PHYSINT is not a confirmed Metal Gear Solid sequel. Kojima Productions describes it as an original action-espionage IP. Its September 17, 2026 announcement names Bill Skarsgård as the lead and says Xbox is the publishing partner, but it does not announce a release date, platforms, gameplay footage or specific mechanics.
That makes a design-based comparison more useful than a ranking. Metal Gear Solid is associated with tactical stealth, cinematic storytelling and political themes; Splinter Cell centers on covert-agent infiltration shaped by light and shadow; HITMAN is built around assassination assignments, disguises, environmental opportunities and repeatable sandboxes. PHYSINT’s eventual place among them cannot be judged from gameplay until Kojima Productions shows more.

Is PHYSINT the next Metal Gear Solid?
Not in the literal, officially confirmed sense. Kojima Productions presents PHYSINT as its third original IP and an action-espionage project intended to set a benchmark for that genre. The announcement does not call it Metal Gear Solid, does not establish shared characters or continuity, and does not identify it as a sequel, remake or spin-off.
The “successor” label is therefore best understood as shorthand for Kojima’s return to action-espionage after his work on Metal Gear. It describes an expected creative lineage, not a confirmed story connection. Until the studio publishes more material, treating PHYSINT as a new property avoids turning anticipation into an unsupported feature list.

The same announcement supplies no release date and names no platforms. Xbox’s publishing role should not be read as confirmation that the game will launch on Xbox hardware, PC or any other specific system. It also does not make PHYSINT available for preorder.
How the four games differ in design emphasis
The clearest comparison is the stealth fantasy each property offers. These are franchise-level emphases described by their publishers and platform materials, not results from a controlled side-by-side play test.

Metal Gear Solid: the closest established reference point
Metal Gear Solid combines tactical stealth with a strongly directed cinematic presentation. PlayStation’s series retrospective characterizes the franchise through stealth, film-like storytelling and politically complex themes. Missions are consequently more than exercises in avoiding detection: they are chapters in a continuing espionage drama, with set pieces, characters and plot revelations shaping the experience.

Kojima Productions is returning to the action-espionage space, so players who value authored scenes, geopolitical fiction and a recognizable creative voice have the most obvious reason to watch it. That is an expectation about tone and authorship, not evidence that PHYSINT will copy Metal Gear’s controls or systems.
A current Metal Gear game to play now
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a remake of the 2004 game. Konami says its original story and game design are recreated and updated. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

The remake is the practical choice for someone who wants a confirmed Metal Gear experience while waiting for more PHYSINT information. Check the retailer or platform listing for the physical format, local availability and exact edition contents before buying; those details can vary by region and storefront. Its existence does not provide a PHYSINT release window.
Splinter Cell: infiltration defined by light and shadow
Splinter Cell is the better fit for players whose favorite part of stealth is remaining physically unseen. Ubisoft’s 2021 remake announcement emphasizes dynamic lighting and shadows, and says Ubisoft Toronto is rebuilding the game from the ground up with the Snowdrop engine.

That emphasis creates a different kind of tension from Metal Gear Solid’s broader cinematic identity. In a Splinter Cell-style scenario, the immediate question is often whether an agent’s position, movement or exposure to a light source will reveal them. Concealment and route planning are the defining fantasy, while the operative’s mission provides the setting for that infiltration.
What the remake announcement does not establish
Ubisoft did not provide a release date in the cited announcement. It also does not support claims about launch platforms, final mechanics or how closely the finished remake will reproduce any particular mission. Those details should be checked against a later official update rather than inferred from the 2021 reveal.
HITMAN: assassination as a repeatable sandbox
HITMAN approaches stealth from the opposite direction. Instead of making every mission primarily a passage through guarded spaces, it gives the player an assignment, a location and a target, then encourages experimentation. Disguises, environmental opportunities and multiple routes let the same location support different plans.

Replay is central to that design. A first attempt can reveal schedules, social spaces and useful objects; later attempts can use that knowledge to pursue a cleaner, stranger or more elaborate solution. The attraction is not simply avoiding guards. It is understanding a system well enough to turn the environment into part of the assassination plan.

IO Interactive announced in January 2023 that HITMAN 3 would become HITMAN World of Assassination and include access to HITMAN 1 and HITMAN 2. Because access rules and editions can differ between storefronts, verify the current listing for the platform and package you intend to use. The announcement supports the evolution of the collection; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every current edition has identical content.

Choose PHYSINT if you are following Kojima’s next espionage project
PHYSINT is the only option here that is still an announced project rather than a playable, publicly specified game. Its appeal is forward-looking: an original action-espionage property from Kojima Productions, with Bill Skarsgård attached as lead and Xbox involved as publisher. There is not yet enough official information to decide whether its moment-to-moment play will resemble tactical stealth, light-based infiltration, assassination sandboxes or something new.
Choose Metal Gear Solid if story and series continuity matter most
Metal Gear Solid is the strongest match for players who want a directed espionage narrative, cinematic presentation and political themes integrated with stealth. The series’ historical scale is substantial—more than 60 million copies sold according to Konami’s 2024 corporate report—but that figure is a historical report total, not a claim about current lifetime sales.
Choose Splinter Cell if concealment is the core challenge
Splinter Cell suits players who want covert-agent infiltration where light, shadow and physical exposure define success. The remake is not yet supported by a release date in the cited announcement, so anyone waiting for that version should rely on later Ubisoft communication for timing and platform information.

Choose HITMAN if you want freedom and replay
HITMAN is the clearest choice for players who enjoy open-ended assignments, disguises and revisiting a location to discover better methods. Its sandbox structure rewards curiosity and experimentation more than a single prescribed route through a level.
Which stealth game should you play next?
Use the following decision path rather than looking for one universal winner:
- Do you want a game available now or an announced project to follow? For a confirmed current release, look at the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake or the current HITMAN World of Assassination listing. PHYSINT remains an announced project without a stated release date, and the cited Splinter Cell remake announcement also has no release date.
- Is authored espionage drama your priority? Start with Metal Gear Solid. Its established identity combines tactical stealth, cinematic storytelling and political themes.
- Is darkness and exposure management your priority? Splinter Cell is the closest fit because Ubisoft specifically highlights dynamic lighting and shadows as part of the series’ stealth identity.
- Do you want to solve the same assignment repeatedly? Choose HITMAN, whose disguises, environmental opportunities and locations are designed for varied approaches and replay.
- Are you mainly interested in Kojima’s next move? Follow PHYSINT, but separate confirmed facts from assumptions. The project’s genre framing, lead actor and publisher are known; gameplay, platforms and timing are not.
What is safe to conclude—and what is not
It is reasonable to say that PHYSINT occupies the same broad action-espionage conversation as Metal Gear Solid and may interest people who enjoy Kojima’s work. It is not reasonable to call it Metal Gear Solid 6, describe unannounced mechanics, promise a particular console launch or imply a release date.
It is also useful to compare the established franchises by design emphasis, but not to claim that one is objectively superior. A player seeking cinematic continuity, light-based infiltration and assassination sandboxes is seeking three different experiences. The best match depends on which stealth fantasy matters most.
