Laboratory researchers have developed fluorescent strips that respond to phosgene gas, but the reported work does not establish a certified alarm or a product available for purchase. In a 2017 study, an experimental strip identified as OPD-TPE-Py-2CN changed fluorescence from blue to green when exposed to phosgene; the paper reported a 1.87 ppm detection limit for that system.
What the 2017 fluorescent strip does
Xie and colleagues designed OPD-TPE-Py-2CN using aggregation-induced emission (AIE), a fluorescence approach in which changes in molecular aggregation affect the light emitted by a material. The paper’s abstract describes the device as an experimental strip for gaseous phosgene and reports that its fluorescence changes from blue to green on exposure. The authors report a 1.87 ppm detection limit for their experimental system. That is a study-specific sensor result—not an occupational exposure limit, a recommended safe level, or evidence that the strip is a certified alarm. The paper describes research and does not document field validation or certification.

Subsequent papers describe different sensing materials and signals. Their figures should be read within each study’s own test conditions: a solution detection limit, an air-atmosphere result, and a response time are not interchangeable measures, and these studies do not establish a standardized head-to-head comparison.

In particular, the 2019 value is measured in solution, whereas the 2017 strip and the 2020 air-atmosphere result concern gas or air testing. Differences in sample phase, chemistry, methods, and device design mean these numbers cannot be ranked as if they came from one shared test.
What a fluorescence change does—and does not—show
A visible or UV-excited color change can be useful in sensor research because it provides an observable response to exposure under the study’s conditions. It does not, on its own, show that a device will reliably detect a dangerous concentration in a workplace or emergency, that it has been independently validated in the field, or that it meets a regulator’s requirements. The cited studies describe sensor development; they do not document certification or operational validation.

The FTS-Pi study’s green-to-blue signal is viewed under 365 nm UV illumination. A 365 nm UV flashlight is only an illumination aid for viewing fluorescence in that experimental setup; it is not a phosgene detector or protective equipment, and its use does not make the research strip a commercial or validated monitor.

Phosgene is a serious inhalation hazard. A Royal Society of Chemistry editorial explains that the gas reacts with lung proteins, disrupting the blood–air barrier and suffocating victims. Read the RSC editorial. The stakes make it especially important not to mistake a promising laboratory signal for an operational safety assurance.

Availability and safety limits
The cited papers do not establish that OPD-TPE-Py-2CN, FTS-Pi, TPE-CI, or BDY strips are currently sold commercially. They also do not verify a current official exposure limit, required workplace monitoring system, or emergency procedure. Do not approach a suspected release, attempt to test the atmosphere yourself, or rely on a research strip for a life-safety decision. Use current official safety guidance and appropriate established monitoring procedures for operational decisions.
