To run phpBB 3.3 in 2026, you need a web server or hosting account that supports the PHP version required by your exact phpBB package, one of phpBB’s supported databases with its PHP driver, several required PHP features, an enabled getimagesize() function, and temporary write access to specific installation directories. phpBB does not publish a universal CPU, RAM, disk, bandwidth, or concurrent-user minimum, so those resources must be sized for your traffic, attachments, extensions, search activity, and backup policy.
What server requirements does phpBB need?
phpBB is a PHP application backed by a SQL database. The hard requirements are compatibility requirements rather than a single “server size.” Before choosing a hosting plan, verify all of the following:
- A web server or hosting account on a major operating system with PHP support.
- A supported database engine and the matching PHP database driver.
- A PHP release accepted by the exact phpBB 3.3 package you intend to install.

Which PHP version does phpBB 3.3 require?
There is no single timeless PHP range for every phpBB 3.3 download. The published phpBB 3.3.x installation page lists PHP 7.2.0 or newer through PHP 8.3. The development documentation identifies PHP 7.2.0 as the minimum beginning with phpBB 3.3.11. Separately, the current source-repository INSTALL document describes a newer PHP 8.2.0-or-newer line through PHP 8.5. Those statements refer to different documentation and potentially different package states, so do not assume that the highest version shown in one document applies to every archive.

Ask a host which PHP minor versions it can select per site. A plan that offers “PHP 8” without minor-version control may not be sufficient: an extension, board release, or third-party add-on can depend on a specific minor release. After uploading phpBB, read the included installation and upgrade notes before changing PHP versions.
How to check PHP before installing
- Run
php -von a shell account, or create a temporary diagnostic page that reports the web PHP version. The command-line PHP version can differ from the version used by the web server, so verify both when possible. - Run
php -mand check forjson,mbstring, XML support, and the extension for your chosen database. - Check the function directly with
php -r 'var_dump(function_exists("getimagesize"));'. It should reportbool(true). A host can disable this function even when the PHP version itself is acceptable. - Compare those results with the
INSTALLfile shipped in your exact phpBB archive. If the package and the hosting control panel disagree, follow the package requirement or choose another PHP setting.
Which databases does phpBB support?
phpBB supports several database systems, but the server must provide both the database service and the corresponding PHP driver. Version numbers below are the minimums stated in the official requirements; confirm that your host still offers a supported driver and permits you to create a database and user.

Obtain the database name, username, password, server name, port if nonstandard, and character-set details before starting the installer. getimagesize()enabled: phpBB uses it to inspect uploaded image dimensions and types. Merely having an image library installed does not guarantee that this function is enabled.
zlib compression, remote FTP support, and GD are listed as optional. They can add compression, transfer, or image-manipulation features, but their absence does not by itself prevent a core installation. Extensions installed by your board later may introduce additional requirements, so check each extension’s documentation before enabling it on a production forum.
Checking modules in a hosting panel
Look for a PHP-extension selector, often labelled “PHP Extensions,” “Select PHP Version,” or similar. Enable the required modules for the site’s active PHP version, then confirm with php -m or the host’s web-PHP diagnostic. If the panel does not expose XML, mbstring, or the database driver, ask support for confirmation in writing; do not assume that a module available to command-line PHP is available to the web server.
What filesystem permissions does the installer need?
During installation, phpBB must be able to write configuration and runtime data. The official guide identifies these locations:
config.phpstore/cache/files/images/avatars/upload/
Use the installer’s permission instructions rather than applying a blanket, world-writable setting to the entire document root. On a Unix-like server, ownership by the web-server account is usually safer than repeatedly adding broad write bits. On Windows hosting, grant the site’s application-pool identity the equivalent write permission.

After setup, follow the guide’s security instruction: make config.php writable only by the administrator. Remove temporary installation artifacts when the package instructs you to do so, and verify that avatar and attachment directories remain writable only where uploads are expected. A directory that is writable during setup but locked afterward can cause cache, attachment, or avatar errors; a directory left broadly writable increases the impact of a compromised account.
Can you run phpBB on shared hosting?
Yes, shared hosting can run phpBB when it passes every documented check. The word “shared” describes how the server is allocated, not whether PHP or a database is available. A suitable plan should let you select a compatible PHP release, create a supported database, enable the required modules, and write the directories checked by the installer.

Shared hosting becomes a poor fit when you cannot change PHP versions, the provider disables getimagesize(), database connections are restricted, scheduled tasks are unavailable for extensions that need them, or resource throttling causes timeouts during searches, uploads, backups, or upgrades. Ask support these questions before paying:
- Which PHP minor versions can this account run for the web site?
- Can you enable JSON, mbstring, XML, and the database driver for that version?
- Is
getimagesize()enabled? - Which database engines and versions are offered, and can I create a dedicated database user?
- Can the account change ownership or permissions for
config.php,store,cache,files, and the avatar-upload directory? - Are cron or scheduled tasks available if an extension requires them?
- What CPU, memory, process, inode, storage, backup, and traffic limits apply, and how are overages handled?
Do not select a plan solely because it advertises “unlimited” storage or bandwidth. Those labels do not guarantee the PHP version, database driver, file permissions, or CPU time phpBB needs.

How much CPU, RAM, storage, and bandwidth does phpBB need?
phpBB’s official documentation does not publish a universal minimum for CPU cores, RAM, disk space, bandwidth, or simultaneous users. Consequently, there is no evidence-based “minimum VPS size” that fits every board. A small text-only community and a busy forum with image attachments, full-text search, many extensions, and frequent backups generate very different workloads.
Estimate the workload that actually drives capacity
- Traffic: Estimate page views, logged-in users, peak requests, and whether traffic arrives in short bursts.
- Database work: Account for posts, private messages, searches, moderation queues, and extension tables. Search indexing and complex queries can be more demanding than ordinary page views.
- Uploads: Set an attachment and avatar policy, then project monthly file growth and thumbnail generation. Storage must include the database, uploaded files, cache, logs, and at least one backup set.
- Extensions and themes: Add capacity for every enabled extension, scheduled task, API call, and image operation; optional PHP features may become necessary when an extension requires them.
- Backups and recovery: Reserve space and I/O for database dumps, file archives, and temporary upgrade copies. Keep backups separate from the only live disk when possible.
Start with the smallest plan that clears the hard requirements and leaves headroom, then measure CPU load, memory pressure, database latency, disk space, and response times during real peaks. Move to a larger shared plan, managed server, or VPS when measurements—not a generic forum-size claim—show that limits are being reached.

Pre-install checklist and procedure
- Identify the package. Record the phpBB version and read its bundled
INSTALLdocument and upgrade notes. - Confirm web PHP. Verify the active PHP minor version, not just the command-line version, and ensure it falls within that package’s documented range.
- Confirm modules. Check JSON, mbstring, XML, the selected database extension, and
getimagesize(). - Create the database. Create a dedicated database and user, record the host and port, and test that the credentials work from the web server.
- Upload the files. Preserve the archive’s directory structure and keep the document root pointed at the intended phpBB directory.
- Apply temporary permissions. Grant the installer the documented write access to
config.php,store,cache,files, andimages/avatars/upload. - Run the installer. Enter database details, complete the administrator account, and stop if a requirements check fails; fix the environment rather than bypassing it.
- Harden after completion. Make
config.phpadministrator-writable only, review upload permissions, remove installation remnants as directed, and create a tested backup.
Common failures and fixes
“The PHP version is unsupported”
Select a PHP minor version inside the exact package range. If the host cannot offer one, change plans or use a server where PHP can be selected per site. Do not force an unsupported release simply because another phpBB document lists it.
“A required extension is missing”
Enable the module for web PHP, not only command-line PHP. Reload the PHP handler if the host requires it, then rerun the requirements check. If the extension is provider-controlled, open a support ticket or migrate.

“Image function unavailable”
Ask the host to enable getimagesize(). Installing GD alone is not proof that this function is enabled, and disabling it in a security profile will continue to block setup.
“Cannot write config.php, cache, or files”
Check ownership, ACLs, and the active web-server user. Grant write access only to the named paths, complete installation, and then reduce config.php permissions as instructed.
“Database connection fails”
Recheck the database host, port, name, username, password, and selected driver. Confirm that the database accepts connections from the web server and that the PHP extension matches the engine. A local database socket and a remote database hostname are not interchangeable.
“The board works initially but times out later”
Measure CPU, memory, database latency, disk I/O, and account limits during a peak. Review attachment growth, search activity, extensions, scheduled tasks, and backup jobs. Increase resources or tune the workload based on those measurements rather than assuming phpBB has a fixed hardware requirement.

Requirements are release-sensitive. Before each phpBB upgrade, read the new package’s installation and upgrade documentation, verify the PHP upper and lower bounds, confirm database-driver compatibility, and test extensions and themes in a staging copy. When changing PHP versions, take a database and file backup first, check the board’s error log after the change, and keep a rollback path. This discipline matters because the published 3.3.x page, the 3.3.11 documentation, and the repository installation file already show different PHP ranges for different contexts.
