Photonic quantum computing uses individual particles of light (photons) in optical circuits to encode, process, measure and transmit quantum information. Photons can travel through fibre with very low decoherence and connect modules naturally, but a useful computer must also generate the right photons, route them through gates, detect them efficiently and react to measurements quickly. Loss, nondeterministic sources and gates, detector limits, feed-forward latency and error-correction overhead currently prevent broad, fault-tolerant quantum advantage. Photonic machines have demonstrated important components, sampling experiments and networked operations; they are not yet general-purpose commercial computers that outperform classical systems on useful workloads.
What is photonic quantum computing?
In a conventional computer, electrical charge moves through transistors. In a photonic quantum computer, quantum information is carried by light. A photon’s path, polarization, time bin or another optical degree of freedom can represent a qubit (a discrete-variable approach). Another approach encodes information in the amplitude and phase of an optical field, producing continuous-variable quantum modes.
The processor is an integrated optical circuit rather than a grid of stationary matter qubits. Waveguides route photons, interferometers mix optical paths, phase shifters and switches change the circuit, and single-photon or photon-number-resolving detectors measure the output. Classical electronics interpret those measurements and may change later optical operations, a process called feed-forward.

The hardware stack
- Photon sources: devices that produce single photons or entangled photon pairs, often with a heralding signal that confirms when a usable photon was created.
- Filters and multiplexers: components that remove unwanted wavelengths or timing events and combine many probabilistic sources to improve the chance of obtaining photons on demand.
- Integrated photonic chips: waveguides, beam splitters, interferometers, phase modulators and switches fabricated on a chip.
- Detectors: single-photon detectors or photon-number-resolving detectors that convert optical events into electrical signals.
- Control and decoding electronics: timing systems, measurement processing and error-correction software that coordinate the optical hardware.
- Fibre links and packaging: connections between chips and modules; coupling losses at these interfaces can be as important as losses inside a chip.
A 2024 Nature Photonics platform paper identifies reliable single-photon sources, integrated photonic chips and single-photon detectors as core elements of the field’s roadmap. It also discusses massive multiplexing as a way to make probabilistic sources more available.

How fast are photonic quantum computers?
There is no single honest speed number. Photons propagate rapidly and optical components can be driven at high clock rates, but computational speed is determined by the rate of useful, correctly detected events, not by the speed of light or the optical carrier frequency. A run is useful only when the required photons are generated, survive every optical element, are detected, and produce measurement results quickly enough for feed-forward and decoding.
Five speed measures that should be kept separate
| Measure | What it tells you | Why it is not the whole answer |
|---|---|---|
| Clock or pulse rate | How often the machine attempts an operation or launches a pulse. | A fast clock can still produce few usable events if source or transmission success is low. |
| Useful event rate | How often the required photons arrive and are detected in the pattern needed for a computation. | Loss and detector efficiency can reduce this rate by orders of magnitude. |
| Gate and measurement fidelity | The probability that an operation or readout is correct, usually conditional on detection. | Conditional fidelity does not include events in which a photon was lost. |
| Logical throughput | How quickly an error-corrected logical operation completes. | Error correction consumes many physical photons, detectors and operations for each logical result. |
| Classical-control latency | Time to measure, decode and apply a feed-forward decision. | Long links and serial control paths can stall an otherwise fast optical circuit. |
One modular architecture analysis from Xanadu uses a 1 MHz quantum clock in its loss model and gives 672 nanoseconds as a worst-case serial-link latency for one classical control path. Those figures describe that architecture and analysis; they are not universal photonic-computer benchmarks.
Does the speed of light make the computer faster?
No. Light’s propagation speed helps move quantum states between components and makes fibre networking attractive, but most computation time is spent creating photons, synchronizing pulses, switching paths, measuring outcomes and handling losses. A photon can cross a short waveguide almost immediately while the system waits for a heralding signal, a detector reset, a decoder or a feed-forward command. In a fault-tolerant design, the number of physical operations required to create one reliable logical operation can dominate the wall-clock time.

- Generate and herald photons. Sources attempt to create single photons or entangled states. A heralding detector or correlated signal indicates whether a source event occurred.
- Synchronize and multiplex. Optical delays, switches and filters align photons from many attempts. Multiplexing raises availability but adds components and opportunities for loss.
- Prepare the input state. Photons are encoded in paths, polarization, time bins or continuous-variable modes.
- Apply interferometric gates. Beam splitters and phase controls interfere optical modes. Measurement-induced schemes can implement entangling operations, but some events are intrinsically probabilistic unless extra resources and feed-forward are supplied.
- Measure. Detectors record photon arrivals or photon numbers. A missing detection may mean loss, an imperfect detector event or an unsuccessful probabilistic gate.
- Feed forward and decode. Classical electronics use measurement results to select later operations and run error-correction or sampling decoders.
- Repeat enough times. Sampling and statistical algorithms require many shots. Fault-tolerant algorithms require repeated syndrome measurements and extensive redundancy before a logical answer is accepted.
What performance has been demonstrated?
Component demonstrations can be impressive without proving a complete, fault-tolerant computer. A 2025 Nature paper describing integrated silicon-photonics modules reported the following values, each conditional on photon detection and therefore excluding loss:

| Metric | Reported value | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| State-preparation-and-measurement fidelity | 99.98% ± 0.01% | Conditional measurement result; loss is not included. |
| Hong–Ou–Mandel visibility | 99.50% ± 0.25% | Interference quality for the reported test. |
| Two-qubit-fusion fidelity | 99.22% ± 0.12% | Conditional fusion fidelity; not a whole-system logical error rate. |
| Chip-to-chip interconnect fidelity | 99.72% ± 0.04% | Reported for detected events and does not account for transmission loss. |
These numbers show that individual operations and interconnects can be engineered with high conditional accuracy. They do not establish that a large computation can preserve enough photons, correct errors and produce a useful logical result at scale.
Is photonic quantum computing faster than superconducting qubits?
There is no universal winner. The systems use different hardware, error models and definitions of throughput. A comparison based only on raw clock rate, qubit count or optical propagation speed can be misleading.
| Dimension | Photonic approach | Superconducting-qubit approach |
|---|---|---|
| Information carrier | Photons in waveguides and optical modes. | Microwave excitations in fabricated superconducting circuits. |
| Connectivity | Optical paths and fibre make inter-chip links natural, subject to coupling and transmission loss. | Connectivity is primarily on-chip; longer-range links require additional microwave-to-optical or other interfaces. |
| Operating environment | Optical circuits may operate at different temperatures, but high-performance detectors and some sources require cryogenic hardware. | Qubits generally require dilution refrigeration and extensive microwave control. |
| Main physical challenge | Photon loss, probabilistic sources and gates, detector efficiency and packaging. | Decoherence, control errors, crosstalk, calibration and refrigerator-scale wiring. |
| Measurement and feed-forward | Optical detection can be fast, but detector recovery, decoding and link latency matter. | Microwave readout and control have their own latency and calibration constraints. |
| Scaling strategy | Manufacture and connect many photonic modules, with very large source, switch and detector counts. | Increase chip integration while preserving qubit quality and control in a cryogenic system. |
| Logical performance | No broadly deployed, useful-scale fault-tolerant advantage has been demonstrated. | No broadly deployed, useful-scale fault-tolerant advantage has been demonstrated either. |
Photonic hardware may ultimately offer advantages for modular networking and manufacturing, while superconducting systems have mature control ecosystems and substantial experimental experience. The relevant question for a specific algorithm is which architecture can achieve the required logical error rate and runtime after all overheads are counted.
What is photonic quantum computing used for?
Quantum simulation of chemistry and materials
Simulating molecular energies, reaction pathways and materials properties is a leading long-term target. Photonic architectures are attractive because optical circuits can implement large interferometers and bosonic states, but chemistry applications that require deep, accurate algorithms still depend on fault-tolerant error correction. Current demonstrations are research experiments, not replacements for classical chemistry software.

Sampling and bosonic experiments
Photons naturally produce interference and many-particle distributions, making optical processors well suited to boson-sampling-style experiments, random sampling and tests of quantum interference. A sampling benchmark can demonstrate behaviour that is difficult to reproduce classically without proving an advantage for an industrial workload. The input distribution, sample quality, loss model and classical comparison must all be specified.
Quantum networking and distributed computing
Fibre-compatible photons can carry entanglement between separated chips or modules. Xanadu has reported chip-to-chip cluster-state networking, and a separate Nature experiment demonstrated distributed quantum computing across an optical network link. These results show that networking primitives are feasible; they do not mean a wide-area fault-tolerant quantum internet is available.
Factoring and cryptanalysis
Algorithms such as Shor’s algorithm are frequently cited as a motivation because a sufficiently large fault-tolerant quantum computer could threaten some public-key cryptography. Photonic implementations remain a future fault-tolerant objective. No present photonic device can factor cryptographically relevant numbers or replace the need for post-quantum security planning.

What limits photonic quantum computers?
Optical loss
Loss is widely identified as the dominant systems hurdle to reaching the fault-tolerant threshold. Every source, waveguide, switch, fibre connector and detector has a chance to lose a photon. Loss compounds across a circuit: if a computation needs many photons to survive, even modest loss at each stage can make a complete event rare. Error-correcting codes can tolerate some loss, but they require additional photons, detectors and operations.
Nondeterministic sources and gates
Many practical photon sources do not emit a usable photon on every attempt, and measurement-induced entangling gates may succeed only for certain detection patterns. PsiQuantum’s technology overview describes nondeterministic photon sources and gates as the biggest obstacle to scaling photonic quantum computing. Multiplexing and resource states can raise success probability, but they increase hardware count, timing complexity and loss.
Detector and filter performance
Detectors must have high efficiency, low noise, accurate timing and, for some algorithms, photon-number resolution. Filters must reject unwanted light without discarding desired photons. Detector recovery time can limit repetition rate, while dark counts can create false events. Improving these components often involves cryogenic operation and tighter control of heat load.

Packaging and fibre coupling
Connecting a chip to fibres or another chip introduces alignment tolerances and interface loss. A processor with excellent on-chip fidelity can still have poor end-to-end performance if photons are lost at couplers, connectors or switches. Low-loss packaging, stable alignment and automated calibration are therefore central engineering requirements.

Classical control and decoding
Feed-forward turns measurement into a control decision. The electronics must acquire detector signals, determine whether an event occurred, update the circuit and decode error syndromes before the next dependent operation. A 672-nanosecond worst-case serial-link latency in one architecture illustrates why control paths must be designed together with the optical circuit.
Manufacturing scale
A useful machine may need very large numbers of sources, switches, detectors and interconnects. Yield variation, thermal drift and calibration overhead grow with component count. Manufacturing a repeatable chip is only one part of the problem; assembling, cooling, controlling and testing the entire optical system are equally important.
Are photonic quantum computers practical yet?
They are practical as laboratory platforms for photonic experiments, component development, sampling, networking demonstrations and studies of error-correction primitives. They are not yet practical as general-purpose, fault-tolerant services that deliver a dependable advantage on commercially important workloads. The gap is not simply a matter of increasing the number of qubits. Systems must reduce loss, make sources and gates more reliable, improve detectors and packaging, and demonstrate logical error rates below the threshold required by a complete error-correction architecture.
Quick Recap
How to evaluate a claimed breakthrough
- Ask whether the result is a component fidelity, a physical-event rate or a logical error rate.
- Check whether the reported value is conditional on detecting photons and whether loss is included.
- Look for the useful event rate, not only the optical clock frequency.
- Identify the number of sources, detectors, switches and interconnects required for the demonstrated circuit.
- Check whether classical post-processing, feed-forward and failed trials are included in the runtime.
- Separate a sampling or networking demonstration from an application-level advantage.
- Require an explicit comparison with the best classical method for the same problem and accuracy.
What should readers remember?
- Photonic quantum computers process quantum information with photons, integrated optical circuits, detectors and classical feed-forward.
- Fast optical propagation and a high pulse rate do not guarantee fast useful computation.
- Loss, nondeterministic sources and gates, detector efficiency, packaging and decoding are the central bottlenecks.
- High conditional component fidelities can coexist with low end-to-end success probability.
- The strongest proposed applications include chemistry and materials simulation, sampling, distributed networking and fault-tolerant cryptanalysis.
- Current systems demonstrate important building blocks and networked experiments, not broad, fault-tolerant commercial quantum advantage.
