Only a small number of current smartphones offer a battery that an owner can replace. The clearest documented examples are Fairphone (Gen. 6), Fairphone 5 5G and Samsung model SM-F776B, although the Samsung record does not identify a consumer-facing name or prove broad retail availability. A genuinely user-replaceable battery is one you can remove and install yourself using the permitted tools and instructions, not merely a battery that a service center can replace.
Before buying, verify the exact model record, the removal procedure, spare-part supply, post-service sealing, battery-cycle rating and software compatibility. A phone can satisfy a durability rule without having an old-fashioned snap-off back.
What “user-replaceable battery” actually means
User-replaceable does not necessarily mean that the rear cover pops off with a fingernail. Under the EU ecodesign approach, the battery-removal process must be feasible for a layperson in a normal use environment with no tool, a tool supplied with the product or spare part, or basic commonly available tools. The manufacturer must provide a process that an end user can follow.
That definition is broader than the classic removable-battery phone. A design may use screws, clips or a carefully specified opening procedure and still qualify. Conversely, a retailer title that says “replaceable battery” is not proof that the owner can perform the work safely, that the required tool is included, or that replacement parts remain available.

The rules also contain alternative durability routes. Therefore, regulatory compliance alone does not guarantee a snap-off rear cover or a five-minute battery swap. Check the exact model’s documentation and database entry.
Phones with documented user-replaceable batteries
The following models have explicit manufacturer or European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) evidence. Availability, naming and specifications can vary by country, so treat the model identifier as more reliable than a retailer’s description.
| Model identifier | User-replaceable battery | Rated capacity | Published battery cycles | Ingress rating | Other published endurance | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairphone (Gen. 6), FP6 | Yes | 4,315 mAh | 1,000 | IP55 | 53 h 52 min endurance per cycle | European Commission EPREL record accessed in 2026 |
| Fairphone 5 5G, FP5 | Yes | Not stated in the cited product information sheet | Not stated in the cited product information sheet | Not stated in the cited product information sheet | Not stated in the cited product information sheet | Fairphone official product information sheet |
| Samsung SM-F776B | Yes | 4,174 mAh | 1,200 | IP48 | Not stated in the cited EPREL record | EPREL record accessed in 2026; consumer-facing name and broad retail availability are not established by that record |
The FP6 entry is the most complete current example in the available records: it combines an explicit “Battery user-replaceable: Yes” status with capacity, cycle, ingress-protection and endurance figures. The FP5 product sheet confirms user replacement but does not, in the cited material, establish comparable capacity or cycle figures. The SM-F776B entry confirms the characteristic in EPREL, but you should identify what that model is called in your market before treating it as a readily purchasable option.

1. Confirm the exact model identifier
Start with the manufacturer’s technical document or an authoritative registry such as EPREL. Record the complete identifier, including regional suffixes. Two phones sold under similar names can use different batteries, covers, fasteners or software. A listing that omits the identifier is difficult to verify.
- Look for an explicit field such as “Battery user-replaceable: Yes.”
- Match the identifier on the phone, box, support page and replacement-part listing.
- Check the country or region, because regulatory status and stock differ by market.
2. Read the actual removal procedure
Find the service or user instructions before ordering. Determine whether the process requires a supplied tool, a standard basic tool or no tool. Note every step involving clips, screws, adhesive, connectors and seals. If opening the phone can tear a gasket or damage a cable, that is part of the ownership cost even when the battery itself is accessible.
Do not assume that a tool-free process is automatically risk-free. The relevant question is whether a careful layperson can complete the specified procedure without damaging the phone, and whether the instructions explain reassembly and safety checks.

3. Verify replacement-part supply
A replaceable battery is useful only while a compatible replacement can be obtained. Check the battery part number, connector arrangement, physical dimensions and any required screws or clips. The European Commission’s guidance says batteries and required non-reusable fasteners must be available to end users and professional repairers until at least seven years after the model’s end of placement on the EU market.
The Tool Desk

Confirm the model’s market timeline and regional stock rather than treating seven years as a guarantee of unlimited worldwide availability.
4. Check what happens to sealing after service
Ingress-protection ratings describe the phone as designed and tested, not every phone after repeated opening. The FP6 is recorded at IP55, while Samsung SM-F776B is recorded at IP48. Those are useful comparisons, but they do not guarantee that a user replacement preserves factory sealing.
- Find out whether a replacement gasket or adhesive is required.
- Check whether the instructions specify a torque, pressure or closure sequence.
- Assume water and dust resistance may be reduced if the seal is damaged, missing or incorrectly fitted.
- Keep the phone away from liquid until you are confident the reassembled enclosure meets the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Compare capacity and cycle-life evidence
Capacity is normally given in milliampere-hours (mAh), while cycle life describes how many charge-and-discharge cycles a battery is rated to withstand under the stated test conditions. The FP6 record lists 4,315 mAh and 1,000 cycles. The SM-F776B record lists 4,174 mAh and 1,200 cycles.
These figures are database specifications, not a promise that every owner will see identical runtime or that the battery will reach exactly that number of cycles. Runtime depends on display brightness, network conditions, processor load, temperature, charging habits and software. A higher cycle figure can support longer service life, but it does not by itself make one phone the better choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Check software and electrical compatibility
The replacement must be electrically and mechanically compatible with the phone. Confirm the part number and supported model before installation. European guidance says software must not be used to impede replacement with another compatible battery, but that does not make every battery with a similar shape safe to use.

- Use a battery specified for the exact model identifier.
- Check the rated voltage, connector and protection circuitry where the manufacturer publishes them.
- Install only a part whose documentation says it is compatible with the phone’s software and hardware revision.
- Update the phone before service if the manufacturer’s instructions require a particular software version; do not assume an update will fix an incompatible part.
What a replacement usually involves
Exact procedures differ, so the model’s instructions take priority. A typical owner-service sequence has these decision points:
- Prepare the workspace. Back up important data, power the phone off completely and work on a clean, dry, static-safe surface. Gather the specified replacement battery, tools and any new fasteners or seals.
- Make the phone safe to open. Remove accessories and follow the instructions for reducing electrical risk. Never work on a powered phone if the procedure tells you to disconnect power first.
- Open the enclosure as directed. Use only the permitted tool and force. Do not pry against a display, camera module or battery pouch, and stop if clips, adhesive or cables resist the documented sequence.
- Disconnect and remove the old battery. Keep metal tools away from battery contacts. A swollen, punctured, hot or leaking battery should not be handled as a routine replacement.
- Install the matching part. Route cables exactly as shown, fit the specified fasteners and avoid bending or crushing the cell.
- Reassemble and inspect the seal. Replace non-reusable fasteners or gaskets where required. Check that the cover closes evenly and that no cable is trapped.
- Test before normal use. Power on, verify charging, confirm that the operating system recognises the battery and check cameras, buttons, wireless connections and other functions affected by opening.
If the instructions require specialist equipment, destructive adhesive removal or a repair skill beyond the intended layperson process, treat the phone as serviceable rather than practically user-replaceable for your purposes.
How long can a replaceable-battery phone last?
Battery replacement removes one of the most common reasons people abandon a functioning phone, but it does not stop software support, storage limits, physical wear or network changes. A realistic longevity assessment combines several factors:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Spare-battery horizon: verify the seven-year EU availability requirement where it applies and check actual regional stock.
- Cycle rating: use the published number as a durability indicator, not a guaranteed ownership period.
- Repair documentation: clear instructions and parts lists reduce the chance that a simple replacement becomes a damaged-phone repair.
- Software support: a replaceable cell cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or apps that no longer run.
- Enclosure durability: ingress protection and the quality of reassembly affect whether the phone survives years of use.
- Performance and storage: processor speed, memory, camera hardware and storage determine whether the phone remains adequate after the first battery swap.
For example, FP6’s 1,000-cycle rating and FP5’s documented user replacement make them strong candidates for owners who prioritise repairability. The SM-F776B record shows 1,200 cycles and IP48, but its market identity and availability require additional regional verification. No single published number establishes which phone will last longest for every user.

The European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment reported that less than 10% of mobile phones placed on the market in 2019 had a user-replaceable, non-embedded battery. It also reported that none of the best-selling smartphone models in Europe in 2019 had one. The scarcity is therefore structural, not evidence that every current listing has been overlooked.
The regulatory landscape is changing. A European Commission Directorate-General for Environment notice dated 14 July 2026 states that, under the EU Batteries Regulation, portable batteries in products sold in the EU must generally be removable and replaceable by consumers. The same notice explains that some categories are exempt and that a 14 July 2026 delegated act added six categories, including wearables, fitness trackers, electric toys and ATEX products.

Phones must still be assessed under the rules that apply to smartphones and their batteries. Do not transfer an exemption or requirement from another battery-powered product to a phone without checking the applicable category.

Common buying mistakes
Confusing “replaceable” with “repairable”
A phone may be repairable by a professional while its battery is not intended for owner replacement. Look for the explicit user-replaceable designation and the layperson-compatible procedure.
Buying by family name alone
Regional variants can use different identifiers and parts. Match the exact model code before buying either the phone or a spare battery.
Ignoring seals and fasteners
Opening a phone can require new gaskets, adhesive or screws. Include those parts in the replacement plan and do not claim the original ingress rating after service without following the manufacturer’s reassembly process.
Assuming a high mAh number guarantees long runtime
Capacity is only one input. Screen technology, radios, processor efficiency and software can outweigh a modest capacity difference.
Waiting until the battery is swollen
Replace a battery when health has declined, not after swelling, overheating or physical damage appears. A damaged lithium battery needs safe handling and may require professional service.
A practical decision checklist
Before ordering a phone advertised as user-replaceable, confirm every item below:
- The exact model identifier has an authoritative “Battery user-replaceable: Yes” entry or an equivalent manufacturer statement.
- The removal instructions are available and suitable for a layperson using the permitted tools.
- A separately sold battery has the exact matching part number.
- Required non-reusable fasteners, gaskets or tools can be sourced in your region.
- The expected battery-availability period is understood, including the EU seven-year rule where applicable.
- Ingress protection and the effect of opening the enclosure are clear.
- Capacity and cycle figures are identified as rated or tested specifications, not guaranteed real-world runtime.
- The replacement is electrically, mechanically and software-compatible.
- Software-support duration, storage and performance meet your expected ownership period.
- The phone is actually sold in your market under a name and warranty that you can verify.
For buyers who value owner service above the thinnest design, the documented FP6 and FP5 examples are the most straightforward starting points in the available evidence. The Samsung SM-F776B record is promising on paper, but its consumer identity and local availability must be established before purchase.
