Use Generative Fill to add, remove, or change content inside a selected part of an image; use Generative Expand when you need to create image area beyond its current edges. For web designers, that difference often comes down to whether a source image needs a local edit or more room for a banner, hero, or responsive crop. Neither feature replaces art direction: inspect the result in the layout where it will appear.
What each Photoshop feature does

Adobe announced both Photoshop features as generally available in October 2024. Adobe’s announcement describes their distinct image-editing roles. The practical examples below apply those capabilities to web layouts; they are not a guarantee that a generated result will fit a design cleanly.
When to use Generative Fill
Choose Fill when the problem is contained within the existing image: a selected region needs new content, something needs to be removed, or a detail needs to be changed. For instance, a designer might adjust a bounded background detail in a source photo without rebuilding the rest of the composition.

The prompt guides the edit, but it should not be treated as a precision control for brand marks, product features, or factual details. Check that the generated region makes sense alongside the untouched parts of the image and remains appropriate for the page’s purpose.
When to use Generative Expand
Choose Expand when the image itself needs more space beyond its current edges. A tightly cropped photo may need additional surroundings to work in a wide hero area or another composition with a different aspect ratio. Expanding the canvas can provide that area, but it does not ensure the new content will be plausible or suit every crop.

Review the newly created edges as part of the whole composition. Look for abrupt transitions, inconsistent lighting, repeated or implausible details, and visual mismatches with the original. Then preview the asset at the sizes and responsive breakpoints where it will actually appear; a result that looks acceptable in a large editing view may not hold up when cropped on a narrower screen.
A practical way to choose and review
- Identify where the missing or unwanted content is. If it is within the image and can be isolated, start with Generative Fill. If the layout needs image area outside the current boundary, consider Generative Expand.
- Keep the requested change proportional to the job. Fill is suited to a selected region; Expand is suited to extending the surrounding image. Neither is a substitute for reconsidering the source image or the composition when the design needs a major art-direction change.
- Inspect the complete image, not just the generated patch. Check edge transitions, lighting, repeated details, and consistency with the rest of the asset.
- Test the asset in context. Place it in the intended page layout and inspect its behavior at the relevant responsive crops and display sizes.
- Decide whether the image is fit for the page. If the result introduces a misleading product detail, inconsistent brand element, or unsuitable visual, do not use it merely because the edit appears seamless.
Photoshop Generative Expand is not Illustrator Generative Expand
The shared name can be confusing. Photoshop Generative Expand extends a raster image beyond its existing bounds. Illustrator’s separate Generative Expand feature applies to vector artwork: Adobe’s June 17, 2025 update describes it as extending vector graphics or an artboard, with generated vector output that remains editable. That is a different tool and workflow, not a way to expand a Photoshop photograph. Adobe’s Illustrator update explains the vector feature.

Credits and access depend on your plan
Adobe’s Help Center currently lists Photoshop Generative Fill and Generative Expand as standard generative features. Adobe says most standard generations use one credit, while noting exceptions; access also depends on the user’s plan. Partner models are categorized as premium in Adobe’s documentation. Check the current Help Center and your account before relying on a particular allowance or feature access, because plan terms can change. Adobe’s generative credits FAQ describes the credit categories and qualifications.
Adobe’s May 15, 2025 Creative Cloud Pro announcement is historical plan information, not a reliable basis for current prices or present-day entitlements. Read the dated announcement for its context rather than treating its terms as current.

What Adobe’s adoption figure does—and does not—show
Adobe reported that 22 billion assets had been generated in just under two years in an April 24, 2025 Firefly announcement. That is a company-reported cumulative figure; it does not independently establish image quality, designer adoption, or time saved.
