To show a screen saver while your Pixel 9 charges, open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, turn on Use screen saver, choose what to display, and set When to show to While charging or, where available, While upright and charging. In the same menu, Low light mode controls whether the screen saver changes to a dim clock or the display turns off in a dark room. Google documents these steps for Android 14 and up; exact options can vary by Android version and screen saver type.
Set up a screen saver while charging
The screen saver menu controls three separate decisions: whether the feature is enabled, what it displays, and what conditions make it appear. Set each one before troubleshooting the charger or buying a dock. These controls work together, but changing one does not automatically change the others: for example, choosing a photo frame does not make the saver appear while charging until you also enable it and select an appropriate trigger.
- Open the settings page. Go to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver.
- Enable the feature. Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the screen saver content. Select an available option, such as a clock, weather, photo frame, charging status, or Home controls. The options shown can depend on installed apps and permissions.
- Choose its trigger. Open When to show. Select While charging if you want it during charging generally, or While upright and charging if it should appear only while charging in an upright position. A Restrict to wireless charging switch may also be available.
- Set the dark-room behavior. Open Low light mode and choose whether the saver should use a low light clock or turn the display off when the surroundings are dim.
- Preview it. Use Use screen saver to preview the selected result. To see it start on its own, leave the display on and let it time out.
Google’s Pixel Phone Help describes these screen saver instructions as applying to Android 14 and up. If the Pixel 9’s menu differs, the installed Android version, locale, or screen saver app may affect the labels or available options. Start by looking at the choices displayed for the saver you selected rather than assuming every documented option must appear on every device.

The trigger determines when the saver is eligible to appear; it does not select the content or brightness behavior. Pixel’s general screen saver guidance and Google Home’s Home Controls guidance use different upright or dock-related labels, so do not assume every label appears for every screen saver.

| Setting | When it is intended to show | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| While charging | During a charging session, without an upright-position condition in the label. | You want the saver when charging in different positions or with different charging setups. |
| While upright and charging | While charging and upright. | You want a stand-like, glanceable setup rather than a saver during every charging session. |
| While docked and charging | For the Home Controls screen saver on Android 15 or higher, Google Home documents this choice for docked charging. | You want Home Controls limited to a docked charging setup. |
| Restrict to wireless charging | If present and enabled, this narrows the charging condition to wireless charging. | You want the saver to appear with wireless charging, not every charging method. |
“Docked” refers to connection to a dock accessory in Google’s general screen saver explanation. The Home Controls dock option is feature-specific: Google documents it for Android 15 or higher, alongside While charging. If you do not see that wording, use the trigger options actually shown for the selected saver rather than expecting an identical dock control elsewhere in Settings.
Think of the choice as a tradeoff between convenience and selectivity. While charging is the broadest documented trigger, so it suits a phone that may charge in different positions. While upright and charging narrows activation to a positioned phone. The Home Controls option While docked and charging is narrower still, but applies to that screen saver and the documented Android version. If your goal is simply to see a clock or photos on a charger, you do not need to use Home Controls or buy a dock.
Pick what the screen saver displays
Google lists several kinds of content for a charging screen saver. The choice affects what information is visible while the phone is idle; it does not change the charging trigger.
- Clock: Shows a clock, with styles available where offered. This is a straightforward choice for checking the time at a glance.
- Weather: Shows weather updates. Google says this option requires location permission set to Always allow; without the required permission, weather information may not appear as expected.
- Personal photo frame: Displays personal photos. It requires access to photos and media, and the screen saver may ask for the relevant permission.
- Charging status: Displays charging information rather than a photo or smart-home panel.
- Home controls: Provides access to smart-home controls. On Android 15 or higher, Google documents this saver as usable while charging or, with the applicable option selected, while docked and charging.
Other apps that support Android screen savers may also appear in the picker. Their choices and permission needs are app-specific; a missing option is not necessarily a phone setting that has been disabled. Google notes that some screen saver types require specific permissions, so check the selected content’s access if its preview or information looks incomplete.

Choose content for the place and purpose of the charging setup. A clock is the simplest glanceable option; weather adds information but needs location permission; a photo frame turns idle time into a personal display but needs photo and media access. Charging status emphasizes the charging information, while Home controls are useful when you want smart-home access from the saver. These are content choices, not alternate ways to activate the saver.
Set what happens when the room gets dark
Low light mode is the screen saver’s response to dim surroundings. Google says its default behavior in a dim environment is to transition to a low light clock. The available choice can also let the display turn off instead. Select the behavior that fits where the phone charges: a dim clock remains glanceable, while turning the screen off avoids keeping visible content on in a dark room.
This setting is distinct from Night Light. Low light mode changes the screen saver behavior when the environment is dark; Night Light adjusts display color for dim use. On Pixel 9 and earlier, Google documents Night Light at Settings > Display & touch > Night Light, with scheduling and intensity controls. Changing Night Light is not a substitute for choosing the screen saver’s low-light behavior. If you want a dimmed clock while charging, adjust Low light mode; if you want display colors adjusted during evening use, configure Night Light separately.
Understand timeout, preview, and the Power button
A screen saver normally appears when the display times out; it is not the same thing as the lock screen or an always-on display. That means the screen needs to remain on long enough to time out. If you press the Power button to turn the display off, the screen saver will not start from that action.

Screen timeout is set separately at Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout. If the saver is enabled but you do not see it appear automatically, check that the chosen trigger matches the current charging setup and allow the display to time out without pressing Power. The Use screen saver preview is useful for checking the selected content without waiting for a charging session to end or begin.
The preview and automatic start answer different questions. A working preview indicates that the selected saver can display its content, but it does not confirm that the current charging method or phone position satisfies When to show. Conversely, if the right trigger is selected but the display is switched off with Power, the saver still will not start through that action. Check the trigger and timeout independently when diagnosing this behavior.
Use Home controls while charging
The Home Controls screen saver is for people who want smart-home controls available from the charging screen. Google’s Home guidance says it can provide access while the device is locked and charging on Android 15 or higher. Its trigger choices include While charging to show the controls without requiring a dock, or While docked and charging to limit them to docked charging.
This behavior is specific to Home Controls and the documented Android version. It should not be read as proof that every screen saver has a dock-only trigger, or that every Pixel 9 software build presents the same options. Choose the Home Controls saver first, then check its own available trigger settings.

Do you need a stand or special charger?
No accessory is required just to change screen saver settings. A stand is useful if you want the phone to remain upright while charging, but it does not replace enabling the saver or setting its trigger. The upright trigger describes when the saver should appear; it does not mean a particular stand is required.
For wireless charging, Google’s charging guidance points to a Qi 1.x wireless charger or a Pixel Stand that works with the phone. Check the exact product listing for Pixel 9 compatibility before buying any charger or stand; a generic claim that a charger is Qi-compatible does not by itself establish that a particular setup suits your phone and intended use. A compatible Qi wireless charging stand is an optional way to keep the phone upright, not a prerequisite for using the screen saver.

Check the conditions in this order rather than changing several settings at once:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the feature and trigger. Make sure Use screen saver is on and the selected When to show option matches how the phone is charging and positioned.
- Let the display time out. Do not press Power to turn the display off if you are trying to make the saver start automatically. Check the separate screen timeout setting.
- Check the selected content’s permissions. Weather needs location access set to Always allow; a photo frame needs access to photos and media. Other saver types may have their own permission requirements.
- Check the Android version and saver type. General Pixel instructions apply to Android 14 and up, while Google’s Home Controls dock guidance specifies Android 15 or higher. Some labels are specific to Home Controls rather than general screen savers.
- Preview the selection. If the preview works but automatic activation does not, focus on the trigger, position, charging condition, and timeout. If the content itself is missing or incomplete, focus on the selected saver and its permissions.
For example, if you selected While upright and charging but usually charge the phone lying flat, the phone’s position may not match the condition you selected; try the broader While charging option if it is available and better suits your use. If you want activation only on a wireless charger, check whether Restrict to wireless charging is available and enabled. These checks help distinguish a content or permission issue from a trigger mismatch.

Google’s help material does not establish that every Pixel 9 software build, locale, or installed screen saver app has an identical interface. Treat the settings actually available on the device as authoritative when a documented label is absent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make my Pixel 9 show a screen saver while charging?
Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, turn on Use screen saver, choose the content, then select While charging under When to show. Leave the display on and let it time out; pressing Power to turn it off will not start the saver.
Can the Pixel 9 screen saver appear only when the phone is docked?
Google Home documents While docked and charging for the Home Controls screen saver on Android 15 or higher. It is a feature-specific option, not a guaranteed trigger for every screen saver. For other savers, use the options available on the selected saver’s settings page.

What does Low light mode do, and is it the same as Night Light?
Low light mode controls the screen saver’s behavior in dim surroundings: it can transition to a low light clock or turn the display off. Google says the default in dim surroundings is a low light clock. Night Light is separate and adjusts display color for dim use; it has its own settings under Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
Why does my screen saver not start when I press the Power button?
The screen saver normally appears when the display times out. Pressing Power to turn the display off prevents it from starting that way. Check Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout, leave the display on, and allow it to time out while the chosen charging trigger is met.
Do I need a Pixel Stand or wireless charger to use a screen saver?
No. The built-in screen saver settings do not require a stand or special charger. If you want wireless charging or an upright charging setup, Google advises using a Qi 1.x wireless charger or Pixel Stand that works with the phone; verify the exact product listing for Pixel 9 compatibility.
The Bottom Line
For a charging screen saver, enable it, choose the content, set a trigger that matches how the Pixel 9 is positioned and charged, and let the screen time out. Use Low light mode to choose between a dim clock and turning the display off; treat Night Light and dock-specific Home Controls settings as separate features.
