For the quickest painterly conversion, open the image and choose Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint. Shape the brush character with Stylization, Cleanliness, Scale and Bristle Detail, then use Angle and Shine to control how light plays across the simulated paint. For more personal, stroke-by-stroke blending, use the Mixer Brush or Smudge tool instead.
Start with Oil Paint for a fast, controllable result
Photoshop’s Oil Paint filter is designed to transform a photograph into an image with the visual appearance of a classic oil painting. It is the most direct built-in route when you want an automatic conversion rather than painting every stroke yourself.
- Open the photograph in Photoshop.
- Create a duplicate of the image layer so the untouched original remains available. Work on the duplicate and hide or reduce its opacity when you need to compare the effect.
- Choose Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint.
- Adjust the brush controls first, inspect the preview at 100% and at the final output size, then refine the lighting controls.
- Click OK when the preview has the stroke scale and surface treatment you want.
There is no single universally correct Oil Paint recipe. A close-up portrait, a low-contrast landscape and a busy street photograph need different stroke sizes and levels of cleanup. Treat the sliders as a way to decide how much detail becomes a stroke, not as a preset that guarantees a particular style.

The six controls fall into two groups. Stylization, Cleanliness, Scale and Bristle Detail determine the character and apparent material of the strokes. Angle and Shine determine the light reflected by the painted surface. Adobe’s October 2026 settings reference uses a 0–10 scale for the first four controls and a 0–360° scale for Angle.

| Control | Range | Visual effect | When to move it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stylization | 0–10 | Moves from daubed, irregular marks at 0 toward smoother, more unified strokes at 10. | Raise it when the image still looks like a filtered photograph; lower it when you want distinct, broken brush marks. |
| Cleanliness | 0–10 | Changes stroke length and continuity. Low values look short and choppy; high values look long and fluid. | Use a lower value for visible, energetic marks or a higher value for broad blended passages. |
| Scale | 0–10 | Changes the apparent thickness and relief of the paint, from thin at 0 to thick at 10. | Increase it for a heavier impasto impression; reduce it when small facial features or fine architecture must remain readable. |
| Bristle Detail | 0–10 | Controls the visibility of brush-hair grooves, from soft at 0 to strong at 10. | Raise it when you want bristle texture to catch the light; lower it if the grooves distract from the subject. |
| Angle | 0–360° | Changes the direction from which light strikes the simulated painted surface. | Rotate it to make ridges read with the direction of your composition’s light. It is not a brush-stroke direction control. |
| Shine | Adobe’s reference presents a slider; no numeric range is specified in the cited material. | Changes highlight brightness and the amount of reflected light from the paint surface. | Use a lower value for a matte, subdued finish or a higher value for stronger wet-paint highlights. |
Angle is often misunderstood. Rotating it does not rotate the generated strokes; it rotates the apparent incidence of light over the relief created by Scale and Bristle Detail. If the brush texture is correct but the highlights feel backwards, change Angle before rebuilding the whole effect. Shine then determines how strongly those highlights show.
A practical Oil Paint adjustment sequence
1. Establish the stroke size with Scale
Begin with Scale because it changes how much of the photograph is grouped into a paint-like mass. At a low setting, fine details remain prominent and the result can feel more like a textured filter. At a high setting, separate forms merge into broad painted areas. Watch eyes, lettering, foliage and other high-detail regions while moving the slider; these are the first places where an overly large apparent brush becomes obvious.
2. Decide whether marks should be smooth or broken
Use Stylization and Cleanliness together. Stylization governs the overall smoothness of the stroke appearance, while Cleanliness governs whether those strokes are short and discontinuous or long and flowing. If a subject has recognizable edges but still looks photographic, increase Stylization modestly. If the result has the right amount of abstraction but feels mechanically smeared, reduce Cleanliness to reintroduce shorter marks.

3. Add or restrain bristle texture
Bristle Detail is a surface decision, not a detail-recovery slider. Increasing it makes brush-hair grooves more visible, which can help broad, simple areas read as physical paint. On portraits or images with fine patterns, strong grooves may compete with the subject. Compare the preview at the size at which the image will actually be viewed, because bristle ridges that look attractive when zoomed in can become visual noise when reduced.
4. Finish with light
Once the marks look right, adjust Angle and Shine. Angle should support the direction in which you want the painted relief to catch light; Shine controls the brightness and strength of the reflection. If you increase Shine before the stroke structure is settled, bright ridges can make an unsuitable texture seem convincing in the preview.
When the Mixer Brush is a better choice
The Mixer Brush is for deliberate, stroke-by-stroke painting rather than one-click conversion. Adobe describes two paint wells: a reservoir holds paint that the brush can deposit, while a pickup well samples and mixes color from the canvas. That arrangement lets you decide where colors blend and where a stroke should remain loaded with a chosen color.

- Wet: controls how much paint the brush picks up from the canvas. Higher values produce longer paint streaks.
- Load: controls how much paint is held in the reservoir. Lower values make strokes become dry more quickly.
- Mix: sets the ratio of canvas paint to reservoir paint. At 100%, the stroke draws all its paint from the canvas; at 0%, it draws all its paint from the reservoir.
- Sample All Layers: samples from all visible layers instead of only the currently selected layer.
A controlled Mixer Brush workflow
- Choose the Mixer Brush and select a soft or textured brush tip appropriate to the subject.
- Decide whether the stroke should pick up mostly existing color or carry a deliberate color from the reservoir. Set Wet and Mix accordingly.
- For a longer, more fluid mark, increase Wet. For a dry, broken mark, reduce Load so the reservoir empties sooner.
- Hold Alt on Windows or Option on macOS and click the canvas to load a color from the image.
- Drag in the direction of the form, such as along hair, fabric folds or landscape contours. Release and reload color when the stroke starts carrying an unwanted hue.
- Enable Sample All Layers when you are painting on a separate layer but need the brush to see the composite image beneath it.
Adobe also documents presets that combine Wet, Load and Mix. Use those as starting combinations, then tune them to the image. The Mixer Brush gives you control over individual marks, but it requires more time and a clear plan for which areas should stay sharp, blend softly or receive a new color.
Use Smudge for targeted artistic blending
The Smudge tool pushes sampled pixels along the path of your drag. It is useful when you want to pull colors together in selected areas rather than convert the entire image. A short drag can soften a hard transition; a longer drag can create a visible sweep that resembles a brush movement.
Strength determines how forcefully pixels are pushed. Adobe also documents Finger Painting, which introduces a deliberate foreground color into the smudge instead of relying only on sampled pixels. Use a low Strength when preserving recognizable edges matters and increase it only where a stronger blend is intentional. Keep the original layer or a hidden backup while experimenting: Smudge changes pixels directly and is not a substitute for preserving an untouched original.

Compare other built-in painterly looks
If Oil Paint does not match the subject, Photoshop’s Filter Gallery provides distinct visual treatments. These are not interchangeable versions of the Oil Paint controls; each emphasizes a different kind of mark, edge or surface.
| Filter Gallery option | Stroke or texture character | Useful when you want |
|---|---|---|
| Fresco | Short, rounded daubs in a coarse style. | A visibly rough, compact mark pattern. |
| Paint Daubs | Adjustable brush size and brush type. | To choose a brush-like daub while retaining more direct control over its appearance. |
| Palette Knife | Reduces detail to suggest thinly painted canvas while showing underlying texture. | A scraped, simplified surface rather than bristle-heavy relief. |
| Watercolor | Simplifies detail in a watercolor style and saturates color near significant tonal edges. | Soft washes with concentrated color along important value boundaries. |
| Angled Strokes | Repaints with diagonal strokes, using opposing directions in lighter and darker areas. | A directional, graphic stroke pattern that follows tonal separation. |
| Crosshatch | Retains much of the original detail while adding simulated pencil hatching and roughened color edges. | A drawn, cross-lined treatment instead of opaque painted masses. |
| Rough Pastels | Uses texture controls to add a material surface. | A dry, granular finish with visible surface character. |
| Underpainting | Combines a painted base with texture controls. | A layered, material-rich effect in which the surface is part of the look. |
Choose among these filters by asking four questions: What kind of mark should be visible? How much original detail must survive? Should edges stay crisp, become rough or gather color? Does the image need a material surface such as canvas, paper or grain? That decision is more reliable than treating every filter as a different intensity of the same effect.

Add a material surface with texture controls
Adobe documents texture and surface controls for Rough Pastels, Underpainting, Glass, Conté Crayon and Texturizer. Depending on the filter, you can adjust texture scale, relief depth, light direction and whether the texture is inverted. Scale determines how large the surface pattern appears; relief depth determines how strongly it rises or falls; light direction determines which ridges catch the highlight; inversion swaps the raised and recessed relationship.

Custom textures must be saved in Photoshop format. A surface texture should support the painterly treatment rather than obscure it: a coarse pattern can reinforce a broad pastel or canvas impression, while a fine pattern may disappear at output size or make an already detailed image look dirty.
Why Oil Paint may be grayed out
When Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint is unavailable, start with the version and document setup instead of changing random sliders. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance identifies RGB document mode and graphics-processor settings among the checks for Photoshop versions earlier than 23.2.
Check the document mode
Confirm that the document is in RGB mode. A non-RGB document can disable filters that expect RGB image data. If you need to change mode, save a copy first and inspect the result afterward, because mode conversion can affect color and editing options.
Check the Photoshop version
The older troubleshooting instructions are specifically aimed at versions earlier than 23.2. Adobe’s Oil Paint documentation says Photoshop 23.2 rewrote the filter to use native GPU resources more effectively on both macOS and Windows, with particular benefits for larger files, and says there were no other filter updates in that release. Therefore, do not apply every legacy requirement to a current installation without checking which version the instruction describes.
Check graphics-processor settings on older installations
For an installation earlier than 23.2, review Photoshop’s graphics-processor configuration and the GPU support checks in Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance. The documentation provides diagnostic checks; it does not establish that every reader needs to purchase a new graphics card. If the filter works in a smaller RGB test document but not in a large file, the difference may be related to the older implementation’s handling of larger images.
Retest after each change
- Verify the document is RGB.
- Confirm the Photoshop version.
- On an older version, review the graphics-processor setting and support status.
- Close and reopen the document, then check the Oil Paint menu again.
- If it remains disabled, test a new RGB document to determine whether the problem is document-specific or installation-wide.
Choose the right workflow for the image
| Your priority | Best starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fast conversion of the whole photograph | Oil Paint | Automatic strokes are quick, but you have less control over where individual marks land. |
| Hand-directed color mixing | Mixer Brush | Reservoir, Wet, Load and Mix provide control, but every important area takes manual work. |
| Localized blending or pulled color | Smudge | Useful for targeted edits, but direct pixel pushing can damage the only copy of the image. |
| A specific material or mark pattern | Filter Gallery | Options such as Watercolor, Palette Knife and Crosshatch have distinct behavior rather than a shared control set. |
| Visible paper, canvas or relief | Rough Pastels, Underpainting or another texture-capable filter | Surface controls add material character but can compete with the subject if overused. |
Many finished images use a hybrid approach: apply Oil Paint to establish the overall direction, then use a Mixer Brush or Smudge on a duplicate layer to correct a face, clarify a focal edge or soften a distracting transition. Keep those manual passes selective so the image retains a consistent visual language.
Quick Recap
Quality checks before exporting
- Inspect the focal subject at 100% to ensure eyes, lettering and important edges have not merged into unreadable paint.
- View the image at its final display or print size; bristle grooves and relief can change character when reduced.
- Look for repeated, equally strong strokes that make the effect appear mechanical. Vary the treatment with localized Mixer Brush or Smudge work if needed.
- Check highlights after changing Angle or Shine. A bright ridge can pull attention away from the intended focal point.
- Keep the original image layer hidden but available until the final export, especially after Smudge or other direct pixel edits.
