Cloud adoption in physical security is not an all-or-nothing migration. The practical question is where each workload should run: time-sensitive analytics may belong on cameras or other edge devices, video can remain on premises, and cloud services can coordinate management across sites. The right mix depends on connectivity, latency, regulatory duties, security needs, and the organization’s ability to operate the system.
Why physical security is not simply “cloud or on-premises”
A security system includes distinct functions: processing camera feeds, storing video, enabling remote access, and managing devices across one or many locations. Those functions do not have to share a deployment location. A camera can analyze activity locally, recordings can be retained on site, and a cloud interface can help administrators manage devices or configurations across a fleet.
In a CIO BrandPost sponsored by Axis Communications, strategic advisor Patrik Pettersson says, “Cloud is no longer just about storing video data or enabling remote configuration.” The article also quotes him: “I would venture to say that extremely few security applications are 100% cloud.” These are views presented in sponsored content, not a measured comparison of architectures.

| Capability | Possible placement | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Time-sensitive video analytics | On a camera or another edge device; some processing may also run on local systems or cloud services | Whether a response needs to happen promptly, and what happens when a site’s connection is limited or unavailable. |
| Video storage | On premises, in cloud storage, or in a hybrid arrangement | Retention and access requirements, network capacity, and applicable regulatory obligations. |
| Remote access and orchestration | Cloud interfaces can support access and management while video or other data remains on premises | Who needs access, how sites connect, and how identities, permissions, and system changes are managed. |
| Fleet management and updates | Cloud services can coordinate management across multiple sites; local systems may remain part of the deployment | Scale, operational oversight, integration needs, and responsibility for maintenance. |
This is a set of architectural possibilities, not a compatibility guarantee. Specific camera capabilities, storage configurations, and platform integrations depend on the products and system design chosen.
How to choose the right balance
- List the workloads separately. Identify what the system must do for analytics, recording, remote viewing, device management, and updates. Avoid assuming that selecting cloud for one function means moving every function.
- Map site connectivity and response needs. Note bandwidth constraints and whether a task must keep working locally if a site loses connectivity. These considerations can favor edge or on-premises processing for some functions.
- Set storage and access requirements. Decide where video may reside, who must retrieve it, and what retention or regulatory obligations apply. The deployment should be checked against the rules relevant to the organization and its locations.
- Assign security and operating responsibilities. Establish who monitors devices, applies updates, manages access, handles integrations, and responds to faults. A design that fits technically may still be unsuitable if the organization cannot operate it reliably.
- Choose the vendor approach and validate the design. Compare a more unified system with a multi-vendor design against the required features, integration burden, and maintenance capacity. Confirm product-level compatibility before deployment.
Single-vendor or multivendor?
Pettersson’s CIO BrandPost presents a practical trade-off: a single-vendor system may be simpler, while a multivendor system may allow a more tailored feature set but add complexity. Treat that as the source’s characterization, not a universal rule. Actual simplicity and flexibility depend on the products, integrations, and the team responsible for the system.

The article suggests integrators may help design, operate, and maintain hybrid deployments. It does not compare providers, prices, or service outcomes, so an organization would need to assess those factors directly.
What adoption figures do—and do not—show
The sponsored CIO article reports that the Axis Perspectives 2026 Report found 27% of IT leaders currently use cloud for physical security, while 44% expect to use it over the next two years. The report itself was not independently reviewed for this article, so the figures should be understood as reported by the CIO BrandPost and attributed there to Axis Perspectives 2026—not as independently verified measurements.
Potential benefits are not guaranteed outcomes
The BrandPost says hybrid deployments can reduce total cost of ownership, improve visibility and standardization, support scalability, strengthen cybersecurity, and reduce operational strain. It gives no quantified results or independent evidence for those outcomes. Whether any benefit materializes depends on the architecture, products, connectivity, integration work, and operating practices.
