A mathematical model from George Washington University suggests it may be possible to warn that a chatbot is about to shift from a desirable answer to a harmful one before the answer is generated. The proposal, published in Patterns on 8 October 2026, tracks how competing signals in a conversation vie for a model’s attention. It is an early-warning concept—not a consumer safety certification—and it has so far been evaluated on seven open-weight models rather than today’s commercial assistants.
What the new study claims
Neil F. Johnson and Frank Yingjie Huo model a chatbot’s internal state as competing directions in the transformer’s attention and residual stream. One direction may favor a helpful, acceptable response while another pushes toward an undesirable response. Their equation estimates when the undesirable direction is strong enough to dominate.
The proposed warning could, in principle, run before a harmful answer appears on screen. That timing is the central difference between this approach and many conventional safety checks, which inspect generated text after it has been produced or rely on alignment behavior learned during training.
The paper is titled “Competition for attention predicts good-to-bad tipping in AI.” It appeared online in Patterns on 8 October 2026, with DOI 10.1016/j.patter.2026.101666.

How attention tipping is supposed to work
Competing output directions
In a transformer, each new token is influenced by the conversation context and by internal representations carried through the network. Johnson and Huo treat desirable and undesirable behaviors as competing directions in that internal space. The formula estimates a tipping point: before the threshold, the desirable direction remains dominant; after it, the undesirable direction can take over.
Live Science described the residual vector as an internal “compass needle.” That is a useful explanation for readers, but it is a metaphor, not a literal component inside the model. The actual proposal concerns vectors and attention-related calculations inside the network.
Why prompt order matters
The same questions can produce different outcomes when their order changes. In the reported tests, rearranging questions about vaccines, harming people and self-harm changed whether answers stayed acceptable or became undesirable. The model therefore treats conversation history as part of the risk condition, rather than assuming that a prompt can be evaluated in isolation.

What was tested
George Washington University reported evidence from seven open-weight AI models ranging from 124 million to 12 billion parameters. The paper’s highlights say the predicted immediate-versus-delayed tipping behavior matched well against those models. The available institutional and publisher reports do not list the individual model names.

The Cell Press release says the work addresses outputs that can be factually correct yet dangerous in context. Johnson gave examples including a nudge toward self-harm or misleading advice to a doctor, soldier or lawyer. His wording was: “We have found the crack that makes an AI’s output flip from what you want to what you don’t, output that can be factually correct yet dangerous, whether that’s a nudge toward self-harm or misleading advice to a doctor, a soldier, or a lawyer.”
What “dangerous” means here
The claim is broader than detecting obviously false information or prohibited words. A response may be factually accurate but still harmful because of its framing, timing or effect on a vulnerable user. Advice that encourages self-harm, or technically correct guidance that misleads a professional making a high-stakes decision, fits the paper’s definition of an undesirable outcome.

This is why a simple fact-check cannot solve the problem. The proposed warning concerns a change in the model’s behavioral direction within a particular conversation.

What a working warning system could do
If later studies validate the method, a developer could use it as an additional control layer rather than as a replacement for moderation or alignment. A possible workflow would be:
- Inspect the conversation state. Calculate the relevant attention or residual-stream quantities as the prompt is assembled.
- Estimate the margin to tipping. Determine whether the undesirable direction is approaching dominance, while preserving the model’s normal response path when the margin is large.
- Apply a precautionary action. A system might pause generation, request clarification, route the case to a stronger safety model or present a safer response.
- Log the context. Record the prompt order and warning state so evaluators can test whether the alert was justified.
- Measure errors on the target model. Tune thresholds separately for each model and use case instead of assuming one number works everywhere.
Those steps describe a potential engineering use, not a capability demonstrated in production. The paper does not establish the operational thresholds, latency, compute cost or intervention policy needed for deployment.

Important limitations
Open-weight evidence only
The reported tests involve seven open-weight models. They do not show that the same equation, threshold or internal representation will work on proprietary assistants whose architectures, weights and safety layers are not available for inspection.
No universal danger threshold
The available reports do not establish a single threshold that separates safe from unsafe behavior across models. A value that predicts a transition in one model may not transfer to another model, parameter scale or prompt format.

Neither the institutional announcement nor the publisher release supplies production false-positive, false-negative or reliability rates. There is also no evidence here that the method has been integrated into a commercial assistant or tested at consumer scale.

Prediction is not prevention
An early warning can only improve safety if a system responds correctly. Blocking too many benign conversations would reduce usefulness; missing a genuine transition would create false confidence. The study identifies a possible signal, but it does not prove that every dangerous output can be stopped.
What developers and users should take from it
- For developers: treat prompt order and accumulated context as safety variables, and test them explicitly during red-teaming.
- For evaluators: check both immediate and delayed transitions, not just whether a single prompt receives a safe answer.
- For users: a chatbot’s confident or factual wording is not proof that the answer is safe for a medical, legal, military or mental-health decision.
- For policymakers: distinguish a peer-reviewed early-warning framework from a certified safety standard or demonstrated control for commercial systems.
The bottom line
Johnson and Huo’s work offers a mathematically testable way to ask whether a chatbot is nearing a harmful behavioral shift. Its strongest evidence is that prompt order and competing internal signals correlated with good-to-bad tipping across seven open-weight models. It remains an early research result: the study does not yet prove reliable prediction on commercial assistants, provide a universal threshold or establish that a warning will prevent a dangerous answer.
