A PHP worker is a PHP-FPM child process that executes one PHP request at a time. For a WordPress page, that process loads WordPress, the active theme and plugins, runs database or remote calls, and returns the response. If every child is occupied, new dynamic requests wait or time out. Increasing the worker limit can raise concurrency, but it cannot make slow PHP, database queries or third-party calls run faster; without sufficient memory, it can make the server less stable.

What a PHP worker is

PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) is the PHP service commonly used behind Nginx or Apache. The PHP manual describes it as a primary PHP FastCGI implementation with features aimed mostly at heavily loaded sites, including process pools, graceful process management, slow logs and status information.

A worker is one child process in an FPM pool. It can execute one request at a time. The pool keeps a configured number of children available, starts more according to its process mode, and reuses or replaces them as settings require. Hosts may call these children “PHP workers,” “PHP processes” or “entry processes”; the underlying idea is the same: a finite number of concurrent PHP executions.

Static files such as CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts normally do not consume a PHP worker. A full-page-cache hit can also be served without starting WordPress. A request that misses the page cache, however, follows the PHP path and occupies a worker until PHP finishes or the request is terminated.

How a WordPress request uses the worker pool

  1. The browser connects to the web server. Nginx or Apache receives the URL and decides whether it can serve a static file or cached response directly.
  2. The web server forwards dynamic PHP work. In a typical Nginx setup, a PHP location passes the request to an upstream PHP-FPM socket. Apache can use an equivalent FastCGI integration.
  3. PHP-FPM assigns a child. An idle child takes the request. If the pool is allowed to grow and has not reached its limit, FPM may create another child. If no child is available, the request waits in a queue or encounters a web-server, FPM or application timeout.
  4. WordPress bootstraps. The child loads WordPress core, the active theme and enabled plugins. Those components commonly issue database queries and may call remote services.
  5. The application produces a response. PHP renders HTML, emits an API response, processes an upload or performs another task. The child remains busy for the entire operation, including time spent waiting on a slow database or external HTTP request.
  6. The response travels back. FPM returns the output to the web server, which sends it to the browser. The worker then becomes available for another request unless a pool policy recycles it.

One page view can therefore create several browser requests, but only the dynamic requests that reach PHP consume workers. The browser may separately request a stylesheet, script, image and font; those assets do not automatically imply additional PHP executions.

What the worker limit controls—and what it cannot do

The pool limit controls concurrency: how many PHP requests may execute simultaneously. It does not improve the execution time of any individual request. A page that takes two seconds because of an inefficient query still takes about two seconds with twice as many workers; more children merely allow more such pages to run at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the pool is saturated, additional requests can queue. A queue that grows longer than the web server or application timeout produces gateway errors, failed checkouts, stalled logins or intermittent 5xx responses. Raising the limit can reduce waiting only when the machine has spare memory and the database and other dependencies can handle the extra parallel work.

Each worker has process overhead in addition to the PHP memory reported by a single script. Multiplying an observed per-process footprint by a proposed maximum is only a starting point; the operating system, web server, database, object cache and background jobs also need headroom. If memory is exhausted, the operating system may kill processes or begin swapping, making every request slower.

PHP-FPM process modes

FPM provides three commonly used process modes. The mode changes when children are created and retired; it does not change the cost of WordPress code.

Mode How children are managed Useful characteristics Main trade-off
static A fixed number of children is created and kept available. Predictable concurrency and no burst-time fork delay. All configured children consume memory even during quiet periods.
dynamic FPM maintains a pool between configured minimum and maximum values, creating or retiring children as demand changes. Balances responsiveness with memory use for variable traffic. Requires sensible minimum, maximum and spare-server settings.
ondemand Children are started only when requests arrive and can be removed after an idle timeout. Good memory efficiency for low or irregular traffic. The first request after an idle period can pay process-start overhead; bursts may create children quickly.

Configuration names vary by package and hosting control panel, but the concepts are the same. A provider may expose only a worker count while managing the remaining FPM settings for you.

Why WordPress requests hold workers

Core, theme and plugin execution

WordPress loads PHP files from core, the selected theme and every active plugin needed for the request. A plugin that adds a small feature can still register hooks, build queries or perform calculations on every page. Administrative screens and authenticated sessions often bypass public-page caches and therefore reach PHP more frequently.

Database latency

Most WordPress components make database requests. Large metadata tables, unindexed queries, expensive reporting screens and lock contention can leave a worker waiting even though PHP itself is doing little CPU work. Adding workers in this situation can send more simultaneous queries to the same database and increase contention.

Remote HTTP calls

Update checks, payment or marketing integrations, webhooks and API lookups can block a worker while waiting for another service. A slow or unavailable remote endpoint can consume the whole pool even when local PHP code is efficient. Timeouts and asynchronous designs are safer than making every page request wait indefinitely.

Uncached pages and personalized traffic

Public pages served from a reverse proxy or full-page cache can avoid PHP entirely on a hit. Logged-in users, carts, search results, previews and other personalized responses usually bypass that cache. The resulting PHP demand depends on the proportion of cache misses, not just the site’s total visitor count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uploads, image work and scheduled tasks

Image resizing, media metadata generation and other upload operations can be CPU- and memory-intensive. Scheduled wp-cron.php jobs, imports, backups and maintenance tasks can run at the same time as visitors and occupy the same pool. A site can report busy workers during a quiet traffic period if a background task is expensive.

How many PHP workers does WordPress need?

There is no authoritative “workers per visitor” number. The appropriate ceiling depends on request duration, cache-hit rate, database latency, plugin and theme behavior, background jobs, available memory and the hosting architecture. Two sites with the same daily traffic can need very different concurrency because one serves mostly cached pages while the other renders personalized pages and runs slow integrations.

Use measurements rather than a formula based on visitors. Observe the highest simultaneous active requests during representative peaks, then check whether the server still has memory and CPU headroom and whether the database remains responsive. Increase capacity in small steps and watch error rates, queueing, swap activity and database latency after each change.

A useful planning distinction is capacity versus request cost. More children increase capacity for short, independent requests. Lowering query time, eliminating unnecessary remote calls or improving cache hits lowers the amount of time each child is occupied, which often solves saturation more safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “all PHP workers are busy” means

The message means that every child allowed by the pool is currently handling a request. It does not identify the cause. The pool may be genuinely undersized, or a few slow requests may be monopolizing all children. A database stall, remote API delay, image operation, cron job or exhausted memory can produce the same symptom.

Distinguish a brief burst from sustained saturation. A short queue during a traffic spike may clear as soon as requests finish. A pool that stays full, shows rising request durations or repeatedly reaches timeouts needs investigation before simply raising the maximum.

Diagnose saturation before changing the limit

  1. Inspect FPM status. Use the status endpoint or hosting dashboard to check active processes, idle processes, the configured maximum and whether the pool has reached it. Protect the endpoint; it should not be publicly exposed.
  2. Compare web-server timing. Look at upstream-connect, upstream-response and total request times. Long waits for an upstream response point to PHP or its dependencies rather than static-file delivery.
  3. Read the FPM slow log. Enable or inspect slow-request logging and identify the URLs or scripts that exceed the normal duration. Slow logs show where workers are being held, not merely that they are busy.
  4. Correlate application work. For the slow requests, examine database queries, external HTTP calls, plugin and theme hooks, image processing and scheduled jobs. Fix the expensive operation instead of masking it with a larger pool.
  5. Check cache behavior. Verify the reverse-proxy or full-page cache hit rate and confirm that cache bypass rules are intentional. Remember that a cache hit for HTML does not cache the browser’s separate CSS, JavaScript, image and font requests.
  6. Confirm OPcache. OPcache stores precompiled PHP bytecode in memory, avoiding repeated parsing of unchanged scripts. Check that it is enabled and has enough space for the installed WordPress, theme and plugin code.
  7. Review system headroom. Check memory limits, swap activity, CPU pressure, database connections and disk or network latency. A worker increase is unsafe if the current pool already pushes the machine into swapping or overloads the database.
  8. Reproduce background activity. Compare busy periods with wp-cron.php, imports, backups, image generation and administrative jobs. Move or isolate heavy work where the platform permits.

Optimizations that reduce worker demand

Serve cacheable pages before PHP

A reverse proxy or full-page cache can return stored HTML for eligible anonymous requests without contacting PHP or the database. Set exclusions deliberately for accounts, carts, checkout, previews and other personalized responses. Measure hit behavior after changes; a cache that is present but constantly bypassed does not reduce worker load.

Keep OPcache healthy

OPcache reduces CPU work by retaining compiled bytecode. It does not add workers or increase the pool maximum, but faster script startup shortens the time each child is occupied. Insufficient OPcache space causes scripts to be evicted and compiled repeatedly, while stale-cache handling must be compatible with the deployment process.

Remove or repair expensive application work

Profile slow database queries, eliminate redundant queries, add appropriate indexes through the application’s supported mechanisms and update or replace code that performs needless work. Give remote calls finite timeouts and cache responses where correctness allows. Optimize image dimensions and processing paths rather than allowing uploads to block ordinary page requests.

Separate scheduled work

Run heavy imports, reports and maintenance jobs outside peak visitor periods or in a separate queue and process pool when the host supports it. Reducing competition between cron tasks and web requests can restore responsiveness without increasing public-request concurrency.

FPM settings that matter

pm.max_requests limits how many requests a child handles before FPM respawns it. Recycling can contain gradual memory growth from leaky extensions or application code, but a very low value creates unnecessary process churn.

For ondemand pools, pm.process_idle_timeout controls how long an idle child remains before removal. A shorter timeout saves memory on quiet sites; a longer timeout avoids repeated process creation for recurring traffic.

request_terminate_timeout places a hard upper bound on a request. Slow-log timeout settings help record problematic executions before termination. These controls are reliability and diagnostic safeguards, not substitutes for fixing slow code. Set them with awareness of legitimate long-running operations such as imports, and coordinate them with web-server and application timeouts.

The maximum-child setting is the actual concurrency ceiling. Raise it only after estimating memory per child and confirming that the database and other services can sustain the additional parallel requests. If a managed host controls this value, provide status and slow-log evidence when requesting a change.

Security, versions and isolation

Run WordPress and the web server as a non-privileged user where possible. PHP needs controlled write access for automatic core updates and to wp-content/uploads for uploaded media; broad write permissions increase the impact of a compromised plugin or account.

Protect the FPM socket or network listener. The PHP manual warns that PHP-FPM must not be reachable from an untrusted network: a client able to open a FastCGI connection can influence request configuration and potentially execute arbitrary code. Use local sockets or a restricted private network, firewall the listener and avoid publishing status or control endpoints.

The current WordPress requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended as a robust web-server choice. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee adequate performance, but unsupported versions can introduce security, compatibility and diagnostic problems before worker tuning even begins.

Choosing between more workers and a larger hosting plan

More workers are appropriate when requests are reasonably fast, the pool repeatedly reaches its ceiling, memory remains comfortable and database latency does not rise when concurrency increases. They are not the first remedy for slow code, a low cache-hit rate or a blocked external service.

Situation Most useful next action Why
Fast requests, idle memory, pool consistently at its maximum Increase the maximum gradually and observe the database. Additional children can absorb legitimate concurrent demand.
Workers busy with long database queries Profile and optimize queries; inspect indexes and database capacity. More concurrency can amplify database contention.
Workers waiting on remote services Add finite timeouts, caching or asynchronous processing. One unreliable dependency should not occupy the entire pool.
Anonymous traffic has many cache misses Correct cache rules and improve page-cache delivery. Serving HTML without PHP removes work instead of adding processes.
Memory pressure or swapping Reduce concurrency, optimize requests or move to a larger, better-isolated plan. More workers would worsen resource exhaustion.
Heavy cron, import or image jobs overlap visitors Schedule or isolate background work. Separating workloads protects the public request pool.

When evaluating managed WordPress hosting or a managed VPS, ask for the PHP-FPM process mode, maximum children and memory headroom; FPM status and slow-log access; OPcache and page-cache behavior; database latency and connection limits; cron or background-job isolation; supported PHP versions; HTTPS and account isolation; and whether tuning is managed or left to you. A headline worker number without these details is not a meaningful capacity comparison.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Verify that the site runs supported PHP and database versions over HTTPS.
  2. Measure active, idle and maximum FPM children during normal and peak periods.
  3. Use slow logs and request timing to identify the scripts that hold children longest.
  4. Fix query, plugin, theme, remote-call, image and cron costs found in that evidence.
  5. Confirm OPcache and page-cache hit behavior.
  6. Recheck memory, CPU, database latency and timeout rates.
  7. If requests are still fast but the pool saturates, raise the child limit in small increments or choose a plan with more memory and better isolation.

The key measure is not the largest worker number a dashboard permits. It is whether the site can complete its real dynamic workload within its memory, database and timeout budgets while keeping unused capacity for bursts.
