A smartphone can get warm during demanding use or charging; warmth alone does not prove its battery is failing. But extreme heat, swelling, leaking, an unusual odor or sound, smoke, or visible damage are reasons to stop using and charging it. What to do next depends on which signs you see.
When is a warm phone normal?
Resource-intensive activities can make a phone warm. Google lists video playback, games, high-definition recording, hotspot use, heavy data transfers, setup, and restoring a backup among activities that can warm Pixel phones. Doing them while charging can add heat. Google’s Pixel overheating guidance describes these situations, but behavior varies by model.
As a phone heats up, it may slow down, charge more slowly, disable camera functions or connectivity, enter a low-power mode, show a temperature warning, or shut down to protect itself. These responses can be protective; repeated shutdowns are a reason to contact Pixel support. If you use another brand, check its own support guidance.

Stop using a phone if you notice signs that may indicate battery damage. The U.S. Fire Administration advises stopping use of lithium-ion batteries if they have an odor, color change, excessive heat, changed shape, leakage, or odd noises. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also warns against using or charging a device when its battery is smoking, extremely hot, swollen or leaking, or making hissing or cracking sounds.

- Extreme or unusual heat: especially if the phone is too hot to touch comfortably.
- Swelling or a changed shape: such as a bulge, lump, or case or screen that appears pushed out of place.
- Leakage, discoloration, or other visible damage.
- An unusual or strong odor.
- Hissing, cracking, or other unusual sounds.
- Smoke.
A phone does not need to show every sign for the situation to be serious, and ordinary warmth by itself does not establish that the battery is failing. If the device is swollen or damaged, do not press, puncture, open, or attempt to repair it. What to do if the phone is hot but shows no damage signs
- Disconnect it from power if it is charging.
- Move it to a cooler place and stop using it while it cools.
- Wait for it to cool before using it again. Google recommends these steps for a hot Pixel; for another model, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not keep running demanding apps or features while the phone cools. If it repeatedly gets too hot or shuts down, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming the cause from warmth alone.

What to do if you suspect battery damage
- Stop using and charging the phone. This applies if you see swelling, leakage, extreme heat, an unusual odor or sound, smoke, or other damage.
- Contact the manufacturer for advice on safe handling and repair. Google advises seeking professional help unless you have suitable technical experience; opening or repairing a Pixel can create fire, injury, and device-damage risks. See its Pixel 10 safety and regulatory guide.
- If there is smoke or fire, move away and follow local emergency-service guidance. This is an emergency, not a routine troubleshooting situation; emergency numbers differ by country. The U.S. Fire Administration advises getting out quickly in a lithium-ion battery fire.
How to reduce heat and follow model-specific limits
For Pixel phones, Google advises keeping the device out of direct sunlight and hot vehicles, avoiding enclosed or poorly ventilated places, and stopping demanding apps or features while it cools. These steps help with heat but do not make a damaged battery safe.
Temperature limits are model-specific. Google’s Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL safety guide says not to use or charge those models at ambient temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 35°C (95°F). The guide also describes reduced performance or connectivity, inability to charge, and display or device shutdown while the phone regulates its temperature. Do not apply that range to other smartphones: check the operating guidance for your exact model.
