To put your logo or design into a Photoshop branding mockup, find the layer that contains the mockup artwork, select its Smart Object, and choose Replace Contents. Select your file and choose Place. Photoshop swaps the artwork while preserving the Smart Object’s existing scale, perspective, warp, and other transformations.

What a Photoshop branding mockup is doing

A branding mockup is usually a layered Photoshop document that makes flat artwork appear on a realistic object, such as packaging, stationery, signage, apparel, or a device. The visible result may combine several layers: a Smart Object for your artwork, shadows, highlights, texture, color adjustments, masks, and a background.

The Smart Object is the part you normally replace. It stores the source artwork separately from the visual effects around it. Photoshop applies the mockup’s transformations to that source so your design follows the object’s position and shape.

Mockup files are not standardized. The artwork layer may have a name such as “Your Design,” “Logo,” or “Place Artwork,” but Adobe’s general instructions do not define a universal name, canvas size, mask arrangement, or layer order. Identify the layer that corresponds to the artwork area in your particular PSD.

Choose the right editing method

Photoshop provides two related commands, but they solve different problems. Decide whether you are substituting a completed file or changing the source artwork itself.

Your goal Use What changes
Put a different logo, label, or finished design into the mockup Replace Contents The selected Smart Object’s source file is replaced; its existing transformations remain.
Change text, colors, layout, or other elements inside the current artwork Edit Contents The Smart Object’s source opens for editing. Saving that source updates the mockup and any linked instances.

Simply placing a new image above the mockup is not equivalent to either command. A newly placed layer will not automatically inherit the selected Smart Object’s perspective, warp, or other setup, and it can cover the mockup’s intended shadows and highlights.

Before you replace anything

  • Keep the original PSD. Work on a copy or save a versioned file so you can return to the supplied mockup.
  • Prepare the replacement file. Use the logo or design you actually want displayed. A transparent PNG, layered PSD, or another format Photoshop can place may be suitable, depending on the mockup and your required editability.
  • Check the mockup’s layer visibility. Expand groups and look for a thumbnail with the Smart Object badge. The artwork layer may be nested inside a folder.
  • Save your work before testing. Replacing content is nondestructive to the Smart Object’s transformations, but you still need a saved document to preserve the result.
  • Know the destination. A presentation image, website graphic, proof for a client, and print file can require different dimensions, color handling, and file formats. The mockup itself does not establish one universal export setting.

Step-by-step: replace a logo or design with Replace Contents

  1. Open the mockup PSD in Photoshop. If the file opens with groups collapsed, expand the relevant folders in the Layers panel.
  2. Find the artwork Smart Object. Select layers one at a time and watch which layer controls the placeholder artwork. Look for the Smart Object icon on the layer thumbnail. Do not assume the layer has a particular name; use the visible result and the file’s own labels.
  3. Select the Smart Object layer. Click the artwork layer in the Layers panel so it is active. Selecting a mask, adjustment layer, shadow, or background instead will expose different commands or replace the wrong content.
  4. Open the layer’s context menu. Right-click the selected Smart Object and choose Replace Contents.
  5. Choose your replacement file. Browse to the logo or design, select it, and choose Place. Photoshop replaces the Smart Object’s source with the selected file.
  6. Inspect the mockup. The new artwork should occupy the same transformed area as the placeholder. Check its crop, orientation, edges, and interaction with the mockup’s shadows, highlights, texture, and masks.
  7. Save the PSD. Saving preserves the editable Smart Object and the ability to replace the artwork again. Use a new filename if you need to retain the untouched original.

Adobe describes the result this way: “The new file replaces the original, retaining all transformations intact.” In practical terms, Photoshop keeps the Smart Object’s existing scaling, rotation, skew, distortion, perspective transformation, or warp and changes the source artwork underneath those settings.

What to check after the replacement

  • Proportion: A very wide or tall logo can look different from the placeholder even when the transformation is correct. Adjust the source artwork’s layout if it needs a different aspect ratio.
  • Transparency: A file with a solid background can hide the mockup’s material, shadows, or highlights. Use transparency when the design calls for it.
  • Color: The mockup may include tint, blend, or adjustment layers. Compare the logo’s appearance against the intended brand colors and the final viewing context.
  • Clipping and masks: If part of the artwork disappears, inspect the mockup’s mask or clipping structure before changing the Smart Object itself.
  • Resolution: A low-resolution replacement can appear soft when the mockup enlarges it. The documented workflow preserves transformations, not missing source detail.

Step-by-step: edit the Smart Object’s existing artwork

Use Edit Contents when you want to revise what is inside the current Smart Object rather than substitute a separate finished file. This is useful for changing wording, adjusting a logo’s colors, moving elements, or correcting the design while keeping the mockup setup.

  1. Select the artwork Smart Object in the Layers panel, using the same identification approach as in the replacement workflow.
  2. Choose Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents.
  3. Edit the source document that Photoshop opens in the application associated with that format. The source may be a Photoshop document or another supported format; its structure and dimensions depend on how the mockup was built.
  4. Save the source document after making your changes. Saving is the action that sends the updated content back to the mockup.
  5. Return to the mockup and verify the updated artwork in context. If the mockup contains linked instances of the same Smart Object, saving can update those instances as well.

Edit Contents is not a command for changing the mockup’s surrounding effects. To alter a cast shadow, paper texture, background, or color treatment, edit the corresponding layer or group in the main PSD while leaving the Smart Object source intact.

Why Smart Objects are useful in mockups

Adobe documents Smart Objects as containers that preserve the source image’s content and quality while allowing nondestructive transformations. You can scale, rotate, skew, distort, apply perspective transformations, and warp the object without permanently changing the stored source in the same way as direct pixel editing.

That separation is what makes a reusable mockup practical. You can test several logos, keep the supplied perspective setup, and return to the source artwork for revisions instead of rebuilding the visual effect each time. Linked Smart Objects can also update when their external source changes, which is useful when one design must appear in multiple places.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the Smart Object editable for as long as possible. Rasterizing it turns the layer into pixels and removes the Smart Object’s source-and-transform workflow. Rasterization can be appropriate for a deliberate final effect, but it is a poor first response to a simple placement or source-editing problem.

Pixel-editing limits and practical workarounds

You cannot paint, dodge, burn, or clone directly on a Smart Object layer as though it were an ordinary pixel layer. Adobe’s documented alternatives are to edit the Smart Object’s contents or add another layer. For example, use Edit Contents to correct the underlying logo, or create a separate pixel layer above the mockup for a small finishing mark that should not alter the reusable source.

  • Edit the source when the change belongs to the logo or design itself.
  • Add a separate layer when the change is a mockup-specific finishing effect, retouch, or annotation.
  • Rasterize only knowingly when you no longer need Smart Object revisions or transformations and accept the loss of that flexibility.

Troubleshooting common mockup problems

The artwork does not follow the object’s perspective

Confirm that you used Replace Contents on the existing artwork Smart Object rather than placing a new layer over it. Replacing the selected Smart Object is the documented operation that retains its transformations. If the result is still wrong, you may have selected a different Smart Object or a decorative layer; temporarily toggle visibility to identify which layer controls the placeholder.

The wrong layer was replaced

Undo the change, then inspect the Layers panel more carefully. Expand nested groups, select likely artwork layers, and look for the Smart Object badge and the visible placeholder they control. Mockups can contain separate Smart Objects for a front, side, lid, or alternate view, so select the one associated with the area you intend to change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The logo is cropped or partly hidden

First determine whether the crop is intentional. The mockup may use a mask or clipping layer to keep artwork inside a package, screen, or label. If the design itself has the wrong proportions, edit the source with Edit Contents and adjust its layout. If the mask is the cause, modify the appropriate mask or clipping structure in the main PSD rather than repeatedly replacing the source file.

The result looks flat or lacks texture

Check that highlight, shadow, texture, and blend-mode layers remain visible above or around the Smart Object. A replacement file with an opaque background can cover those effects. Use a transparent artwork file when appropriate and avoid deleting the mockup’s finishing layers while troubleshooting.

The source opens but changes do not appear

Save the source document opened by Edit Contents, then return to the mockup. Unsaved edits remain only in the temporary source window. If the file contains linked instances, verify that you saved the correct source and allow Photoshop to refresh the linked appearances.

The replacement looks blurry

Inspect the replacement file at its intended display size. Smart Objects preserve source content and transformations, but they cannot create detail that was never present in a small raster image. Replace it with a higher-resolution or vector-based source when the format and mockup support that choice.

Managing multiple views and linked artwork

Some branding mockups show the same identity on several surfaces. Those surfaces may use separate Smart Objects, or they may reference a shared or linked source. Replace the content of each relevant Smart Object when the views are independent. When instances are linked to one external source, editing and saving that source can update the connected appearances; inspect the file’s structure before assuming all views will change together.

Do not force every surface to use identical artwork dimensions. A front panel, spine, tag, and angled side can require different source layouts even when they represent one brand. The individual PSD determines how each Smart Object is transformed and masked.

Saving an editable, reusable mockup

  1. Save the working file as a layered PSD rather than flattening it while you are still making decisions.
  2. Keep the Smart Object layer, masks, adjustment layers, shadows, highlights, and texture groups intact.
  3. Use clear versioned filenames for the original mockup, the customized working file, and approved presentation exports.
  4. If you edited a Smart Object source separately, save that source in a location you can find again, especially when the document uses linked content.
  5. Before handing off the file, reopen or inspect it to confirm that the replacement persists and that the intended layers remain editable.

A layered PSD lets you change the logo later, produce alternate colorways, and adjust the mockup without rebuilding its perspective and lighting treatment. A flattened image is suitable only when you have finished editing and the recipient needs a final visual rather than a reusable working document.

Exporting the finished mockup

There is no single export setting that is correct for every branding mockup. Choose the destination first: a client review may need a convenient image format, a website may impose pixel dimensions and compression, and print production may require specifications from the printer or design brief. Check the mockup’s intended output and preserve the layered PSD separately from any flattened delivery file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before export, inspect the image at its actual delivery size, check transparency and color appearance, and ensure no placeholder layers remain visible. If the recipient needs to revise the logo or alternate views, provide the editable PSD and any separately linked Smart Object sources according to your project’s file-sharing requirements.

A repeatable decision checklist

  • Am I substituting a finished file? Select the artwork Smart Object and use Replace Contents.
  • Am I changing text, color, or layout inside the current artwork? Use Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents, then save the source.
  • Does the new design look misaligned? Verify that the correct Smart Object was selected and that its masks and transformation setup are still present.
  • Do I need pixel-level retouching? Edit the source or add a separate layer; do not rasterize automatically.
  • Will I need revisions or alternate versions? Preserve the layered PSD and editable Smart Object source.
  • Where will the image be delivered? Set export dimensions, format, and color requirements from that destination rather than applying a universal preset.
