Yes, someone may be able to locate you through your phone—but usually through a specific route such as location sharing, access to your account or device, an app with location permission, carrier-held data, or a Bluetooth tracker traveling with you. Knowing your phone number alone is not shown by the official guidance cited here to give an ordinary person access to your live location.
How could someone find your location?
“Phone tracking” can mean several different things. Some routes expose a live or recent location; others involve network-derived estimates or records already collected and shared. The precision and availability depend on the service, device, settings, network, account access, and jurisdiction.
- Location sharing: You may have chosen to share your location with another person through a platform feature.
- Account or device access: Someone who can use your unlocked phone, account, or another signed-in device may see location information or change settings.
- App access: An app with location permission may access location under the conditions you allowed.
- Carrier or data-broker records: Location may be derived from network activity or collected by a service and later disclosed.
- Physical tracker: A compatible Bluetooth item tracker hidden in or on something you carry may report its own location.
These pathways are separate. Turning off one setting does not necessarily block the others.

Can someone track you just from your phone number?
The official sources cited in this article describe location sharing, account access, apps, carrier data, and physical trackers; they do not establish that an ordinary person can see a phone’s live location simply by knowing its number. A phone number may be associated with accounts or services, so review who can access those accounts and devices rather than treating the number itself as proof that tracking is happening.

Check location sharing with people
On an iPhone
Apple’s Find My location sharing comes from the device designated as the location source. Review who can see that location and which device is sharing it using Apple’s Find My location-sharing guide.
Apple Safety Check can help review sharing and access, stop location sharing with people in Find My, reset app privacy permissions, and restrict some access to the device. Apple notes that Safety Check does not cover every route: passwords and accounts, social-media sharing, or information shared from another device may need separate review. See the Safety Check guide.

In a Google account
Google Location Sharing is off by default and tied to each account and device. A person you selected may see real-time location and other details, such as battery status; some services may also show recent places or an address. Check every Google account and device you use, and consider relevant settings in Maps, Messages, Find Hub, Family Link, or Personal Safety. Google explains the controls in its Location Sharing settings guide.
Review apps that can access location
On Android, app location access can be set to allow access all the time, only while the app is in use, or not at all. You can also control whether the app receives precise location. Review the permissions on your device and remove access an app does not need; Google’s Pixel location-settings guide describes location controls and notes an emergency-location caveat.

Google’s app data-sharing disclosures may be supplied by app developers and are not available for every app or store. Treat them as a clue, not an independent audit. Permission changes limit future access through the app, but do not by themselves erase information the app or another party already collected or shared. Consider account access and hidden monitoring
Someone with access to your account, an unlocked phone, or another signed-in device may see information that is not controlled by the phone’s visible location toggle. Stalkerware is software installed without your knowledge that can be concealed. Unusual battery drain or data use alone is not definitive evidence of it. If a partner or another person may be monitoring you coercively, prioritize safety over making a quick settings change. The FTC advises against contacting an advocate or law enforcement from a device that may be monitored. Use a safer device if possible, and seek safety-planning advice before removing apps, resetting the phone, or changing passwords; those actions could alert someone watching the device.

What carriers and data brokers may know
Mobile carriers can derive network location from the cell sites a connected device uses. In a US enforcement announcement dated April 29, 2024, the FCC said it fined AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon nearly $200 million for sharing access to customers’ location data without consent and without reasonable safeguards. That is a dated US regulatory action—not proof that every carrier currently shares every customer’s location, or that the same rules apply in every country. The FCC announcement gives the details.

Location records can also pass through apps and data brokers. In an August 2022 consumer alert, the FTC described how precise location data could reveal sensitive visits and patterns. Changing an app permission does not necessarily recall or delete information already collected by a service or broker. Collection, retention, access, and legal remedies vary by service and jurisdiction; see the FTC alert on sensitive location information.
Respond to an unknown Bluetooth tracker alert
Apple and Android offer unwanted-tracker alerts for supported devices and trackers. Apple’s guidance covers AirTags, some AirPods, Find My network accessories, and compatible Bluetooth trackers. Android’s guidance covers compatible Find Hub tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags. Compatibility and configuration affect alerts and manual scans, so no alert does not rule out every kind of tracking.
- Follow the alert on your phone to view the map and identify or locate the item.
- If you find a tracker, use the phone’s instructions and the manufacturer’s directions to disable it, if it is safe to do so.
- If you are worried about your safety, go to a safe public place and contact a trusted person or local authorities. Preserve information about the alert or item if doing so is safe.
Turning off Bluetooth, Location Services, or airplane mode on your phone does not disable an external tracker. Apple says those phone settings do not stop an AirTag or Find My accessory owner from seeing that accessory’s location; Android gives the same practical warning. Use the Apple unwanted-tracking guidance or Android unknown-tracker guidance for supported alerts and next steps. Apple says of these tracker products: “They should not be used to track people, and should not be used to track property that does not belong to you.” That is Apple’s product guidance, not a comprehensive legal rule for every jurisdiction.
