Putting a phone into recovery mode opens a maintenance environment; it does not, by itself, mean the phone has been erased. Data loss depends on the action you choose next: Android’s Wipe data/factory reset erases phone data, while an iPhone’s Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data. What recovery mode does
Recovery mode is a separate maintenance environment used for tasks such as installing updates or wiping user data. Its menu and behavior depend on the phone’s operating system and, on Android, the device implementation. Android’s recovery components support update and wipe operations, but there is no single menu that appears on every Android phone. What happens on Android
Android recovery may offer several maintenance choices, and the labels and button sequence can vary by manufacturer and model. Google’s factory-reset guidance recommends checking the device maker’s instructions for model-specific steps rather than assuming one button combination works for every phone. Google’s Android Help also advises trying other troubleshooting options before a factory reset.

Entering recovery is not the reset
Opening the recovery menu is different from selecting Wipe data/factory reset. The reset choice is the destructive operation. Google says a factory reset erases all data from the phone; Android.com’s reset instructions describe a recovery-menu route, but that route should not be treated as universal across Android devices.
Before selecting Wipe data/factory reset
Warning: Selecting Wipe data/factory reset erases the phone’s data. Back up anything you can access before proceeding, and make sure you know the Google Account credentials associated with the device; Google says those credentials may be needed during setup after the reset. If the phone still works well enough to troubleshoot, try other options first.

What happens on iPhone
Apple’s recovery workflow requires connecting the iPhone to a computer. Use Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on a PC, then follow the computer’s prompts. The exact button sequence for opening recovery mode varies across iPhone generations, so follow Apple’s instructions for your model rather than using a sequence intended for another generation. Update versus Restore
When the computer offers Update or Restore, the choice matters. Apple recommends trying Update first if you have not already tried it. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone, as Apple Support states in If you can’t update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch.

When recovery mode is not enough
Recovery mode is not a guarantee that a phone can be repaired in software. Apple advises seeking service if the iPhone cannot be updated or restored through recovery, or if a required button is broken or stuck. For Android, consult the phone’s manufacturer for device-specific support; the cited Google guidance does not establish a single repair escalation route for all Android models.
