If your Pixel 10 Pro is losing charge unusually quickly, start at Settings > Battery > Battery usage, not with Smooth Display. Compare the View by apps and View by systems screens, identify whether the loss is foreground or background activity, and then run Battery diagnostics if your phone is a Pixel 6 or later. Google advises discussing a system component such as Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi‑Fi, or Mobile network when it exceeds 10% usage; an app above 10% deserves an app-level investigation. This evidence-led approach distinguishes a display setting from an updating app, weak network, CPU workload, or normal post-update learning.
What to do first when the Pixel 10 Pro battery drops quickly
Do these checks in order so that a setting change does not hide the real cause:
- Open Battery usage: go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Switch between View by apps and View by systems.
- Record the outlier: note the item, its percentage, and whether the activity is primarily foreground or background. A high screen percentage points toward display time or brightness; a high background percentage points toward an app working while you are not using it.
- Run diagnostics: on Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics and choose the path for a battery that is draining too quickly.
- Check timing: note whether the behavior began immediately after a software update, a factory reset, installation of an app, or a change in network conditions.
- Make one change at a time: after addressing the largest outlier, observe the next charge cycle before changing several unrelated settings.
This sequence gives you a measurable before-and-after result. It also prevents the common mistake of turning off Smooth Display and assuming that any later improvement proves the display was the cause.
How to read Battery usage without guessing
App view versus system view
View by apps shows which installed applications consumed battery. Look for an app whose total use is unusually high for the amount of time you actively used it, or whose background use remains high while the phone is idle. Messaging, navigation, media, cloud-sync, social, and utility apps can all be legitimate users when active; the question is whether the amount matches what you did.

View by systems shows components such as Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi‑Fi, and Mobile network. These entries help separate a process problem from ordinary screen-on time. For example, a large Screen share with modest app and network use suggests display demand, while a large Mobile network share during weak or changing coverage suggests the radio is doing more work. A large CPU share can indicate sustained processing even when the screen is off.
The 10% review threshold
Google’s Pixel guidance uses a practical threshold: if Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi‑Fi, or Mobile network is above 10%, discuss that result with Pixel Support. The threshold is a reason to review the result, not a promise that every reading above 10% represents a fault; usage varies with screen time, calls, downloads, location, and signal conditions.
For third-party software, an app above 10% is a reason to investigate that app’s background behavior. Check whether it was recently updated, whether it is syncing continuously, and whether its battery activity is disproportionate to your use. Keep the percentage and the time period shown in Battery usage when you contact the developer, because a single short session and a full-day background pattern are not equivalent.

Run Pixel Battery diagnostics
Pixel 6 and newer phones include Battery diagnostics. In Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics, select the option describing a battery that is draining too quickly. Follow the on-screen checks and note which category the tool identifies.
Diagnostics are most useful after you have allowed enough time for the phone to collect a representative usage period. Running the check immediately after a long game, a large download, or a navigation trip can reflect that temporary workload rather than ordinary battery behavior. If the result points to a system component, retain the result when contacting Pixel Support. If it points to an app, use the app-specific steps below before escalating.
Fix an app that is draining the Pixel 10 Pro
Restrict unnecessary background work
When Battery usage shows an app consuming battery in the background, open that app’s battery controls from its Battery usage entry and restrict background usage where you do not need continuous notifications or synchronization. Restriction can delay alerts, uploads, location updates, or other work, so do not apply it blindly to an app whose timely operation matters.
After restricting an app, use it normally and check Battery usage again. If the outlier disappears but an important notification stops arriving, restore the less restrictive setting and look for a setting inside the app that controls sync frequency or background refresh. The goal is to remove unneeded work, not to disable a function you rely on.

Clear cache or storage when the app remains abnormal
Google lists clearing an app’s cache or storage as a possible reset for third-party app problems. Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing storage is more disruptive: it can sign you out, remove locally stored data, or reset the app, so confirm that important information is synchronized or backed up before using it.
Use these resets for an app that remains an obvious outlier after you have checked its background setting. If the same app quickly returns to unusually high use, contact its developer with the app version, Pixel software version, Battery usage percentage, and whether the activity was foreground or background.
When an app is not the real culprit
An app can appear high because it is the visible front end for a system-heavy task. Video playback, navigation, camera processing, a large download, or hotspot use may raise Screen, CPU, Wi‑Fi, or Mobile network entries as well. Compare the app and system views before assigning blame to the application alone.
Keep Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
Leave Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled unless you have a specific compatibility reason to change them. Google says the Pixel battery continuously learns from your recent app usage and uses that pattern to limit unnecessary background activity.
Optimization is not instantaneous. Google notes that it can take a few weeks to fully take effect on a new device or after a factory reset. During that learning period, a usage pattern that looks worse than expected does not automatically indicate a defective battery. Continue checking Battery usage so you can see whether the same app or system component remains an outlier as the phone learns.
Do not repeatedly reset optimization while waiting for it to learn. Frequent resets or broad, simultaneous restrictions make it harder to tell whether the phone is improving and can interfere with notifications or synchronization.
Account for a recent software update
Google says it is normal for a Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual after a software update. The phone may download components, optimize applications, rebuild indexes, and settle new system code. A few days of extra consumption can therefore be part of the transition.

Use the Battery usage screen during this period rather than assuming Smooth Display changed. If the drain gradually returns toward your normal pattern, no special intervention may be needed. If unusual consumption remains after the phone has had several days to settle, run Battery diagnostics and investigate the listed app or system component.

Display changes beyond turning off Smooth Display
Adaptive brightness and practical brightness
Turn on Adaptive brightness and lower the brightness when conditions allow. Screen use is often a major part of a phone’s consumption, especially during long sessions, but there is no universal percentage saving that applies to every Pixel 10 Pro. Brightness, screen-on time, content, temperature, and network activity all change the result.
If the screen is the largest system entry, compare a normal day with a day in which you use a lower comfortable brightness and allow Adaptive brightness to respond to the room. Measure the result in Battery usage instead of relying on a single impression.
Dark theme on the OLED display
Try Dark theme if you prefer it. The Pixel 10 Pro uses an OLED display, so darker interfaces can reduce the light emitted by many pixels. The effect depends on which apps you use and how much time the display is on; an app with a mostly white interface may respond differently from one that already uses dark surfaces.

What Smooth Display actually changes
The Super Actua display has a Smooth Display range of 1–120 Hz. Turning Smooth Display off changes refresh behavior, but it does not identify an app, CPU task, Wi‑Fi session, or mobile-network process that is consuming power. If Battery usage points to an app or system component, address that evidence directly rather than treating refresh rate as the diagnosis.
Separate network, CPU, and standby drain
Mobile network and Wi‑Fi
When Mobile network or Wi‑Fi is prominent in View by systems, inspect what the phone was doing during that period: calls, streaming, uploads, downloads, hotspot use, or movement between coverage areas. Network-related consumption can rise while the phone is actively transferring data or maintaining connectivity, so compare the timing with your activity.

If the phone loses charge mainly while idle, note whether the network entry remains high during that idle period. That pattern is more useful to support than a general statement that the battery is “bad.” Keep the exact component name and percentage from Battery usage.
CPU and heat
A high CPU entry means the processor is doing sustained work. Correlate it with an app, media processing, navigation, downloads, or an update. Persistent heat while the screen is off is a reason to investigate promptly, especially when CPU remains high across repeated checks.
Restart the phone once when behavior appears temporary or began after a single stalled task. Android’s official battery guidance includes a restart for transient software problems. A restart is a diagnostic step, not a substitute for investigating a recurring outlier.
Repeatable overnight loss
For an overnight check, note the battery percentage and time before you stop using the phone, then record the percentage and Battery usage entries when you return. Repeat under comparable conditions rather than drawing a conclusion from one night. Look for the same app or system component appearing repeatedly, and record whether the phone was warm while idle.
If the loss is repeatable and the evidence does not point to a fixable app setting, use Battery diagnostics and contact Pixel Support. Persistent idle drain is more significant than a one-time drop after a long screen-on session.

The 24+ hour and 100-hour figures are endurance specifications, not a promise that a heavily used phone will reach those numbers. Gaming, camera use, high brightness, streaming, navigation, mobile coverage, and background synchronization can produce very different results.

Use Extreme Battery Saver for emergencies, not diagnosis
Extreme Battery Saver can extend the Pixel 10 Pro’s stated battery life to up to 100 hours, but it does so by limiting normal phone behavior. Use it when preserving remaining charge is more important than receiving every background update or running every app normally.
Because it changes how the phone operates, Extreme Battery Saver is not a fix for an app that is misbehaving or a system component that remains above the review threshold. Turn it off when diagnosing ordinary drain so Battery usage reflects your normal configuration.
Charging equipment: what it can and cannot fix
If charging is slow, verify that your adapter supports 30W USB-C PPS or higher. Google specifies up to 55% in about 30 minutes under that requirement and says the charger is sold separately. A compatible 30W USB-C PPS charger addresses charging speed and compatibility; it does not cure software, network, CPU, or app-related battery drain.

When to contact support
Contact Pixel Support after you have captured Battery usage, compared app and system views, run diagnostics when available, and allowed a recent update a few days to settle. Include the exact component or app, its percentage, whether the use was foreground or background, when the behavior began, and whether the phone was hot while idle.
For a third-party app that remains the outlier, contact that app’s developer as well. Provide the same evidence and explain which background restriction or cache reset you tried. If the issue is a system component such as Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi‑Fi, or Mobile network above 10%, Pixel Support is the appropriate escalation path.
Bottom line
Turning off Smooth Display is only one display adjustment and cannot explain every fast-drain case. Start with Battery usage, compare apps with systems, separate foreground from background work, and use Pixel Battery diagnostics. Keep Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled, allow a few days for post-update settling, tune brightness and Dark theme when the screen is the main user, and escalate a repeatable or system-level drain with the recorded evidence.
