If your phone shuts off and won’t turn back on, it may have a drained battery, a charging problem, a software freeze, or a hardware or display fault. The symptoms alone don’t identify the cause. Start by checking the charger and outlet, let a deeply depleted battery charge, then try the restart procedure for your exact model. If the phone still shows no response—or seems to work but its screen stays black—contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
Why a phone can shut off and appear dead
A phone that will not restart may simply have run out of charge or may not be receiving power through its charging setup. A temporary software freeze can also make it seem unresponsive. Samsung lists a drained battery, a temporary software freeze, a system malfunction, and a circuitry-related hardware issue among possible reasons a Galaxy device will not turn on. A black display may also be a screen problem rather than proof that the entire phone has failed.
Because several faults can look alike, troubleshoot the power connection first and use the instructions for your phone’s specific make and model.
Check the outlet, charger, cable, and port
- Connect the phone to a known-working wall outlet using a compatible cable and power adapter. Make sure both ends are fully seated.
- If possible, test the cable and adapter with another device. If either does not work, try a known-working compatible cable or adapter instead. Google recommends this check in its Android charging and power troubleshooting and Pixel charging and power guidance.
- Remove a case if it prevents the connector from fitting securely.
- Look for visible debris or damage on the cable and charging port. Samsung also advises checking for signs such as corrosion, bent pins, liquid exposure, overheating, swelling, or physical damage. Do not insert a metal object into the port.
Do not assume you need to buy a new cable or adapter before testing one that is known to work. Check connector and device compatibility; not every phone uses the same charging connection or has the same power requirements.

Give a deeply depleted battery time to respond
A phone with a fully depleted battery may not show a charging icon or respond immediately after you plug it in. Keep it connected to a working charger and follow the guidance for its model rather than treating one brand’s timing as a rule for all phones.
- iPhone: Apple advises charging for one hour before trying again if an iPhone will not turn on. See Apple’s instructions for an iPhone that won’t turn on or has a black screen.
- Pixel: Google says a Pixel that was completely drained and left off for a long time may show no charging icon, vibration, or display response for up to 25 minutes while plugged in. See Google Pixel Help.
Force-restart it using the right button sequence
A force restart can help if the phone is frozen, but button combinations differ by device. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model; do not assume a sequence for one phone works on another.

iPhone with Face ID
Apple’s sequence is to quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Older iPhones with a Home button use different combinations. Follow the model-specific steps on Apple Support.

Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s cited Galaxy instructions say to hold the Power/Side button and Volume Down together for at least seven seconds, releasing when the logo appears or the phone vibrates. Refer to Samsung’s Galaxy troubleshooting page for the device-specific guidance.

Google Pixel and other Android phones
Google’s initial Pixel restart check is to hold Power for 5–7 seconds. Android guidance also starts with a Power-button restart check, but further steps depend on the device. Follow Google Pixel Help or Android Help for the instructions that match your phone.
Find out whether the screen is the problem
If the phone vibrates, rings, or otherwise appears to respond while its display stays blank, the screen may be the issue. A blank screen by itself does not establish that the phone is otherwise working, but it is a useful clue.

Google suggests trying a reboot, waiting, then calling the phone from another device or using Find Hub. If it rings while the display remains blank, Google advises contacting an authorized repair center. See the diagnostic steps in Google Pixel Help.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
If a known-working charging setup and the correct force-restart procedure produce no response, contact the phone’s manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Check the warranty and available service options before paying for a repair. Apple says service may be needed if an iPhone still will not turn on; Google directs users to repair support when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem.

A manual reset should not be an early troubleshooting step. Google warns that its manual Fastboot reset erases all device data. Consider a data-erasing reset only as a last resort, after understanding the consequences and checking whether your data is backed up.
