A strong photography portfolio website puts the work a prospective client wants to hire in view immediately, then makes it easy to understand your experience and get in touch. Colorlib’s 2026 guide presents 28 examples across genres; treat them as a curated set of ideas, not an objective ranking or a controlled comparison of website platforms.

What should a photography portfolio website include?

Build the site around the work you want to be hired for, not around every image you have made. A useful portfolio gives visitors enough evidence to assess your style and experience, with a straightforward path to ask about a project.

  • A selected body of work: Put strong, relevant images where visitors can see them without an unnecessary splash screen or a feed that buries the portfolio.
  • Clear galleries: Name sections for services or genres clients recognize. Make your primary business easy to find, and keep personal projects distinct when they serve a different purpose.
  • Image context: Where relevant, identify clients, publications, collaborators, locations, or project subjects. These details help visitors understand the assignment behind the images.
  • A concise about page: Explain what you photograph and the kind of work you take on.
  • A direct contact route: Make it simple to enquire. If you offer different services, consider separate routes for commissions, licensing, prints, or other requests.

Features such as pricing, licensing information, client proofing, or a shop belong on the site when they support your business model; they are not mandatory additions for every photographer. These design lessons are drawn from Colorlib’s curated examples.

How should I organize a photography portfolio with several genres?

Use the labels a prospective client would use when looking for your service. Give each distinct offering its own gallery, and put the work most central to your business first. A personal documentary project, for example, may deserve its own section rather than being mixed into a commercial assignment gallery.

The examples in Colorlib’s guide show different useful organizing approaches: Jessica Chou titles projects with the sitter and publication; Dennis Berti gives services their own galleries; Ami Vitale presents long-form work as stories. These are examples of structure, not a single formula. Choose the arrangement that lets a visitor find relevant work quickly.

How many photos should be in a photography portfolio?

There is no universal ideal number established by the examples. Include enough images to show the range and consistency of the work you want, but be selective: remove photographs you would not want to make again or that do not support the kind of assignment you seek. A concise set of well-organized galleries is more useful than adding images simply to make the portfolio longer.

Should I put prices on my photography website?

Choose pricing information according to how clients buy your work. Consumer-facing services can benefit from a session rate or a starting price; commercial assignments may require a quote based on intended use and project scope.

Business approach Useful website information Example reported by Colorlib
Consumer-facing sessions Publish a full rate or starting price if it helps clients assess fit before enquiring. Alex Tran lists portrait sessions at $350 for one hour and $450 for two hours, plus $25 per selected photo. These are the photographer’s stated fees as reported by Colorlib, not market averages.
Wedding coverage A starting price can set expectations while leaving room to discuss the event. Cassandra Ladru’s coverage begins at $5,800, as reported by Colorlib. This is an example-specific stated rate, not a general wedding photography benchmark.
Commercial assignments Ask for details needed to quote, such as intended usage, budget, image count, and timeframe. Colorlib describes these as useful project details; it does not establish a standard commercial rate.

Use an enquiry form that fits the information you actually need. Asking for project details can make an initial conversation more useful, while a published rate can answer a basic fit question without an email exchange.

What is the best platform for a photography portfolio?

No single platform is established as the universal winner. Colorlib’s examples include Squarespace, WordPress, Format, Cargo, SmugMug, Pixieset, Showit, Adobe Portfolio, liveBooks, and custom-coded sites. Its guide is a practical collection of examples, not a controlled benchmark of platform features, performance, or price.

Compare options against your own needs:

  • Image presentation: Can you arrange galleries in a way that suits your work and make the images easy to browse?
  • Business functions: Do you need client galleries, proofing, licensing information, print sales, or other commerce features?
  • Upkeep: Can you realistically keep the site current as your work and services change?

Choose a setup you can maintain, and verify current features and prices with the platform before committing; these details can change.

Do photographers still need a website if they have Instagram?

Colorlib’s case for a website is that it gives photographers more control over how work is organized around desired assignments, what client context accompanies images, whether prices or licensing terms are published, and where enquiries go. That is a practical rationale, not a quantified claim that a website produces a particular business result. Social feeds can show work, but a dedicated site can present services, selected projects, and contact information in a structure you choose.

What do the 28 photography portfolio examples show?

Colorlib’s 2026 guide covers portrait, fashion, advertising, food, product, architecture, landscape, documentary, wildlife, sports, fine-art, family, event, and wedding photography. Its examples point to three especially useful ways to think about a portfolio: how it is organized, how the business is presented, and how it helps qualify enquiries.

Organize around clients, services, or stories

A project can be grouped by client or publication, by service, by genre, or as a longer narrative. The right choice depends on what a visitor needs to understand about your work. Clear naming matters more than copying another photographer’s menu.

Make the business model visible

A portfolio may support assignments, licensing, print sales, books, teaching, workshops, or client proofing. For example, Colorlib notes that Chris Burkard separates production and licensing contacts and offers prints, workshops, and events; Will Burrard-Lucas explains licensing and sells books and prints. These are examples of business models, not requirements for every portfolio.

Help the right client make the next move

Consumer-facing photographers may answer an early budget question with a session or starting price. For commercial work, asking about usage, budget, image count, and timing can help establish the scope of an enquiry. The contact path should match the decision a prospective client needs to make.

How Colorlib describes its 2026 selection

Colorlib says it retained 15 sites from the 32 in its previous version, tested 95 new candidates, and opened more than 300 inner pages while preparing its 2026 guide. Those are the publisher’s reported methodology figures, not independently audited results. They explain the scope of the curation, but do not make the 28 examples an objective ranking of all photography websites.
