There is no universal winner. As of October 18, 2026, Google Store’s U.S. unlocked promotion advertises up to $460 back on a Pixel 11 and up to $650 back on a Pixel 11 Pro or Pixel 11 Pro XL. AT&T advertises a Pixel 11 Pro for $0 with any old Google Pixel trade-in, a Pixel 11 Pro XL for $0 with an eligible trade-in, and a Pixel 11 for $10.99 per month without a trade-in. The cheaper path is the one with the lower total cost over the time you will keep the phone, after plan charges, taxes, fees, credits, and switching costs are included.
Quick answer: compare total cost, not the biggest headline
The unlocked route is usually easier to value: pay the Google Store price, subtract the confirmed trade-in credit and any unlocked discount, then add tax and fees. You keep carrier flexibility and do not have to remain on a qualifying wireless plan.
A carrier promotion can cost less when you already need the required plan and can keep it for the entire promotion period. It can cost more when you switch solely for the phone, pay for a more expensive plan, incur activation or termination fees, or lose monthly credits by cancelling or paying off the device early.

What the Google Store unlocked promotion means
The quoted amount is a ceiling, not a guaranteed payout
Google’s promotion states an amount “up to” the published maximum. The representative devices used for the maximum Pixel 11 amount include a Pixel 10 and an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Your old model, storage capacity, working condition, screen condition, and the promotion’s eligibility rules determine the estimate shown at checkout. The maximum should not be treated as the average value of a Pixel trade-in.
The Pro and Pro XL promotion has a separate ceiling from the standard Pixel 11 promotion. Compare the offer for the exact model you intend to buy; a high Pro or Pro XL ceiling does not increase the credit on a standard Pixel 11 purchase.
How Google’s process works
Google’s trade-in flow is available during checkout. You add the new Pixel, choose the old device from the model list, answer questions about its condition, and review the estimate before placing the order. Google then supplies a prepaid shipping label for the old phone.
The estimate is based on your description and can include special-deal money. After inspection, Google emails the trade-in value within five business days and applies it toward the original payment. If the inspected model or condition does not match what you entered, the final value can change.
Deadlines and timing
Google says an estimate is generally valid for 30 days after the new device is received. The trade-in transaction expires 180 days after the new device ships. Standard processing generally takes three to four weeks from shipment, although selected customers may receive an instant credit at checkout. These timelines affect both your cash flow and the risk that a quoted value will expire before the old phone arrives.

What the AT&T offers actually require
Pixel 11 Pro for $0
AT&T’s August 12 announcement says new and existing customers can get a Pixel 11 Pro for $0 when they trade in any old Google Pixel, “any year, any condition.” That wording is a carrier promotion, not a statement that every Pixel has a cash value of zero dollars or that the phone is free without service. The $0 device price normally depends on qualifying installment billing and promotional bill credits. Read the offer screen for the required plan, credit schedule, taxes, and fees before accepting it.
Pixel 11 Pro XL for $0
The same announcement advertises a Pixel 11 Pro XL for $0 with an eligible trade-in. “Eligible” is narrower than the Pro wording, so use AT&T’s device checker or checkout terms to confirm whether your exact model, storage tier, and condition qualify. Do not assume that a phone accepted for the Pro offer receives the Pro XL offer.

Pixel 11 for $10.99 per month
AT&T advertises the standard Pixel 11 at $10.99 per month without requiring a trade-in. The monthly figure is a device-payment figure, not the total cost of owning the phone. Multiply it by the stated installment period, then add the incremental wireless-plan cost, taxes, fees, and any switching expense. The announcement does not establish a universal installment duration, so use the duration shown in your order rather than assuming a number of months.
Use one total-cost calculation for both choices
Choose a comparison period first: 24 months is a useful default, but your actual holding period is better if you replace phones sooner or keep them longer. Apply the same period to both paths.
| Unlocked calculation | Carrier calculation |
|---|---|
| Phone price + tax and fees − confirmed trade-in credit − unlocked discounts | Device payments + taxes and fees + incremental wireless-plan cost + switching or termination costs − carrier credits − trade-in value |
Count a wireless plan only when it is an incremental expense. If you would pay for that same service anyway, do not charge its entire price to the phone. If the carrier requires a more expensive plan than the one you already use, count the difference for every month you must keep it.

Record when each credit arrives
An instant checkout discount reduces the amount charged today. A later refund improves your cash position only after inspection and processing. Monthly carrier bill credits reduce future bills but can disappear if you cancel service, change to an ineligible plan, or pay off the installment balance early. Put the timing beside every credit in your worksheet; equal nominal discounts can have very different cash-flow effects.

Include costs people commonly omit
- Sales tax calculated on the pre-credit price where your jurisdiction requires it.
- Activation, upgrade, shipping, or administrative fees.
- The remaining balance on an old carrier installment plan if switching requires paying it off.
- Early-termination or return charges.
- The cost of a more expensive required plan compared with your current plan.
- Lost promotional credits if you cancel, transfer the line, change plans, or miss a condition in the offer.
Step-by-step: evaluate the Google Store path
- Select the exact Pixel. Choose Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, or Pixel 11 Pro XL, along with storage and color. Promotions can differ by model and configuration.
- Open trade-in during checkout. Select your old phone from Google’s list and answer every condition question accurately. Include whether it powers on, whether the screen is intact, and whether features such as cameras and biometric sensors work when the form asks.
- Save the quote. Take a screenshot showing the device, storage, condition answers, estimated credit, promotion name, and expiration language. The estimate is not final until inspection.
- Check the payment total. Write down the phone price, tax, shipping or other fees, the credit applied immediately, and the amount charged to your original payment method.
- Back up and prepare the old phone. Transfer data, remove accounts, disable device-finding and activation locks, factory-reset the phone, and remove the SIM or memory card if applicable. A locked or incomplete device can fail inspection.
- Ship within the allowed window. Use the prepaid label and keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number. The general validity period is 30 days after receipt of the new phone, while the transaction expires 180 days after shipment.
- Reconcile the inspection result. Compare Google’s email with the quote. If the final amount changes, review the stated model or condition difference and decide whether the revised value still makes the unlocked purchase worthwhile.
Step-by-step: evaluate an AT&T promotion
- Start with your existing service. Note your current monthly plan, remaining device balance, contract or installment obligations, and any account discount you would lose by moving lines.
- Check the exact offer. Confirm whether you are viewing the Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL, or standard Pixel 11 offer; whether the trade-in is required; and whether your old phone meets the stated eligibility rule.
- Identify the qualifying plan. Record the plan name, monthly price, taxes, data or line requirements, and whether the plan is more expensive than your present service. Only the incremental portion belongs in the phone comparison, but the full bill matters for your budget.
- Read the credit schedule. Find the installment length, monthly promotional credit, start date, and conditions that stop credits. Ask what happens if you upgrade, change plans, move the line, or pay the device off early.
- Calculate switching costs. Add activation or upgrade charges, the payoff of any old device, number-porting costs if applicable, and any discount lost on other lines.
- Value the old phone realistically. A carrier’s eligibility label may qualify you for a promotion without giving the phone the same cash value it would receive in an unlocked trade-in. Keep the trade-in value and the promotional subsidy as separate entries.
- Save the checkout terms. Capture the monthly payment, credit, plan, trade-in requirement, return period, and cancellation language before submitting the order.
How to estimate what your old phone is really worth
No independent published statistic establishes an average Pixel 11 trade-in value or a universal savings percentage. The amount depends on the model, storage, condition, promotion, and inspection. A quote for a recent flagship in excellent condition cannot be used to predict the value of an older or damaged phone.
Separate three different values
- Estimated trade-in value: the number shown after you describe the phone.
- Final inspected value: the amount approved after the trade-in center checks the device.
- Promotional subsidy: extra carrier or store money tied to a specific purchase, plan, or billing commitment.
For an apples-to-apples comparison, place each value in its own column. Otherwise, a carrier’s large subsidy can be mistaken for the resale value of the old phone, or Google’s maximum promotional ceiling can be mistaken for a guaranteed offer.
Condition details that can change the result
Use the strictest truthful answer for cracked glass, deep dents, liquid damage, missing parts, battery or power problems, biometric failures, and an inability to erase the phone. Photograph the phone from all sides before shipping. Keep the IMEI or serial number, the shipping receipt, and the inspection email until the credit is settled.
Which option fits common situations?
You already have a cheap plan and want flexibility
Start with the unlocked calculation. If your current service is inexpensive and you would not otherwise move, assigning the full carrier plan price to the phone can erase the apparent $0 device benefit. Unlocked service also lets you change carriers, use a local SIM while traveling when supported, or sell the phone without waiting for bill credits.

You already need the qualifying AT&T plan
Run the carrier calculation with only the incremental plan cost. If you would keep that plan for the entire credit period regardless of the phone, the promotional device credits may make the Pro or Pro XL less expensive than buying unlocked. Confirm that your existing account and line satisfy the offer rather than relying on the headline.
You are switching carriers only for the phone
Include every switching cost and the price difference between plans for the full commitment. A nominally free device can be a poor deal if leaving early forfeits credits or leaves an unpaid installment balance.
You replace phones before the credits finish
Use your real replacement date, not an assumed 24-month period. A carrier offer that is cheaper only after all monthly credits arrive may not win if you normally upgrade sooner. The unlocked route can have a higher initial charge but fewer future obligations.
Your old phone is damaged or unusual
Obtain the actual checkout estimate from both programs. Do not compare a Google “up to” ceiling with a carrier “any eligible device” statement until you know whether your exact phone qualifies and what happens after inspection.
Portability, locking, and resale considerations
An unlocked Pixel separates the handset purchase from your wireless provider. You can change service without asking a carrier to release promotional credits, although network compatibility and any financing balance still matter.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
A carrier-financed phone can remain economically tied to the account until the installment is paid and all credits have posted. Cancellation, a plan change, a line transfer, or an early payoff may alter the credit schedule. Read those rules before assuming you can switch providers later without affecting the phone’s net cost.
When estimating resale value, treat an unlocked phone and a phone with an outstanding balance differently. A buyer may demand proof that the device is paid off and usable on another network. That practical difference is part of the value of flexibility even when it does not appear as a line item on the first bill.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing maximums instead of your device. Use the same old phone, storage, condition, and target model in both quotes.
- Calling the carrier phone free. Add the required plan, taxes, fees, installment period, and the cost of staying through the credit schedule.
- Ignoring inspection risk. A description-based estimate can change after the device is examined.
- Using different time horizons. Compare both purchases over 24 months or over the period you actually expect to keep the phone.
- Overlooking cash flow. Distinguish an immediate discount, a later refund, and monthly bill credits.
- Forgetting existing obligations. Include the old device balance and discounts lost when moving a line.
- Missing promotion end dates. Google’s cited 2026 promotion ends October 29; verify the current terms before ordering.
- Failing to preserve evidence. Screenshot quotes and terms, and retain shipping and inspection records.
A comparison worksheet you can fill in
| Item | Google Store unlocked | Carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Target model and storage | Enter exact configuration | Enter exact configuration |
| Up-front device charge | Price shown at checkout | Down payment or first installment |
| Trade-in estimate | Checkout estimate | Carrier’s stated value or eligibility |
| Final or promotional adjustment | Inspection result and any special-deal amount | Monthly bill-credit amount and duration |
| Tax and one-time fees | Enter checkout total | Enter checkout total |
| Incremental plan cost | Zero if you keep your current service | Monthly difference from your existing plan |
| Switching or payoff cost | Usually none for a purchase that does not require a move | Old balance, activation, termination, or lost discounts |
| Cost over your holding period | Sum all applicable entries | Sum all applicable entries, including credits that have actually vested |
The lower completed total is the financial winner. If the totals are close, unlocked ownership generally buys more portability, while a carrier promotion may be worthwhile when you already want the plan and will remain eligible for every credit.
Bottom line
Buy the Pixel 11 unlocked when carrier flexibility, a low-cost existing plan, or a confirmed Google trade-in makes the net device price competitive. Investigate the AT&T offers when you already need the qualifying service and can keep it for the full promotion period. The correct answer is not the largest advertised discount; it is the lower comparable total after the old phone’s inspected value, plan cost, taxes, fees, credit timing, and switching risk are all counted.
