For photogrammetry, choose a laptop around the largest projects you expect to process: RAM sets a practical ceiling on project size, while a capable CPU and a discrete GPU help with demanding reconstruction work. Agisoft’s current basic configuration allows 16–32 GB of RAM for a laptop or desktop; its Metashape Professional 2.2 manual recommends 32 GB and a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM. Those are different vendor recommendations for different guidance documents, not one universal minimum.
What hardware matters most for photogrammetry?
RAM limits the size of a project
Agisoft says the maximum project size a machine can process is often limited by available RAM. Photo count alone is not a reliable capacity measure: reconstruction settings also affect memory demand. Its current system requirements page lists 16–32 GB for a basic laptop or desktop configuration, while the Metashape Professional Edition 2.2 manual recommends 32 GB. The manual states, “The number of photos that can be processed by Metashape depends on the available RAM and reconstruction parameters used.” Agisoft’s current requirements and installer information and the Metashape Professional Edition 2.2 User Manual provide the respective guidance.
GPU helps, but check the workload and software guidance
Agisoft describes GPU acceleration for resource-intensive processing steps. Its 2.2 Professional manual recommends a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU with 4 GB or more of VRAM. The current basic requirements page instead gives a shader-count threshold and examples; these recommendations should not be collapsed into a single specification. GPU-core or shader counts from different architectures are not directly comparable by themselves.

Agisoft recommends a high-speed multicore CPU for complex geometry reconstruction. Its basic configuration lists 4–12 cores and a 2.0+ GHz frequency for Intel, AMD, or Apple M1/M2 CPUs; the 2.2 Professional manual gives Intel Core i7 and AMD Ryzen 7 as examples. These are vendor recommendations, not comparative benchmarks of current mobile processors. Agisoft Technical Support also offered dated, non-laptop-specific forum guidance recommending 6–12 cores, the highest possible CPU frequency, one or two GPUs with 4 GB VRAM and 1,400–1,800 CUDA cores (or AMD shader processing units), and 32–64 GB RAM. How Agisoft’s configuration guidance differs
The figures below are vendor-published configuration recommendations, not independent performance results. The basic configuration is explicitly for laptop or desktop use; the advanced configuration is labeled for desktop or workstation use.

The current basic and advanced figures come from Agisoft’s system requirements page; the manual-specific recommendation is from the Metashape Professional Edition 2.2 User Manual. Agisoft identified Metashape 2.3.2 as its latest release when its installer page was accessed in 2026, while the detailed Professional recommendation above is from version 2.2. Check the current requirements for the specific version and edition you plan to use.

What to compare when choosing an actual laptop
The available guidance supports selection criteria, not a ranked list of current laptops. No comparable current-model benchmarks or price-to-performance data establish a best-performing or best-value model. Use these checks when comparing product specifications:
- Memory capacity and upgradeability: Verify installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded. More memory supports larger projects, but no single photo-count threshold follows from RAM alone.
- Discrete GPU and VRAM: Confirm the exact GPU model, available VRAM, and support for your Metashape version. The cited 2.2 manual’s 4+ GB discrete-GPU recommendation is version-specific.
- CPU performance: Check the exact processor, core count, and sustained performance rather than relying on a family name alone.
- Cooling under long processing loads: Photogrammetry processing can be demanding, but the cited sources do not compare laptop cooling or sustained performance across models. Look for model-specific testing if that matters to your workload.
- Storage, portability, battery use, and total cost: These affect day-to-day suitability, but the cited software guidance does not set laptop-level standards or identify winners on these factors.
Is a MacBook Pro suitable?
Apple’s 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro M5 Pro/M5 Max specifications list 20-, 32-, or 40-core GPU configurations and up to 128 GB of unified memory. Those figures do not establish how its GPU compares with the discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPUs named in Agisoft’s recommendations. The cited sources provide no cross-platform performance conversion or winner. Verify that your chosen Metashape version supports the exact hardware and workflow you intend to use before buying. Check GPU settings for your Metashape version
The Metashape Standard Edition 2.3 manual says GPU acceleration covers image matching, depth-map generation, model and DEM generation based on depth maps, texture blending, and model refinement. It advises users with dedicated GPUs to turn off integrated GPUs and the CPU for optimal performance. This is version-specific software guidance, not a general operating-system rule; consult the manual for the edition and version you use. Metashape 2.3 Standard Edition manual.

Agisoft labels its advanced configuration—32–128 GB RAM, a 6–32-core CPU at 3.0+ GHz, and one or two GPUs with 1,920+ unified shaders—as a desktop or workstation setup, not a laptop recommendation. That distinction signals how the vendor frames demanding configurations; it does not prove that a laptop with similar component labels will sustain workstation performance. For very large projects, assess the actual machine’s memory capacity and sustained processing behavior rather than assuming a laptop can match a desktop configuration.
