Photoshop errors do not all have the same cause. An app that crashes on launch, a tool that lags, a graphics warning, and a “Scratch disk full” message call for different checks. Start by recording the exact message and when it appears, check Adobe’s known-issues guidance, and then test likely causes one at a time: updates, preferences, plug-ins, GPU, storage, and system resources.
Start with the error and the moment it occurs
Before changing settings, note the exact error text, what you were doing when it appeared, whether it affects one document or every document, and whether it began after a Photoshop or operating-system update or a change to a driver, plug-in, font, device, or preference. This helps distinguish a file-specific problem from a broader startup or system issue.
- Check Adobe’s known issues. Compare your symptom with Adobe’s Photoshop crash and freeze troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart Photoshop and the computer. If Photoshop is unresponsive, force-quit it, then restart the computer and retry the same task.
- Install an available Photoshop update. Use the Creative Cloud desktop app to check for updates, then retest before making several other changes.
- Change one thing at a time. After each diagnostic step, retry the same file and action. If the problem changes, you have a more useful clue than if you alter several settings at once.
If Photoshop crashes or freezes at launch
Adobe lists outdated software, damaged preferences, GPU or driver problems, incompatible optional plug-ins, font-cache problems, security software, and macOS permissions among possible causes. Try the reversible checks before resetting preferences.

Test without optional plug-ins
Hold Shift while launching Photoshop and accept the prompt to skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins. If Photoshop now opens reliably, re-enable or add plug-ins individually to identify the one associated with the failure. Adobe describes this as a way to test for plug-in conflicts in its startup crash guidance.

Reset preferences only after simpler checks
A preference reset restores Photoshop’s settings to their defaults. Back up any settings you want to keep before proceeding. Close Photoshop, then launch it while holding Alt+Ctrl+Shift on Windows or Option+Command+Shift on macOS. Accept the prompt to delete the settings file. Adobe documents this method in its article on Photoshop crashes or freezes on startup.
If Photoshop says the scratch disk is full or low
Messages such as “Scratch disk full,” “Scratch Disk Low,” “Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full,” and “Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full” point to temporary storage, not necessarily a failing computer. Adobe explains that Photoshop uses scratch disks—hard-drive space—as temporary memory when system RAM is low. In its scratch-disk error guidance, updated February 23, 2026, Adobe says to free at least 100 GB on the primary scratch-disk drive. That is Adobe’s recommendation, not a guarantee that the warning will disappear in every situation.

- Check free space on the selected scratch drive. Free space on another drive does not help if Photoshop’s selected scratch disk remains full.
- Free space on that drive. Remove or move files you no longer need, then check the available capacity again.
- Review Photoshop’s scratch-disk selection. In Photoshop preferences, select an additional suitable drive if one is available. Adobe recommends choosing a drive with ample free space and says an internal SSD is ideal in its performance preferences documentation.
- Reduce temporary-storage demand where appropriate. Adobe’s guidance includes reducing History States. This can limit how many prior editing states Photoshop retains, so consider the impact on your workflow before changing it.
Adobe lists APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for macOS scratch disks and NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32 for Windows in its scratch-disk article. Confirm that the drive’s format and connection work with your operating system and Photoshop version. Buying another drive is a later option if you cannot keep enough free space on existing storage; the evidence here does not establish a particular model, speed threshold, or capacity that will suit every workflow.

If the problem involves graphics, flicker, or slow redraw
GPU-related trouble can appear as lagging tools, visual artifacts or flicker, crashes during particular features, missing interface elements, or slow redraw. Use the graphics setting as a diagnostic test rather than assuming that a warning proves the GPU is defective.

- Open Photoshop’s preferences and go to Performance.
- Temporarily deselect Use Graphics Processor, restart Photoshop, and repeat the action that caused trouble.
- If the issue stops, check the driver for the exact graphics processor installed in the computer. Adobe’s GPU and graphics-driver troubleshooting page advises checking the GPU driver; an update is not guaranteed to resolve every adapter problem.
- Re-enable GPU processing and retest. If the symptom returns, the result narrows the investigation to the graphics path and provides useful information for further troubleshooting.
Leaving GPU processing off can disable or affect features that depend on acceleration, including Oil Paint, Perspective Warp, Smooth Brush Resizing, and certain 3D functionality. Adobe describes these limitations and the diagnostic steps in its graphics troubleshooting guide.

For performance problems without a clear scratch-disk message, test one possible source at a time: preferences, GPU, optional plug-ins, memory allocation, cache settings, external devices, network-stored files, and background applications. Use the same representative file and workflow after each adjustment so the comparison is meaningful.
Review Photoshop’s memory allocation
Adobe’s desktop performance preferences guidance, updated October 4, 2026, says Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM by default and advises against allocating more than 85%, leaving memory for the operating system and other applications. Adobe recommends changing the allocation in 5% increments. Treat those figures as Adobe’s settings guidance, not a universal performance guarantee; test your normal workload after each change.

Cache settings can affect how Photoshop handles documents and redraws. Avoid changing them blindly: adjust one setting, then compare the same file and actions. Adobe’s performance preferences article covers these settings alongside memory and GPU options.

Collect useful details if the error persists
Photoshop’s system report can help you or an Adobe support representative investigate a persistent problem. Choose Help > System Info, then copy the report into a text editor. Adobe’s system information troubleshooting page identifies useful details, including the video-card vendor and renderer, video memory, memory used by Photoshop, scratch-volume size and free space, plug-in paths, and plug-ins that failed to load.
For continuing crashes, Adobe also directs users to share system information and crash logs through its basic Photoshop troubleshooting guidance. Include the exact error wording, when it happens, and which diagnostic steps changed the behavior; that context helps make the report actionable.
