Refresh rate is the number of times a phone display redraws its image each second. A 60Hz screen refreshes 60 times per second, 90Hz refreshes 90 times, and 120Hz refreshes 120 times. Higher rates can make scrolling, animations and supported games look smoother, but they do not create extra game frames by themselves and can increase display power use and heat.

For most buyers, 60Hz is adequate for static content and 60fps games, 90Hz is a noticeable everyday smoothness upgrade, and 120Hz is most useful when the phone and apps can sustain high frame rates or when you watch 24-frame-per-second video. Adaptive systems may change the active rate automatically instead of running at the advertised maximum all the time.

What a phone refresh rate actually measures

Refresh rate, expressed in hertz (Hz), describes how quickly the display hardware can show a new image. The number is a display capability: it is separate from the number of frames a game, video player or operating system produces.

The interval between refreshes gets shorter as the rate rises. Android Developers gives the following timing examples:

Refresh rate Refreshes each second Time per refresh What it means in practice
60Hz 60 About 16.6 milliseconds Baseline timing for ordinary video, scrolling and games capped at 60fps
90Hz 90 About 11.1 milliseconds More frequent updates for smoother interface motion
120Hz 120 About 8.3 milliseconds Very smooth interface motion and useful timing multiples for some video

The 60Hz and 90Hz intervals are published in the Android Developers guidance. The 120Hz interval is the same calculation: 1,000 milliseconds divided by 120, so it is a derived figure rather than a separately published measurement.

Frame rate, usually written as frames per second (fps), is the rate at which software produces frames. A 60fps game can supply at most 60 new game images each second even if the phone is set to 120Hz. The display may refresh between those frames, but it cannot invent the missing game images.

60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz compared

60Hz: efficient and sufficient for many phones

At 60Hz, the display has about 16.6ms for each refresh. This remains suitable for reading, messaging, photographs, ordinary streaming video and games that target 30 or 60fps. It generally represents the lowest display power demand among these three settings, although actual battery life also depends on brightness, radios, processor load, software and temperature.

90Hz: the balanced everyday step up

90Hz shortens the refresh interval to about 11.1ms. Scrolling through a web page or settings list can look visibly smoother than at 60Hz, and animations have more opportunities to update. Because it asks for fewer updates than a constant 120Hz mode, it can be a compromise between fluidity and power use. The benefit appears only when the operating system and app can produce frames quickly enough to use those refresh opportunities.

120Hz: smoothest of the three for supported content

120Hz refreshes every 8.3ms. That can make rapid scrolling and system animations look the smoothest of these common options. It also gives compatible games a display cadence for frame rates above 60fps and provides a clean multiple for 24fps film content. The trade-off is potential extra display power consumption and heat, particularly if the phone holds 120Hz during demanding work.

Beyond 120Hz

144Hz and higher modes are specialist features aimed primarily at gaming. A higher advertised number is useful only if the panel, operating system, game and thermal system can sustain it. The available Android guidance does not establish one universal smoothness gain or battery penalty that applies to every phone above 120Hz, so evaluate those models by their supported games and sustained performance rather than the peak figure alone.

Why a higher refresh rate does not automatically mean more fps

The display and the renderer have to work together. Android notes that games commonly target 30 or 60fps. If the display is running faster than the game’s target, there is no benefit from the higher refresh rate for that game, while power consumption can increase.

A 120Hz panel therefore does not turn a 30fps or 60fps title into a 120fps title. To benefit from 120Hz in a game, the game must offer a higher frame-rate mode and the phone must render those frames consistently. Even then, frame pacing matters: uneven delivery can look less smooth than a lower but steady rate.

Higher display rates can still provide more presentation choices when a game cannot sustain 60fps. Android’s engineering guidance explains that a 90Hz or 120Hz display offers additional intermediate rates, but asking the processor and graphics hardware to render more often leaves less time to complete each frame. At 90Hz, an application has about 11.1ms per frame instead of 16.6ms at 60Hz; at 120Hz, the derived interval is about 8.3ms.

Do you need 120Hz for gaming?

You need 120Hz only when your games support frame rates above 60fps and your phone can sustain them without frequent thermal or power reductions. For a library capped at 30 or 60fps, selecting 120Hz does not add game frames.

Check the game’s actual frame-rate options

  • Look in the game’s graphics or performance menu for a 90fps, 120fps or similar option.
  • Confirm that the option is available on your specific phone model, not merely on the game in general.
  • Check whether higher graphics quality disables the high-frame-rate mode.

Check sustained performance, not the opening minute

A phone can begin at a high frame rate and then reduce performance as temperature rises or battery falls. Android’s current game guidance says Android 15 defaults games to 60Hz for power efficiency, and battery level or temperature can override a game’s higher request. That means a 120Hz setting is not a guarantee that a game will remain at 120fps during a long session.

Choose the mode that matches your priority

  • Choose 60Hz when battery endurance and lower heat matter more than motion smoothness, or when your games are capped at 60fps.
  • Choose 90Hz when you want smoother interface motion while avoiding a constant 120Hz target.
  • Choose 120Hz when you play a supported high-frame-rate title and accept the possibility of higher power use.

Is 120Hz worth it for watching movies?

It can be useful for 24fps film and television content. One second of 24fps video contains 24 frames, and 120 refreshes divide evenly into 24. A display can show each video frame for the same number of refresh intervals, avoiding the uneven 3:2 pulldown pattern used when 24fps content is mapped to 60Hz. Uneven cadence is perceived as judder during camera pans.

This does not mean every streaming app or video automatically runs at 120Hz. Android’s display documentation describes an app requesting 24Hz as a case that may cause a device to switch from 60Hz to 120Hz; the system scheduler makes the final mode decision. The phone may stay at another rate depending on the app, content, battery state and temperature.

For 30fps or 60fps video, 60Hz already provides an even relationship. A 120Hz panel does not improve the underlying video resolution, color, brightness or compression, so those specifications may matter more for movie quality than the maximum refresh number.

How adaptive and variable refresh works

Many current phones do not operate at one fixed rate. An adaptive system changes modes according to the content on screen, app requests, battery state and temperature. A static page may use a lower rate, while scrolling or an eligible game can request a higher one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android says the platform considers multiple factors and does not guarantee that an app’s requested rate will be granted. The scheduler can choose a different mode to meet power or thermal limits. This is why two phones advertised as “120Hz” can behave differently in the same application.

Google’s Pixel specifications describe Smooth Display as a 60–120Hz range. Samsung documents a Standard mode at 60Hz and Galaxy models that support up to 120Hz. These examples show why you should examine both the minimum and maximum rates and whether the panel is adaptive, rather than treating the maximum as a permanent operating speed.

Battery Saver can restrict refresh to 60Hz or lower according to Android Open Source Project documentation. A phone may also lower the active rate when it is hot or when the battery is low, even if a high-refresh option remains selected in settings.

Does 120Hz drain the battery?

Higher refresh rates can increase display-panel power consumption, and Android and Samsung both warn that they can affect battery life. There is no universal percentage or number of hours that applies to every phone. Brightness, panel technology, screen-on time, processor workload, network activity, game frame rate and temperature all change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The biggest difference usually appears when a phone holds a high rate during content that does not need it. Adaptive refresh can reduce unnecessary updates, while a fixed 120Hz mode may keep the display working harder during reading or static pages. Conversely, a game that genuinely renders at 120fps is doing more graphics work as well as refreshing the panel more often.

Ways to control the trade-off

  • Use the phone’s adaptive or automatic refresh option when you want the system to balance smoothness and endurance.
  • Use a 60Hz or standard mode on long travel days, during extended gaming or whenever heat is uncomfortable.
  • Keep Battery Saver behavior in mind: it may force 60Hz or lower and can make a high-refresh phone feel different until the mode is disabled.
  • Do not judge battery cost from the refresh number alone; compare like-for-like brightness, apps and network conditions.

What to compare when buying a phone

Use the following checklist instead of choosing solely by the largest Hertz number:

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it matters
Refresh range What are the minimum and maximum rates? A “120Hz” label may still spend much of the day at a lower mode.
Adaptive behavior Does the system change rates automatically, and can you select a fixed mode? Automatic scheduling affects both smoothness and endurance.
Game support Which games offer 90fps or 120fps on this model? The display cannot add frames that the game does not render.
Thermal behavior Does the phone reduce performance or refresh rate as it heats? Sustained play can differ from a short demonstration.
Battery priorities How much screen-on time do you need, and is a lower-rate mode available? Higher refresh can raise display and graphics power demand.
Panel quality How are brightness, contrast, viewing angles and motion response? Refresh rate alone does not determine overall display quality.
Price Is the higher-rate panel worth the cost for your apps and games? A 120Hz premium has little value if your content is capped at 60fps.

When a phone advertised as 120Hz does not look like 120Hz

The active mode may have changed

Open the display settings and check whether the phone is in Standard, Battery Saver or another mode that limits refresh. Temperature and battery level can also trigger an automatic reduction.

The app may request a lower rate

Some apps and games target 30 or 60fps, and Android can decline a higher request. Test scrolling in system menus as well as inside the app; smooth system motion with a lower-rate app usually indicates scheduling rather than a defective panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The renderer may not keep up

If motion is inconsistent, reduce game graphics quality, close background workloads and allow the phone to cool. A stable 60fps presentation can look better than a fluctuating attempt at 120fps.

Video cadence may be the limiting factor

A 24fps movie can benefit from a 120Hz cadence, but the streaming app and system scheduler must support that path. A 120Hz specification does not force every service to switch modes.

Bottom line for choosing 60Hz, 90Hz or 120Hz

Choose based on the content you actually use. Pick 60Hz for efficiency and 30/60fps workloads, 90Hz for a balanced everyday upgrade, and 120Hz for the smoothest interface motion, supported high-frame-rate gaming or cleaner 24fps video cadence. Treat the advertised maximum as a capability, not a promise: the operating system, app frame rate, battery state and temperature determine what the display is doing at any moment.
