Choose Phone Link if your computer runs Windows and you mainly want integrated texts, calls, notifications, recent photos, and selected Android apps. Choose KDE Connect if you need the same companion idea across Linux, Windows, or macOS, or if clipboard sharing, file access, remote-control actions, and finding your phone matter more than Windows-specific integration.
The right choice depends first on the computer operating system, then on the tasks you want to perform. Neither app exposes an identical feature set on every Android model or desktop platform, so treat device eligibility and current version requirements as part of the decision.
Phone Link vs. KDE Connect at a glance
| What you need | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Windows integration for text messages, calls, notifications, recent photos, and selected phone apps | Phone Link | Microsoft explicitly describes these functions for its Windows PC experience. Availability still depends on the Android device and feature. |
| A companion that can run with Linux, Windows, or macOS | KDE Connect | KDE lists all three desktop operating systems, as well as Android and iOS mobile clients. Individual features can vary by platform. |
| Clipboard sharing, file access, remote control, or finding a phone | KDE Connect | These are among KDE’s named feature highlights. |
| Microsoft’s documented file-transfer routes and selected-device phone-app workflows | Phone Link | Microsoft documents file sharing, device-dependent drag and drop, cross-device copy and paste, and selected app access. |
This is a feature-based recommendation from the vendors’ published descriptions, not a claim about comparative speed, reliability, or ease of use.

Phone Link is Microsoft’s Windows companion for an Android phone. Its central promise is to bring selected phone activity into the PC experience rather than to reproduce the entire handset. Microsoft lists reading and replying to text messages, viewing recent phone photos, using favorite mobile apps, making and receiving calls, and managing phone notifications on a PC.

The word selected is important. Phone Link does not guarantee that every Android application can run in Windows, that every phone file is browsable, or that every device supports every integration. Microsoft identifies device families including Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, and vivo for parts of the pairing and transfer experience, but the supported feature set is model- and version-dependent.
Phone Link’s strongest use case
Phone Link makes the most sense when the PC is already a Windows machine and the main interruption is having to pick up the phone for messages, calls, alerts, or recent pictures. It is also the more natural first choice when you specifically want Microsoft’s Windows settings and file-management integrations.
Windows 11 mobile-device integration
Windows 11 has a separate Mobile Devices settings workflow for linking an Android 10-or-later phone. Microsoft describes options to show a linked device in File Explorer, use its camera as a connected camera, and receive notifications when new photos arrive. Microsoft lists Link to Windows version 1.23112.189 or later for this workflow. These options are a Windows 11 capability, not a universal promise of the standard Phone Link pairing flow; confirm that the settings appear on your particular PC and phone.

KDE Connect is a cross-platform device companion. KDE lists Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows among its supported platforms. Its product description highlights sharing a clipboard, accessing files across devices, using a phone as a computer remote control, finding a phone, and viewing phone notifications on the computer.
That breadth changes the buying question. KDE Connect is not limited to a Windows PC, and it is oriented toward two-way interaction between devices. A Linux laptop user can use the same general companion concept as someone on Windows or macOS. However, a platform list establishes availability, not feature parity: a particular action may be implemented differently or be unavailable on one operating-system combination.

KDE Connect’s strongest use case
Start with KDE Connect when your desktop operating system is Linux or macOS, when you move between different desktop systems, or when your workflow is built around clipboard exchange, file access, remote controls, notifications, and locating the phone.
Requirements and compatibility
| Requirement or capability | Phone Link | KDE Connect |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop operating systems named by the vendor | Windows 10 (with the October 2022 update or later) and Windows 11 are listed in Microsoft’s requirements guidance. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. | Linux, Windows, and macOS are listed by KDE. |
| Mobile platforms named by the vendor | Android 10 or later. | Android and iOS are listed. |
| Account or pairing prerequisites | Pair the PC and Android app, sign in with a Microsoft account, and approve Android permission prompts. | KDE’s platform listing does not establish a single account requirement or identical onboarding process for every platform. |
| Network guidance | Microsoft’s requirements page names a phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network as the baseline. Consumer guidance also describes Wi-Fi, mobile data, or an instant hotspot in some configurations. | The cited KDE description does not establish one universal network requirement for every platform combination. |
| Feature consistency | Pairing, app access, transfers, and camera-related functions depend on the Android model, Windows version, app version, and feature eligibility. | The listed capabilities should not be assumed to work identically on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. |
If you are buying or configuring a new PC in 2026, Windows 11 is the practical target for Phone Link. Microsoft’s page still documents a Windows 10 baseline, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that support status should not be confused with a current security-support recommendation.
Choose by the job you need to do
Messages, calls, and phone notifications
Phone Link is the direct fit for a Windows user who wants to read and reply to text messages, make or receive calls, and manage phone notifications from the PC. Pairing includes Android permission prompts, and denying a permission can remove the corresponding content or action from the PC.
KDE Connect also lists phone notifications on the computer, but the cited product description does not promise the same Windows messaging and calling workflow. If your decision hinges on SMS replies or PC-based calling, verify the exact Android and desktop combination before relying on it.
Running Android apps on the computer
Phone Link is the relevant option when you want access to selected favorite mobile apps through a Windows PC. “Selected” is a device- and integration-dependent qualification, not a promise that the entire Android app library will appear in Windows. Do not choose it on the assumption that every app will mirror or that app behavior will match a native Windows application.

The KDE Connect feature list emphasizes device communication rather than a Windows display of Android applications. It should not be treated as an alternative Android-app mirroring layer based solely on KDE’s platform listing.

KDE Connect specifically highlights sharing a clipboard, making it the clearer starting point for a workflow that repeatedly moves text between phone and computer. Phone Link has a separate cross-device copy-and-paste feature for selected devices. Microsoft’s documented route supports text and images; images above 1 MB are resized, and eligibility depends on the phone and Windows integration.
Files and photos
Both products can be relevant to file movement, but the mechanisms are different. Phone Link and Link to Windows have documented file-sharing routes, including drag and drop for selected devices. Microsoft’s cited drag-and-drop guidance allows up to 100 files in one transfer and limits each file to 512 MB. Those are documented product constraints for eligible configurations, not a universal limit for every Phone Link transfer path.
Phone Link also brings recent phone photos into the PC experience and, on eligible Windows 11 setups, can expose a linked device in File Explorer and notify you about new photos. KDE Connect’s feature description highlights accessing files across devices, which is the more platform-neutral concept, but it does not establish identical file browsing behavior on every desktop.
Remote control and finding the phone
KDE Connect explicitly lists using the phone as a computer remote control and finding a phone. Those features make it the stronger starting point for presentations, media-control-style actions, or locating a misplaced handset within the supported setup.

Phone Link’s published highlights center on communications, notifications, photos, selected apps, and Windows-oriented transfers rather than a general-purpose phone remote control. Do not assume that a Phone Link pairing supplies KDE Connect’s remote-control or find-phone functions.
Using a phone as a camera
Windows 11’s Mobile Devices workflow can offer a linked Android phone’s camera as a connected camera, but Microsoft presents this as a separate Windows 11 capability requiring Android 10 or later and Link to Windows version 1.23112.189 or later. Device eligibility and the appearance of the option must be confirmed on the actual PC. Neither the standard Phone Link description nor KDE’s platform list supports a blanket claim that every Android phone can become a webcam through either app.
How to set up Phone Link
The labels can vary with the phone manufacturer and the installed Link to Windows version, but Microsoft’s ordinary setup follows this sequence:
- Check the baseline. Use a Windows 10 PC with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, and an Android phone running Android 10 or later. For a current Windows installation, remember that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
- Put the devices on a workable connection. The requirements guidance names the same Wi-Fi network for the phone and PC. Microsoft’s consumer guidance also describes Wi-Fi, mobile data, or an instant hotspot for some configurations, so follow the connection instructions shown for your setup rather than assuming one route works everywhere.
- Open Phone Link on Windows. Start the pairing flow and follow the on-screen prompt to connect an Android device.
- Open or install Link to Windows on the phone. Use the Android app associated with the pairing prompt, then sign in with the Microsoft account requested by the setup.
- Approve the Android permissions. Permission prompts control access to messages, contacts, notifications, photos, calls, and other selected content. Grant only the categories you intend to use, but understand that declining one can disable its related Phone Link feature.
- Test the functions you actually need. Send a test message, check notification delivery, open recent photos, and try a call or file operation if those are decision-critical. A successful pairing alone does not prove that every feature is eligible on the phone.
For Windows 11’s additional mobile-device options, open the Windows Mobile Devices settings area after pairing. If the File Explorer, connected-camera, or new-photo notification choices are absent, check the Windows edition, Android version, Link to Windows version, and phone-model eligibility before treating the omission as a setup failure.
Phone Link transfer limits and what they mean
| Transfer route | Documented behavior | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Phone Link and Link to Windows file sharing | Microsoft documents file-sharing workflows between the phone and PC. | The available route depends on the device and software combination. |
| Drag and drop | Up to 100 files per documented transfer; no individual file over 512 MB. | Applies to the cited eligible-device guidance, not every Android phone or every transfer method. |
| Cross-device copy and paste | Supports text and images; images larger than 1 MB are resized. | Available only on selected devices and integrations. |
| File Explorer view in Windows 11 | A linked phone may appear in File Explorer through Mobile Devices settings. | Requires the Windows 11 workflow and a supported setup; it is not a promise of unrestricted access to all phone storage. |
These limits are product constraints from Microsoft’s support guidance, not independent performance measurements. If a transfer fails, first try a smaller batch and a file below the documented size ceiling, then confirm that the phone model supports the route you selected.

How to set up KDE Connect
KDE Connect’s cross-platform design means the exact menus differ between Linux, Windows, and macOS. The general pairing pattern is:
- Install the desktop client for your operating system and the KDE Connect app on the Android phone.
- Open both clients and keep the phone and computer available to one another on the connection used by your setup.
- Select the computer from the phone or the phone from the desktop client when it appears, then send a pairing request.
- Accept the request on the other device. Do not approve an unfamiliar device.
- Enable only the plugins or permissions required for your tasks, such as notifications, clipboard sharing, file access, remote-control actions, or finding the phone.
- Test one action at a time. Copy a short text string, move a small file, and trigger a notification before depending on a more elaborate remote-control setup.
KDE’s published platform list confirms broad availability, not identical behavior. If a plugin is missing or a device does not appear, check that both clients are current, the devices can communicate on the intended network, and the phone’s Android permissions allow the requested action.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The devices do not pair
- For Phone Link, verify Windows and Android versions, sign-in status, the same-Wi-Fi baseline, and the Microsoft account used on both sides.
- For either app, confirm that the desktop and phone clients are open and that the operating-system firewall or network profile is not blocking local device discovery.
- Restart both clients after changing permissions or network connections; a pairing request created before a permission change may need to be sent again.
Pairing works, but messages or notifications are missing
- Review Android notification, contacts, SMS, and call permissions for Link to Windows or KDE Connect, depending on the feature you enabled.
- Check battery-saving or background restrictions on the phone. A companion that cannot run in the background may stop delivering updates.
- In Phone Link, remember that permissions are granular: approving pairing does not automatically grant every content category.
File transfer fails
- With Phone Link drag and drop, try no more than 100 files and keep each file at or below 512 MB for the documented route.
- For copy and paste, expect images above 1 MB to be resized; use a file-sharing route when preserving the original image matters.
- Confirm that the selected Phone Link transfer method is supported by the Android model. A feature shown in Microsoft’s general documentation may still be unavailable on a particular device.
- In KDE Connect, test a small file first and check the file-access permission or plugin before diagnosing a larger transfer as a platform limitation.
A desired feature is absent
- Check whether you are using the standard Phone Link pairing or the separate Windows 11 Mobile Devices workflow.
- Verify the Link to Windows version when using Windows 11 camera, File Explorer, or new-photo options; Microsoft lists version 1.23112.189 or later for that workflow.
- Do not infer support from the phone brand alone. Eligibility can vary by model, Android release, Windows version, and region.
- For KDE Connect, distinguish “the platform is listed” from “this plugin is implemented on that platform.”
Privacy and data considerations
The available product descriptions do not establish a fair, comprehensive privacy ranking between Phone Link and KDE Connect. Microsoft directs users to its privacy statement, while the cited KDE product page describes capabilities rather than a comparable data-flow analysis. Choose permissions deliberately on either platform, remove access you no longer need, and review each vendor’s current privacy and permission documentation before connecting sensitive communications or files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAvoid treating local pairing as proof that no service, account, or operating-system component is involved. Phone Link explicitly uses a Microsoft account in the ordinary setup, and both products rely on the permissions and networking behavior of the phone and desktop operating systems.
A practical decision checklist
- What is your desktop OS? If it is Linux or macOS, start with KDE Connect. If it is Windows, continue to the task question.
- Are texts, calls, notifications, recent photos, or selected Android apps the priority? Start with Phone Link, then verify your model’s eligibility.
- Are clipboard sharing, file access, remote control, or finding the phone the priority? Start with KDE Connect.
- Do you need Windows 11 File Explorer access, a connected phone camera, or new-photo alerts? Check the separate Mobile Devices workflow and the required Link to Windows version before committing to that workflow.
- Do you move large batches or large files? Check the documented Phone Link limits and whether your device supports the route; do not assume a general file browser.
- Do you use more than one desktop operating system? KDE Connect’s listed Linux, Windows, and macOS reach is the stronger starting point, subject to feature support on each platform.
- Are privacy or data-flow differences the deciding factor? The cited official material is insufficient for a categorical winner. Compare the current privacy documentation and grant only the permissions required for your workflow.
Bottom line
Phone Link is the focused choice for a Windows-centered Android experience: texts, calls, notifications, recent photos, selected mobile apps, and Microsoft’s documented transfer and Windows 11 integration options. KDE Connect is the broader cross-platform companion for Linux, Windows, or macOS users who prioritize clipboard and file exchange, notifications, remote controls, and finding the phone. Start with the operating system, narrow the choice by task, and confirm support for the exact Android model and feature before you rely on the pairing.
