If a username keeps displaying after logout in a PHP comment form, the likely issue is that the submitted comment name is being taken from a hidden form field or that old comments are being displayed using the current session. Decide the author on the server when saving each comment, and display the identity saved with that comment.

Why the username can remain after logout

A SitePoint Forums thread describes a form intended to label logged-in users by username and logged-out users as “Anonymous.” Its hidden name input was populated from $_SESSION['username'], and the comment handler saved the submitted name from the request. The poster reported that new comments continued to show the previous username after logout. Forum replies pointed out the core flaw: a hidden input is still submitted by the browser, so it is not a trustworthy source of identity. Read the discussion.

There are two separate identity questions to solve: who is submitting this request, and who authored a comment already stored in the database. The current session can help answer the first; it should not replace the saved authorship of older comments.

Choose the author on the server when saving a comment

For a new comment, determine whether the request is authenticated in the server-side form-processing code. If it is, use the authenticated account associated with the session. If it is anonymous, apply the site’s chosen anonymous-author rule, such as displaying “Anonymous.” Do not accept a username from a hidden field as proof of identity.

  1. Start the session in the request handler using the session setup appropriate to your application.
  2. Validate the comment request, including the comment content and any authorization or anti-forgery checks your application requires.
  3. Derive the author on the server from authenticated session state. For an anonymous request, set the anonymous identity in server-side code.
  4. Save the comment and its authorship together using a parameterized database query. Do not build SQL by directly interpolating submitted comment data.

A related SitePoint discussion likewise recommends using the account identifier stored in the session and querying user data as needed, rather than trusting a form-supplied author name. See that discussion. These are forum participants’ recommendations, not official PHP documentation or a tested implementation.

Store authorship separately from the current viewer

When rendering a historical comment, use the author information associated with that comment—not whichever user happens to be logged in now. Otherwise, a comment can appear under another viewer’s name, or have no name when no user is logged in. The original thread’s later example produced this kind of mismatch: stored comments appeared to belong to the currently logged-in user and could show blank names after logout. The thread’s follow-up posts describe the problem.

For registered authors, a stable account ID linked to the comment is generally more reliable than copying a username into every comment. Resolve the display name from that account when presenting the comment, while defining what to show if the account is renamed or no longer available. For anonymous comments, save the anonymous display identity or other author data your site’s policy requires with the comment. This keeps the comment’s authorship distinct from the current session.

Check the logout and display paths independently

  • New comment still uses the old username: inspect the comment handler and remove reliance on a posted author field. Confirm that the handler derives the author from the authenticated server-side state or sets the anonymous fallback.
  • Old comments change names when another person logs in: inspect the rendering query and template. They may be substituting the current session’s username instead of using the comment’s saved author association.
  • Names disappear for logged-out visitors: check whether the template only prints a name when a session username exists. Historical comment display should not depend on the viewer being logged in.
  • The session still seems present after logout: verify that logout clears the authentication state your application checks, and consult the current PHP documentation for the session lifecycle details that apply to your PHP version and configuration. The forum thread’s suggestion to unset $_SESSION['username'] is not, by itself, a complete authorship or data-model fix.

Keep submitted data and database queries safe

Comment text and other request values are client-controlled input. Validate them for the application, use prepared statements for dynamic SQL, and escape output appropriately when displaying comments. Do not copy the legacy SQL or password-handling patterns shown in forum snippets as a production solution.
