A phpMyAdmin 404 means the HTTP request did not resolve to the phpMyAdmin files, or a reverse proxy and application generated a URL that your front end cannot route. Start with the exact URL that fails, then prove which layer returned the response. On Nginx, inspect root, alias, try_files, and the PHP-FPM handoff. On Apache, check the active virtual host, Alias or document root, <Directory> permissions, and the PHP handler. If the home page works but login, browsing, editing, or saving produces a 404, check PHP_SELF, REQUEST_URI, and phpMyAdmin’s $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] setting.
What a phpMyAdmin 404 actually means
HTTP 404 is a routing or file-resolution result, not a database-permission diagnosis. The web server receives a request such as /phpmyadmin/, translates that URI through its virtual-host and location rules, and either finds a file or forwards the request to PHP. If no candidate file or directory exists, the front end returns 404. An upstream application or proxy can also construct a URL that the front end does not recognize and return the same status.

Those two observations explain why a landing page can load while a post-login action fails: the first request may map correctly, while a generated path, subdirectory prefix, or proxy rewrite does not.
The reliable approach is to identify the failing request, identify the responding layer, and then compare the URL mapping with the directory that really contains phpMyAdmin’s index.php.

Use this diagnostic workflow first
- Record the exact failing URL. Test the base path, normally
/phpmyadmin/, and copy the complete URL that fails after login, table browsing, editing, or saving. Note capitalization, query parameters, and whether the address ends with a slash. - Determine which layer sent the 404. Check the NGINX or Apache access log and error log at the time of the request. A front-end log entry with a missing-file message points to URI mapping. A response generated after proxying points you toward the upstream application or a rewritten path.
- Locate the installation. Find the directory containing phpMyAdmin’s
index.php. A distribution package may keep configuration under/etc/phpmyadminand install a web-server mapping automatically; a manual archive or Docker deployment can use an entirely different directory and mount point. - Compare URL and filesystem paths. The configured URL prefix, directory name, capitalization, and trailing-slash behavior must agree. A mapping for
/phpMyAdmin/is not interchangeable with a request for/phpmyadmin/on a case-sensitive filesystem. - Inspect the server configuration that actually serves the request. Verify the selected virtual host, NGINX
location, or ApacheAlias. Do not edit an inactive site definition and assume it controls the request. - Validate, reload, and retest the same action. Run the server’s configuration test, reload only after it passes, clear a stale browser redirect or proxy cache if necessary, and repeat the exact URL that failed.
Confirm the installation and public path
Find the real phpMyAdmin directory
The decisive file is index.php. The directory that contains it is the target for your NGINX root or alias, or for Apache’s document root or Alias. Do not assume that the URL directory name is the physical directory name. Package-managed installations often separate web files from configuration, while manual and containerized installations commonly place the files under an application-specific directory.
Once you know the physical path, check that the web-server account can traverse each parent directory and read the phpMyAdmin files. A permissions problem often produces 403, but an incorrect mapping or inaccessible location can still appear as a 404 depending on the server rules. Confirm the exact case of every directory component.

Check slash and case behavior
Test both the canonical directory URL and the exact failing action. A request for /phpmyadmin may be redirected to /phpmyadmin/; if a proxy strips or duplicates that slash, subsequent form actions can point somewhere else. Keep one canonical public path and make the server’s redirect and location rules agree with it.
Fixing phpMyAdmin 404s on NGINX
1. Inspect the matching location block
NGINX chooses a location block before it resolves a file. Make sure the block matches the public prefix you are testing and is inside the virtual host that answers the request. A more specific location, an inherited rule, or a different server block can intercept /phpmyadmin/ before the configuration you edited.
For a subdirectory installation, an illustrative mapping looks like this:

The path in this example is not universal; replace it with the directory that actually contains index.php. The important checks are that the location prefix and filesystem target describe the same mount, that an index file is available, and that the fallback does not discard the request.

2. Understand root versus alias
With root, NGINX appends the request URI to the root directory. With alias, NGINX replaces the matching location prefix with the alias path. That difference matters for a subdirectory mount. Alias path slash semantics also matter: a location ending in / should normally use an alias ending in /. A missing or extra slash can produce a path that does not exist even though the target directory is present.
For a site-wide document root where phpMyAdmin is physically beneath that root, a root-based rule may be more appropriate:

Do not combine a root assumption with an alias-style path accidentally. Resolve the request on paper: for /phpmyadmin/index.php, write down the exact filesystem path NGINX should open, then verify that file exists.
3. Make sure try_files is not manufacturing the 404
try_files checks each candidate in order. If every candidate is absent, NGINX returns 404. A rule that checks only $uri can reject a directory request without routing it to an index or front controller. Conversely, a fallback pointing to the wrong prefix can send the request into another location that also cannot resolve it.

4. Verify index handling and PHP-FPM forwarding
The NGINX block must know that index.php is an index file, and PHP requests must be forwarded to the PHP-FPM socket or address used by this host. A common pattern is:

The socket shown is an example; use the PHP-FPM endpoint installed on your system. When an alias is used, verify that SCRIPT_FILENAME resolves to the aliased file rather than rebuilding a path from an unrelated document root. A page that reaches PHP through the wrong filename can fail in ways that look like a routing problem, so check the effective path in the error log.
5. Avoid hiding errors with an over-broad rewrite
Rewrites intended for another application can capture phpMyAdmin requests. Temporarily narrow or disable competing rewrites while testing the dedicated location. Ensure that the public prefix is preserved when NGINX proxies to another service; stripping /phpmyadmin without compensating for it upstream can make generated URLs unusable on the next request.
Fixing phpMyAdmin 404s on Apache
1. Verify the active virtual host and mapping
Apache may serve several virtual hosts. Confirm that the hostname used in the browser selects the virtual host whose document root or Alias contains phpMyAdmin. A correct directive in an unused host has no effect.
An illustrative alias is:
Alias /phpmyadmin /var/www/phpmyadmin
<Directory /var/www/phpmyadmin>
Require all granted
DirectoryIndex index.php
</Directory>
Replace the filesystem path with the actual directory containing index.php. The Alias defines URI-to-filesystem mapping; the matching <Directory> section controls access to that physical path. If the alias points to one directory while the directory block authorizes another, requests can fail or be denied despite the files being present.
2. Check document-root assumptions
If phpMyAdmin resides below the active document root, an alias may not be needed, but the URL must correspond to the real subdirectory. If it resides elsewhere, map it explicitly with Alias. Check trailing-slash behavior and capitalization just as you would on NGINX, and test the canonical /phpmyadmin/ URL after any redirect.
3. Confirm directory access and PHP handling
The <Directory> block must permit the request under the access rules used by that Apache version and host. Apache also needs a functioning PHP handler for .php files, whether that is an Apache PHP module or a proxy to PHP-FPM. If PHP is not enabled for the selected host, the request may be downloaded, denied, or routed unexpectedly rather than executed.

Check that DirectoryIndex includes index.php and that no inherited rule redirects phpMyAdmin requests into a different application. Keep the PHP handler and alias in the same virtual-host context when possible so the request follows one predictable path.
4. Test before reloading
Run Apache’s configuration test, commonly apachectl configtest or the equivalent command supplied by your distribution. Correct syntax and confirm the active virtual host before reloading Apache. Then retest the exact URL, not just the home page.
When the homepage works but an action returns 404
An action-only failure is a strong clue that the initial file mapping works but the public URL generated after login or during a form submission does not. Typical triggers include a reverse proxy mounted under a path prefix, a proxy that removes or adds a slash, or incorrect server variables.
Inspect PHP_SELF and REQUEST_URI
phpMyAdmin’s FAQ specifically advises checking whether the web server correctly fills PHP_SELF or REQUEST_URI. Compare those values for the successful landing request and the failing action. They should describe the externally visible phpMyAdmin path, including the prefix used by the browser. If they contain an internal hostname, omit the proxy prefix, or duplicate it, generated links and form targets can point to a location your front end does not serve.

When phpMyAdmin runs behind a reverse proxy and automatic URL detection is wrong, set $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] in the phpMyAdmin configuration to the complete public URL, including the path and trailing slash required by the deployment. For example:
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'https://db.example.test/phpmyadmin/';
Use the real externally visible scheme, host, and path. Do not set an internal backend address. This setting is intended for deployments where the proxy’s path or scheme cannot be inferred correctly.

Preserve the prefix consistently
The proxy, front-end server, and phpMyAdmin configuration must agree on whether the application is published at the site root or beneath /phpmyadmin/. A homepage that is manually rewritten into place can conceal a mismatch until a login form, table link, edit action, or save request generates an absolute or root-relative URL.

Read logs to identify the responding layer
Start with the timestamp and request path in the access log. Correlate it with the error log and, when applicable, the upstream or PHP-FPM log. A front-end 404 that occurs before an upstream connection usually indicates a missing file, location, alias, or rewrite target. A response recorded after proxying suggests that the upstream generated the status or that the proxy transformed the path.

The first objective is not to make every URL return the homepage; it is to make the intended URL resolve to the intended phpMyAdmin entry point.
Common symptoms and targeted corrections
/phpmyadmin/ is immediately 404
- The request is hitting a different virtual host or server block.
- The URL prefix does not match the configured location or alias.
- The mapping points to a directory without phpMyAdmin’s
index.php. - NGINX
try_fileshas no existing candidate and no valid fallback. - Apache’s alias or document root is not the one used by the active host.
Prove the selected host and resolve the URL to an absolute filesystem path before changing PHP or database settings.
The page loads, but login posts to a 404
- Inspect the form action in the browser and compare it with the public prefix.
- Check
PHP_SELFandREQUEST_URIfor an omitted or duplicated prefix. - Review reverse-proxy path rewriting and set
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri']when automatic detection is incorrect.
Only table links, edits, or saves return 404
- Capture one failing URL exactly, including its path and query string.
- Check whether the URL is generated with an internal host, scheme, or path.
- Verify that the front end’s location, alias, or rewrite accepts that action path rather than only the landing page.
- Use logs to establish whether the 404 came from the front end or an upstream.
A configuration change appears to do nothing
- Confirm you edited the virtual host or server block selected for the request.
- Run the syntax test and inspect the resulting configuration if your platform supports that output.
- Reload the correct service and account for a browser or proxy cache retaining an old redirect.
Retest methodically after the fix
- Run the NGINX or Apache configuration test and correct every reported error.
- Reload the service only after the test succeeds.
- Open the canonical phpMyAdmin URL in a new session or clear stale redirects.
- Log in and test the exact operation that previously failed, such as opening a table, editing a row, or saving a change.
- Recheck access and error logs to confirm the request reached the intended virtual host and PHP handler.
- If a proxy is involved, test from the public URL and compare the externally visible path with the value configured in
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'].
Security checks after restoring access
A working URL is not the end of the repair. phpMyAdmin setup guidance recommends serving the interface over HTTPS, removing the setup directory after configuration, protecting auxiliary directories, and disabling display_errors in production. Consider placing phpMyAdmin behind an authentication proxy and enabling two-factor authentication where your deployment supports it.
Apply these controls after confirming the routing fix so security changes do not obscure the original diagnosis. Keep the public path intentional, restrict access to trusted users or networks where appropriate, and avoid exposing an unconfigured setup interface.
