Private Internet Access (PIA) Desktop 3.8.0, released October 15, 2026, changes the Windows networking drivers behind its VPN protocols. The update moves WireGuard to the WireGuard-NT 1.1 kernel driver and adds OpenVPN DCO, which PIA says can deliver more than three times the previous WireGuard speed on higher-bandwidth systems and at least twice the OpenVPN bandwidth on some systems and connections. Those are conditional vendor claims, not a guaranteed result for every PC, server or internet plan.
What PIA 3.8.0 changes on Windows
The Windows x64 and Windows ARM64 installers for version 3.8.0 include two kernel-driver changes listed in PIA’s October 15, 2026 changelog.
WireGuard-NT 1.1 becomes the WireGuard driver
PIA says WireGuard now uses WireGuard-NT 1.1, a kernel driver intended to process VPN traffic more efficiently than the earlier implementation. Its release note says this can boost WireGuard speeds by “more than 3x” on higher-bandwidth systems. The wording describes the best conditions covered by the claim; it is not an average measured improvement or a promise that every connection will triple.
OpenVPN gets an optional DCO driver
The update adds the OpenVPN Data Channel Offload (DCO) kernel driver as a selectable Windows virtual network driver. PIA says DCO can increase OpenVPN connection bandwidth by 2x or more, depending on the computer and connection. OpenVPN itself remains available when compatibility, configuration or network requirements make it preferable to WireGuard.

WireGuard is the new-install default
New PIA installations select WireGuard by default. Existing installations can continue using their current protocol and can change the protocol or virtual network driver in the app’s settings.
What “triple connection speeds” really means
A multiplier such as “more than 3x” compares performance under particular conditions; it does not identify a speed that every subscriber will see. VPN throughput can be limited by several components:

- Local hardware: CPU performance, architecture, available resources and whether the device is Windows x64 or ARM64 affect encryption and packet processing.
- Your access link: An ISP plan, Wi-Fi network or router that is already saturated cannot deliver a threefold increase.
- VPN server conditions: Distance, peering and server load change latency and available bandwidth.
- Protocol and driver: WireGuard and OpenVPN use different implementations; OpenVPN DCO may help some systems while offering little change on others.
- Test conditions: Time of day, test server selection and background traffic can move results significantly.
PIA’s troubleshooting guidance describes WireGuard as generally faster and more efficient than OpenVPN, but the release claims have not been independently established as a representative average across Windows hardware and connections. Treat the figures as potential upside rather than a guaranteed upgrade.

Security and compatibility requirements should come before a headline speed number. If an application, network or policy specifically requires OpenVPN, try DCO first on a supported Windows system. Otherwise, WireGuard is the sensible starting point.

How to install or update PIA 3.8.0 on Windows
PIA requires an active subscription to use its Windows application. The Windows 10/11 installation guide directs users to the PIA Windows download page.
- Open PIA’s official Windows download page and choose the installer matching your computer: Windows x64 or Windows ARM64.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the setup prompts. Allow Windows to install the VPN network drivers when requested.
- Launch PIA and sign in with an account that has an active subscription.
- Open the app’s settings and check the protocol and virtual network driver options. Leave WireGuard selected for the default path, or choose OpenVPN and then test the DCO driver if you need OpenVPN.
- Reconnect after changing a protocol or driver so the new setting is applied.
PIA’s official Downloads page carries the latest desktop build and links to the current and previous five changelogs. The app can also notify you when an update is available. Downloading from the official page is the reliable way to obtain 3.8.0 rather than relying on an old installer.

How to test whether your VPN actually got faster
Use the same network, test service, VPN location and protocol before and after the update. A controlled comparison is more useful than the number shown inside the VPN app.
- Restart or pause large downloads, cloud backups and streaming on the Windows device and other devices using the connection.
- Disconnect PIA completely. Run a speed test such as Speedtest and record download, upload and latency. Run at least three tests and note the time and selected test server.
- Install or update PIA 3.8.0, select WireGuard, connect to the same or a geographically comparable VPN server, and repeat the tests using the same service.
- If you normally use OpenVPN, repeat the comparison with OpenVPN and then with the OpenVPN DCO virtual network driver. Keep every other variable unchanged.
- Compare the median results rather than the single highest reading. Also check whether latency, stability or access to required websites changed.
PIA’s in-app performance widget reports the VPN traffic moving through the app over time; it is not a speed test. Use it for a quick activity indication, not as proof that the update tripled your internet speed.

What to do if speeds do not improve
- Check the baseline: If the disconnected connection is already near your ISP’s limit, a VPN driver cannot exceed that ceiling.
- Try a nearer or less busy server: A distant or congested location can hide any driver improvement.
- Compare protocols: Test WireGuard first, then OpenVPN with DCO, and retain the option that performs best on your connection.
- Confirm the driver setting: Changing a protocol without reconnecting may leave the previous tunnel active.
- Investigate compatibility: If DCO causes connection failures or application conflicts, switch to standard OpenVPN or WireGuard and consult PIA’s Windows troubleshooting guidance.
- Repeat at another time: ISP congestion, Wi-Fi interference and VPN server load can vary from one test to the next.
Bottom line for Windows users
PIA 3.8.0 is a substantive Windows networking update: WireGuard-NT 1.1 is now used for WireGuard, OpenVPN DCO is available as an option, and WireGuard is the default for new installs. PIA’s more-than-threefold and twofold-plus figures describe possible gains under favorable conditions, not independently verified averages. Update through the official Windows download channel, then measure disconnected and connected performance with repeated, like-for-like tests before deciding whether your own connection became faster.
