Physicists have shown that a deliberately structured light beam can develop a controllable spatial pattern of handedness as it travels through empty space. The experiment does not show ordinary light creating net spin from nothing; it shows that changing a beam’s topology controls how its circular-polarization components separate and where optical chirality appears.
What the experiment demonstrated
The result comes from the peer-reviewed paper “Topological control of chirality and spin with structured light,” published in Light: Science & Applications on 24 April 2026 (volume 15, article 214). Light Mkhumbuza, Pedro Ornelas, Angela Dudley, Isaac Nape and Kayn A. Forbes prepared a structured vector beam whose two circular-polarization components began in a balanced state.
The researchers then changed the beam’s tunable Pancharatnam topological charge. During free-space propagation, the two components separated radially, producing a controllable spatial distribution of spin-related and handedness-related properties. In practical terms, different parts of the beam acquired different local optical chirality even though the beam had been prepared with balanced spin.

This is why the result was described as an “astonishing” property of light. The effect can appear without a material interface, special surface or tightly focused non-paraxial field. It is produced by the beam’s designed spatial and polarization structure as it propagates.

How topology controls the beam
Structured light, not an ordinary flashlight beam
Structured light has a deliberately arranged intensity, phase and polarization pattern. The experiment used higher-order Poincaré modes, a family of vector beams in which polarization and spatial mode are linked. The Pancharatnam topological charge provides a tunable parameter: changing it changes the beam’s spin-orbit interaction in the paraxial regime.
Two propagation effects create the separation
The paper attributes the observed radial separation to two related propagation effects:

- Differential Gouy-phase evolution: the beam’s spatial modes accumulate propagation-dependent phase at different rates.
- Radial divergence: the circular-polarization components spread differently as they travel, moving their intensity and chirality patterns to different radial positions.
Together, these effects create what the authors describe as a free-space optical Hall effect. Regions with opposite handedness become spatially distinguishable along the propagation path. The phrase “light develops a hidden spin” describes the appearance of local spinning or handed regions; it should not be read as a claim that total angular momentum is generated without preparation or conservation constraints.
What “spin” and “chirality” mean here
In optics, spin refers to the angular-momentum component associated with polarization. Right- and left-circular polarization represent opposite spin states. Optical chirality is a handedness-sensitive quantity that indicates how electric and magnetic fields combine locally and is useful when studying interactions with chiral matter.

The experiment began with a beam whose spin contributions were balanced. As propagation changed the components’ spatial locations, one region could be dominated by one handedness and another region by the opposite handedness. The measurable result is therefore a redistribution and separation of spin and chirality in space, not spontaneous creation of a new net spin.
Why this differs from earlier approaches
| Feature | This experiment | Common alternative regimes |
|---|---|---|
| Propagation regime | Paraxial free-space propagation | May rely on non-paraxial tight focusing |
| Material or interface | Not required for the reported separation | Some methods use interfaces, surfaces or optical materials |
| Control parameter | Tunable Pancharatnam topological charge | Often fixed by the optical element or focusing geometry |
| Observed control | Radial separation of circular-polarization components | Spatial spin effects may be fixed or less directly tunable |
The contribution is not a new kind of light source. It is a way to use a beam’s topology as a control knob for spin-orbit interaction while the beam remains in free space.

Potential applications—and what has not been shown
The authors identify three research directions:
- Tunable optical manipulation: spatially varying handedness could help control particles or other objects that respond differently to optical spin.
- Chiral sensing: localized regions of enhanced or selected handedness could be useful for probing chiral molecules and materials.
- High-dimensional photonic information processing: topological states and spatially separated polarization components could provide additional channels for encoding or manipulating information.
These are prospective uses, not demonstrated commercial or clinical products. The reported work does not establish a medical diagnostic, a deployed communications system, a quantified increase in data capacity or a measured performance advantage over a competing technology.
Important limits and reproducibility details
The effect requires a deliberately prepared structured vector beam and controlled polarization and spatial modes. It should not be expected from an unmodified laser pointer, lamp or sunlight. The result is also described within the paraxial approximation; it does not by itself establish the same behavior for every tightly focused or strongly non-paraxial field.

The paper states that supporting data are available from the corresponding authors upon reasonable request. It reports no competing interests. That statement does not mean a public downloadable dataset or an independent replication is already available.
Why the finding matters
Topology has traditionally been treated as a descriptor of a beam’s global structure. This experiment shows that, in a carefully designed vector beam, adjusting a topological charge can determine where spin- and chirality-related features emerge during propagation. That adds a controllable degree of freedom to free-space optics without requiring a new material interface.
Kayn A. Forbes, a coauthor at the University of East Anglia, said the work shows that light can “naturally develop” handed behavior when it is prepared in the right way. Isaac Nape described topology as a new tuning knob for deciding how and where chirality appears. Those statements summarize the practical implication: preparation and topology determine the later spatial evolution.
