If people hear you poorly on calls or your recordings sound muffled, first check whether a case, film, or debris is blocking the microphone opening. Power the phone off, identify the opening for your exact model, and use only a cleaning method its manufacturer allows. Never probe the hole with a pin or let liquid enter it. Cleaning can help when an obstruction is the cause, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Find the microphone before you clean
Microphone locations vary by phone, and some models have several microphones that handle different tasks. A tiny hole may also serve another purpose, so do not identify it by appearance alone. Check the hardware diagram or user guide for your exact model. Google says Pixel phones have three microphones and that which microphone is used can vary by task and app: Pixel speakers and microphones.
Remove anything that may be blocking it
Take off the case and inspect any film, vinyl, adhesive, or other accessory that might overlap the microphone opening. Samsung identifies covers and protective vinyl as possible causes of microphone obstruction. If calls or recordings improve with an accessory removed, check that accessory’s fit before cleaning the phone.
Clean cautiously, following your phone maker’s guidance
- Power off and disconnect the phone. Google instructs Pixel owners to turn off and unplug the phone before cleaning. See Google’s Pixel cleaning guidance.
- Inspect the identified opening in good light. Do not insert a pin, needle, toothpick, or other sharp object, and do not press debris into the opening. Samsung warns that sharp objects can damage the microphone and advises against excessive pressure.
- Use only an approved method for the exact model. Samsung India’s Galaxy guidance says: “Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean the microphone port. Avoid sharp objects that could damage the microphone.” This applies to Galaxy devices covered by that guidance, not phones universally. Google advises against spraying compressed air at a Pixel, and Apple says not to use compressed air on an iPhone. Check the current instructions for your model and market before using any tool.
- Keep moisture and liquid cleaners away from the opening. Guidance for wiping a phone’s exterior does not mean it is safe to wet the microphone opening. Google and Apple both warn against moisture entering openings.
The recommendations differ: Samsung India’s Galaxy microphone article was last updated November 19, 2025, while Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance warns against cans of compressed air when cleaning or drying a Galaxy device. Google and Apple also caution against compressed air for their phones. Because manufacturer, region, and context matter, there is no universally approved compressed-air method.

Test whether the sound has improved
After checking for obstructions and cleaning only as permitted, make a short recording and play it back. Samsung suggests testing with Voice Recorder or Camera. Disconnect or disable connected audio accessories if appropriate, since sound may be routed through another device. Test with the same app or activity that exposed the problem, as phones may use different microphones for different tasks.
When to run diagnostics or seek service
If the sound remains muffled, use the manufacturer’s diagnostic options rather than trying to clear the opening more aggressively. Samsung recommends the microphone test in its Members app and advises seeking service if a diagnostic detects an issue. If the problem persists after checking accessories and the opening, contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider. Do not force debris deeper in an attempt to fix a suspected internal blockage.

What cleaning can—and cannot—tell you
Cleaning is a troubleshooting step when an obstruction is present; it cannot establish by itself that the microphone is healthy, and it will not fix every cause of poor audio. The official guidance cited here does not establish a routine cleaning interval or quantify an improvement in sound quality. If there is no visible obstruction, avoid repeated or invasive cleaning and use diagnostics or service support instead.
