Choose the Google Pixel 11 if you want Android, Google’s stated seven-year update commitment, or a dedicated 5x optical telephoto camera. Choose the Apple iPhone 17 if you prefer iOS and Apple services, want the higher-resolution display, or need its documented Dolby Vision video modes. They are not same-year releases: Pixel 11 went on sale in August 2026, while iPhone 17 was announced in September 2025.

Which phone should you choose?

Choose Pixel 11 if you want Android, long zoom, or a defined update commitment

  • You prefer Android and Google services, including Google’s Gemini-oriented features.
  • You often photograph distant subjects: the Pixel has a dedicated 5x optical telephoto camera, unlike the iPhone’s optical-quality 2x crop.
  • You value a stated update policy: Google says Pixel 11 receives seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates.

Choose iPhone 17 if you want iOS, a sharper display, or Dolby Vision video

  • Your other devices and services are already part of Apple’s ecosystem, making iOS the more natural fit.
  • You prioritize display resolution: both screens are 6.3 inches and reach up to 120Hz, but iPhone 17 has more pixels and an anti-reflective coating.
  • Your video workflow benefits from Apple’s listed 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60 fps.

How do the cameras differ for photos and video?

For distant subjects, Pixel 11 has the hardware advantage on paper

Pixel 11 combines a 48MP wide camera and 13MP ultrawide with a separate 10.8MP 5x optical telephoto. The iPhone 17 has two 48MP rear cameras; its optical-quality 2x telephoto framing is cropped from the main camera. That makes the Pixel’s dedicated lens the more explicit choice for reaching farther optically. These specifications do not prove that every Pixel photo will look better: image quality also depends on processing, lighting, and the scene.

For video, compare formats and workflow

Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60 fps. Google lists 4K recording up to 60 fps and 10-bit HDR. Those supported formats are useful distinctions if your editing or playback workflow calls for them, but they do not establish that one phone produces better-looking footage in every situation. Neither specification alone answers how the phones compare for front-camera use or your preferred shooting style.

Which screen is better for reading and viewing?

Both companies cite a peak figure of up to 3000 nits, but Google’s specification says “peak brightness” while Apple specifies “outdoor peak brightness.” Their descriptions and conditions are not established as equivalent controlled measurements, so the matching number is not proof of identical real-world visibility. Performance: iPhone 17 leads in the cited Geekbench results

Tom’s Guide reported Geekbench 6 results of 2,664 single-core and 7,347 multi-core for Pixel 11, compared with 3,701 single-core and 9,460 multi-core for iPhone 17. These are that outlet’s benchmark measurements, not a guarantee of how every app or task will feel. Synthetic scores are only one performance indicator; your operating system preference and day-to-day workload also matter. Source: Tom’s Guide’s August 2026 Pixel 11 review.

Battery: a near tie in one independent test

In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, Pixel 11 lasted 12 hours 45 minutes and iPhone 17 lasted 12 hours 47 minutes. That is a near tie under that test’s conditions, not a prediction for an individual owner. Google’s 4985mAh typical battery capacity and claim of 30+ hours, and Apple’s claim of up to 30 hours of video playback, use different measures; they should not be treated as a direct comparison of everyday battery life. How do software support and price affect the choice?

Support: Google makes the duration explicit

Google says Pixel 11 receives seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates. The cited Apple specifications page does not give an equivalent fixed-duration iPhone 17 support promise. That difference makes Google’s commitment easier to plan around, especially if you expect to keep a phone for several years; it does not by itself establish the value or quality of every future update. Price: compare local offers on the same day

Google’s August 25, 2026 announcement lists Pixel 11 from $899 in the US. Google’s current product page also displays a lower amount after eligible trade-in, which is conditional rather than the standard starting price. The cited sources do not settle the current standard iPhone 17 price in your market. Compare the same storage capacity, country, retailer, and date, and separate standard retail prices from trade-in or carrier promotions before deciding which is better value.
