A photo-to-lithophane generator turns an image into a printable 3D panel whose changing thickness makes the picture visible when light shines through it. The effect can look like an impossible trick: the print is not a flat photo, but a physical relief that uses thin areas for brighter tones and thick areas for darker ones.
What a lithophane is—and why a 3D print can show a picture
A lithophane encodes an image as variations in the thickness of a translucent panel. Light passes more easily through thin sections, making them look bright; thicker sections block more light and appear dark. The image is clearest with illumination behind the print, rather than ordinary light falling on its face. The generator’s guide describes the conversion from image brightness to model thickness and the resulting printable geometry.
In practical terms, the generator maps pixel values into a surface, then exports a model that a slicer can prepare for a 3D printer. The printer is making a physical image, but the image depends on transmitted light to become visible.

Choose a photo
Start with a recognizable subject and useful tonal contrast. Preview and image-adjustment options can help, but results vary with the source photo, material, print, and lighting; no generator can ensure that every image will reproduce equally well.

Choose the panel shape and size
Upload the image to a lithophane generator and select a shape, dimensions, image position, and thickness settings. The generator guide describes flat and shaped options. Check the preview before exporting so the subject is positioned and scaled as intended.

Export the model
Export a file your workflow supports. STL is a broadly used format for model geometry. A 3MF may also include print-preparation details for supported slicers; what carries over depends on the file and software. The cited generator describes both STL and print-ready 3MF workflows. Slice and print
Open the model in your slicer, check the orientation and profile, and use the generator’s instructions as a starting point rather than a universal recipe. For its colour workflow, 3D-Lithophane.com specifies 0.1 mm layers and 100% infill, and suggests a 0.2 mm nozzle for finer colour detail while noting that a 0.4 mm nozzle can also work. Those settings are specific to that workflow; printer, material, and slicer profiles can change the result. Confirm the live instructions before printing.

Backlight the finished panel
Place the print in front of a light source. Even white backlighting is a useful baseline; a warm or coloured light changes the appearance. A window, LED panel, or light box can work, depending on how you want to display it. Orient the print so light passes through the image rather than simply illuminating its front.

Classic monochrome versus layered CMY colour
A conventional lithophane creates its image through thickness alone and is commonly made in a light-coloured material. A separate colour method described in the generator’s 2026 instructions adds thin cyan, magenta, and yellow layers over a white lithophane base. In that method, the base supplies the light-and-dark image while the coloured layers tint the transmitted light. It is one specific technique, not a description of every colour lithophane.

The colour workflow described by 3D-Lithophane.com can produce a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Creality Print, or PrusaSlicer, or a ZIP containing separate filament STLs for other slicers. Its instructions say to set initial layer height to 0.1 mm because the generated 3MF does not set it; leaving it at 0.2 mm can distort the front colours. Check the setting in your slicer rather than assuming a profile imported it correctly. Software and profiles may change. See the generator’s colour instructions.

What you need to make and display one
- A photo and a lithophane generator: The generator creates the model from image data and provides the export workflow.
- An FDM 3D printer and suitable filament: ELEGOO’s manufacturer guide covers FDM lithophane printing and identifies white or natural PLA as suitable material options. Filament transmission and tonal results can vary by product. Read ELEGOO’s lithophane guide.
- A backlight or a bright window: An LED panel or light box can provide controlled illumination; a window is a simple alternative. A dedicated display accessory is optional.
If you do not own a printer, the cited guidance supports the general relevance of an FDM printer, but it does not establish a specific model recommendation or guarantee that a particular machine will produce a given result.

Photo privacy: what the generator says happens
The flat-generator page says the browser converts a photo into a grid of height values and sends those values to build the model, while the photo itself is not saved. That is the operator’s description of its own processing, not an independent security assessment. Review the live page and its privacy information before uploading an image you consider sensitive.
