If you’re using Windows, right-click the photo and choose Open with > Choose another app, then try an installed image viewer. If it opens there, the photo is readable and the problem is likely the app Windows launches when you double-click. If it does not, check whether the issue affects one image or format, or whether the viewer itself needs repair.
Try another app to see where the problem is
- In File Explorer, right-click the photo.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Choose an installed image viewer and try opening the file.
Windows provides this route for selecting an app to open a file. If another viewer opens the photo, the file can be read by that app; the double-click issue may be the default app or its association with that file type. If no available viewer opens it, note the exact error and try another photo before changing settings.
Change the default app for the photo’s file type
If a different viewer opens the file, assign your preferred app to that extension. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, then choose the app or find the photo’s file type and select the preferred app. Microsoft documents setting defaults by file type; the exact layout can differ between Windows versions. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps.
Use the extension shown at the end of the filename, such as .jpg or .png, to identify the type. Do not rename the extension as a supposed conversion: changing a filename ending does not change the image’s contents.

Repair or reset Microsoft Photos
If Microsoft Photos is the app you want to use and it fails to open photos, repair the app before resetting it. In Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the equivalent apps list in your version), find Microsoft Photos, open its advanced options, and select Repair if available. Microsoft’s guidance is to select Reset if Repair is unavailable or does not solve the problem. Reset is a later step because it may change the app’s state. Microsoft’s repair and reset instructions describe this sequence.
Check for a format-specific issue
If the affected photo has a less commonly supported format, such as HEIF or HEIC, format support may be relevant. That is a possibility to check, not a diagnosis for every image that will not open. Microsoft’s cited guidance concerns a specific Windows 10 Photos video-editor error involving HEIF or HEVC files; it is not a universal explanation for a double-click failure. Use the pattern of failures to choose the next check
- One viewer fails, another opens the image: Check the default app for that file type, then repair the failing viewer if it is Microsoft Photos.
- Only one extension fails: Check whether the preferred viewer supports that format and note any format-specific error.
- One image fails in every viewer: Record the error and test another image with the same extension; the available evidence does not establish the cause from a double-click symptom alone.
- Many types of photos fail in Microsoft Photos: Try Repair, then Reset if needed and available. Microsoft Photos and Photos Legacy are separate app experiences, so check which one is installed and being opened.
If it still will not open, collect these details
Before seeking further help, note your Windows version, the photo’s extension, the exact error message (if any), whether the same image opens in another app, and whether other photos open. These details distinguish a default-app problem from a viewer issue or a file-specific or format-specific failure.
