Photochemistry turns patterned light into a manufacturing tool: light activates reactions that solidify a liquid resin, alter a printed property such as color, or gel an extruded material. The wavelength, exposure pattern, delivered dose and resin chemistry determine what is produced.
That distinction matters. In one demonstrated system, visible light created the object’s architecture while 365-nanometre ultraviolet light changed its color afterward. Other studies use green-light upconversion or orthogonal reactions in hydrogels. These are specific laboratory demonstrations, not proof that every consumer printer can perform all of them.
What photochemistry adds to 3D printing
Conventional 3D printing builds a part by placing or melting material. Photochemical printing instead uses photons to start or control a chemical reaction. In vat photopolymerization, a liquid resin contains molecules that react when illuminated. A projected image, scanned beam or other patterned exposure cures selected regions, linking them into a solid polymer network.
The printed result depends on four variables that must be considered together:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Low Shrinkage and High Precision】ELEGOO photopolymer resin is specially designed for reducing volume shrinkage during the Photocuring process, which ensures the high precision of the print model with smooth finish.
- 【Fast Curing and Great Stability】ELEGOO 405nm Rapid Resin was designed to significantly reduce printing time with its excellent fluidity. Meanwhile its great stability and proper hardness ensure a unworried printing experience and successful printing.
- 【Bright and Stunning Colors】With high quality pigments and photo-initiators inside ELEGOO UV-Curing resin, the models printed with resin have a very pure and stunning color effect just like an artwork.
- 【Wide Applications】Given the outstanding performances, ELEGOO standard resin is suitable for most DLP/LCD 3D printers. Works best with the LCD 3D Printers.
- 【Safe and Secure Packaging】Leak-proof bottle fully wrapped with a plastic bubble bag and exquisite designed package box make sure the resin stays in place where they belong
- Wavelength: the resin and photochemical additives must absorb the available light.
- Pattern: a projected layer image, a scanned spot or another spatially controlled exposure determines where reaction occurs.
- Dose: intensity and exposure time together control how much reaction takes place.
- Chemistry: the formulation determines whether light primarily creates shape or also changes color, conductivity, stiffness or another property.
A 2025 Annual Review article describes vat photopolymerization as one member of a broader family of light-based printing methods, alongside different projection schemes, wavelengths and chemical strategies. The field therefore is not a single machine type or a single resin recipe.
Forming geometry versus changing a property
A useful mental model is to separate building the object from modifying something inside it. The curing reaction fixes the three-dimensional architecture. A second, chemically distinct light exposure can then alter a local property without rebuilding the part. The color-changing demonstration described below uses exactly this separation.
How a light exposure becomes a solid object
1. Prepare a compatible liquid resin
The resin must remain fluid before exposure and contain a photochemical system that responds to the printer’s wavelength. The manufacturer’s cure settings, layer thickness and safety instructions are part of the process; a resin that reacts at one wavelength may not work at another.

The printer exposes only the intended region. A projected pattern can cure an entire layer at once, while a scanned beam traces paths. In either case, the exposure pattern and dose define the geometry and influence cure depth.
3. Initiate polymerization
Illumination activates the resin’s light-sensitive chemistry. Molecules react and connect into a network, turning the illuminated liquid into a solid. Areas receiving insufficient dose remain liquid and are removed or reused according to the resin and printer instructions.

- 【Low Shrinkage and High Precision】ELEGOO photopolymer resin is specially designed for reducing volume shrinkage during the Photocuring process, which ensures the high precision of the print model with smooth finish.
- 【Low Volume Shrinkage】Low shrinkage and good stability reduce volume shrinkage during the curing process. Therefore, after cleaning and post-curing, the molded prints will not be noticeably deformed or cracked over a long period of time.
- 【Low Viscosity & Good Fluidity】With excellent fluidity, the resin can quickly reflow to the area between model and release film, which improves the printing success rate, and reduces printing time.
- 【Safe and Low Odor】ELEGOO standard photopolymer resin is specially formulated with less odor and a very pure and bright color. There is less pungent smell during printing, thus maintaining a freshening printing environment.
- 【Bright and Stunning Colors】With high quality pigments and photo-initiators inside ELEGOO UV-Curing resin, the models printed with resin have a very pure and stunning color effect just like an artwork.
4. Repeat until the height is complete
Layer-by-layer exposure extends the cured network through the vat. The final object is a record of where enough light reached the resin at each step, not simply a copy of the projected image.
5. Post-process carefully
Washing removes uncured resin, and any required secondary exposure completes the specified cure. Post-processing conditions can affect mechanical properties and the visibility of later photochemical effects, so follow the resin maker’s stated procedure rather than assuming that a generic UV lamp is equivalent.

A demonstrated example: visible light builds, ultraviolet light colors
In a 2024 Nature Communications study, Chin, Ovsepyan and Boydston used two wavelengths for two jobs. Visible light cured a resin into a three-dimensional structure. A photoacid generator responded to 365-nanometre ultraviolet exposure by producing local acidity. That pH change switched dyes in the printed material, allowing multicolor patterns from a single resin vat.
Why one vat can produce multiple colors
The resin contains pH-responsive dyes rather than separate batches of colored resin. After the visible-light print establishes the shape, the UV beam or pattern is directed only at selected regions. Local acid generation changes the dye state in those regions, so different exposure locations display different colors while the underlying polymer architecture remains the same.
The thickness limitation
The authors found that color modulation in thicker samples was limited by light penetration. UV photons do not reach every depth equally; attenuation reduces the chemical change farther from the illuminated surface. A color pattern that works in a thin feature may therefore become weaker, incomplete or nonuniform in a thicker wall.

- ②【Low Shrinkage】- During the curing process, the standard resin has a low shrinkage rate, providing accurate size and shape of the printed parts.
- ③【Good Stability】- Standard resin has good tolerance to weak acids, greases, etc., and the printed works are not easy to deform, which is suitable for the manufacturing of most printing needs.
- ④【Easy to Post-process】- The surface of standard resin printed works is hard and smooth, and it is easy to color after printing. It is one of the best choices for hand-made printing.
- ⑤【High Cost-Effectiveness】- Standard resin provides good performance and durability at a relatively low cost, making it an affordable choice for those with a limited budget.
This result should not be read as a general color-printing capability. It is a proof of a particular resin, dye, photoacid-generator and exposure sequence. Ordinary vat printers do not automatically gain multicolor output merely because they use light.
How the main light-driven approaches differ
The following comparison describes what each approach controls and what the cited demonstrations actually establish. It does not rank them by speed, resolution or cost; those values were not reported on a common basis.
| Approach | Material delivery | Light or reaction role | Demonstrated function | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vat photopolymerization | Liquid resin in a vat | Patterned light cures selected resin volumes | Three-dimensional polymer structures | Wavelength, dose and resin chemistry determine cure depth and feature quality |
| Dual-wavelength vat system | Single liquid resin vat | Visible light forms geometry; 365-nm UV creates local acidity | Multicolor patterns and structures | Color change in thicker samples was limited by light penetration |
| Green-light upconversion photocuring | Photocurable resin used for digital light processing | Triplet-triplet-annihilation upconversion enables Type I curing | Digital light processing with green light at low power density | The reported demonstration used ambient oxygen and below 10 mW/cm²; this is not a universal printer specification |
| Orthogonal photochemistry with extrusion | Hydrogel ink deposited through a nozzle | A separate photochemical reaction reinforces or gels the extruded material | Tough conductive hydrogels, pressure sensors and a temperature-responsive actuator | This is an extrusion route, distinct from vat printing |
Green light and upconversion: a specific low-power demonstration
A 2024 ACS Central Science paper reported a triplet-triplet-annihilation upconversion system. In that chemistry, absorbed lower-energy photons are combined so the reaction can access an energy level normally associated with shorter-wavelength light. The authors used the approach for Type I photocuring with green light at a power density below 10 mW/cm², in ambient oxygen, and demonstrated digital light processing.
Three qualifiers are essential when interpreting that result. First, the less-than-10-mW/cm² figure belongs to the authors’ formulation and setup, not to light-based printing as a whole. Second, ambient-oxygen operation was demonstrated for that system; many other formulations may behave differently. Third, a successful laboratory DLP exposure does not establish compatibility with a particular commercial projector, vat, resin tank or post-cure process.
Extruding conductive hydrogels with orthogonal photochemistry
Vat printing is not the only way to combine light and chemistry. A 2021 Nature Communications study used orthogonal photochemistry-assisted extrusion to make tough conductive hydrogels. Material was deposited through a nozzle, then chemical reactions strengthened the printed network without relying on the same curing sequence used in a resin vat.

The study reported gelation in approximately 30 seconds for its specific strategy. Its printed structures functioned as pressure sensors and included a temperature-responsive actuator. Those demonstrations show how photochemistry can add an electrical or mechanical function to an extruded soft material, rather than merely hardening a conventional plastic shape.
A practical workflow for evaluating a photochemical printing idea
Whether you are selecting a resin for a standard printer or assessing a new light-responsive concept, work through these steps before exposing material:
- Define the intended function. Decide whether light is only creating geometry or must also control color, conductivity, sensing, actuation or another property.
- Map every reaction to a wavelength. Record the printer’s emission range and the absorption requirements of the photoinitiator, dye, photoacid generator or upconversion system.
- Check optical depth. Estimate how far the relevant light must travel through the part. The dual-wavelength color study shows why a surface effect may not extend uniformly through a thick feature.
- Confirm the exposure window. Use the resin or formulation’s specified intensity, layer time and dose. Do not substitute a UV lamp or projector without checking spectral output and irradiance.
- Separate the print and modification tests. First verify that the structure cures correctly. Then test the secondary color or property-changing exposure on thin samples before attempting complex geometry.
- Measure the result at depth. Check color, conductivity or mechanical response at the surface and in the interior. A visually successful top layer can hide incomplete conversion below.
- Document atmosphere and temperature. Oxygen, ambient conditions and heating can affect photochemical reactions. The green-light study’s ambient-oxygen result should be recorded as a system-specific condition, not assumed elsewhere.
- Follow handling and disposal instructions. Uncured photopolymer and photoactive additives require the precautions specified by their manufacturers and local regulations.
Common failure modes and what they indicate
The part is under-cured or remains tacky
Possible causes include a wavelength mismatch, insufficient dose, excessive layer thickness or resin that has aged or been contaminated. Verify the printer’s optical output and the resin’s recommended exposure before increasing dose; overexposure can blur features and make later property modulation harder to control.
A color pattern appears only near the surface
That symptom is consistent with limited penetration of the modifying light. Reduce feature thickness for a controlled test, expose from more than one direction if the setup permits, or redesign the pattern so the required optical path is shorter. The dual-wavelength study specifically observed this thickness dependence.

An extrusion collapses before it gels
In an extrusion process, deposition speed, ink rheology and the timing of the photochemical reaction must match. The approximately 30-second gelation value reported for the conductive-hydrogel system cannot be transferred directly to another ink or nozzle.
Where the field is heading
A 2025 review identifies healthcare, sustainability and 4D fabrication as active areas for light-based polymer printing. In healthcare, the attraction is the possibility of placing material precisely and then adding a tailored biological or mechanical function. Sustainability work examines material efficiency and chemical routes that could reduce waste. Four-dimensional fabrication aims for structures that change shape or another property over time in response to their environment.
These labels describe directions of investigation, not readiness guarantees. A formulation suitable for a controlled laboratory demonstration may lack the sterilization data, long-term stability, recyclability, environmental profile or manufacturing repeatability required for deployment.

Choosing materials and equipment responsibly
For a conventional vat printer, a UV-curable photopolymer resin is the relevant material category because vat photopolymerization cures liquid photoresin with light. Compatibility must be checked against the printer’s wavelength, vat design, exposure controls and manufacturer-approved materials. A category description alone does not identify a suitable product.
Specialized uses require additional scrutiny. Do not treat a general-purpose resin as appropriate for medical, biological, food-contact or skin-contact applications without explicit documentation. For any photoactive formulation, retain the safety data sheet, use the specified protective equipment and prevent uncured liquid from entering drains or the environment.
What these demonstrations establish—and what they do not
- They establish that light can cure liquid resin into three-dimensional polymer networks.
- They show that separate wavelengths can divide structural fabrication from local property control, including color.
- They demonstrate a green-light, low-power upconversion route under the conditions reported by one study.
- They show that orthogonal photochemistry can reinforce extruded conductive hydrogels for sensing and actuation.
- They do not provide a field-wide ranking of speed, resolution, cost or application suitability.
- They do not prove that every printer can print multicolor objects from one vat, cure with green light, or fabricate conductive actuators.
The practical takeaway is to treat wavelength, dose, optical penetration and formulation as a coupled design problem. Photochemistry makes 3D structures possible, but the useful result comes from matching the reaction to the printer and then validating the finished material—not from light exposure alone.
