

A screen saver is a configurable display for a charging or docking context, with options such as Clock, Photos, Pixel Weather, Home Controls, or compatible-app content. Always-on Display is a separate idle lock-screen setting for the time and supported information, including eligible At a Glance updates.

When does the Pixel 9 screen saver turn on?

In Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver, choose “While charging” or “While upright and charging.” You can also restrict it to wireless charging. A stand is optional; Google also describes using the screen saver while charging without one.

Can the Pixel 9 screen saver show photos or weather?

Yes. The Photos option uses sources from Google Photos and needs access to photos and media. Pixel Weather needs location permission set to “Always allow” for real-time updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Pixel 9 Always-on Display show the lock-screen wallpaper?

Google’s current lock-screen instructions identify wallpaper alongside date and time on AOD as a Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL feature, not a Pixel 9 option.

Can I use screen saver and Always-on Display at the same time?

They are separate settings and can both be configured, but Google does not specify a complete Pixel 9 transition sequence or guarantee that both displays appear simultaneously. Check the behavior on your installed software if a particular handoff matters.

Which uses less battery, screen saver or Always-on Display?

Google’s feature guidance does not provide comparative Pixel 9 battery measurements, so it does not establish that either uses a stated amount more or less power. You can turn AOD off or configure the screen saver to go dark in low light, then judge the effect on your own phone.

The Bottom Line

Use the Pixel 9 screen saver for a chosen display while charging or docked, and use Always-on Display for the time and eligible lock-screen information while idle. Set each up separately, check the permissions and visibility you want, and don’t assume a fixed handoff or a battery advantage that Google’s guidance does not specify.
