Use Phone Link for phone-related tasks; use a remote-desktop app for control of the Windows computer itself. Phone Link handles messages, calls, photos, notifications, device status, file sending and (on supported Android devices) app mirroring. It is not documented as a general Windows power-control tool. Microsoft Remote Desktop provides the Windows desktop, but its consumer host requires Windows Pro and deliberate network and authentication configuration. A cross-platform control tool such as AnyDesk is the better fit when unattended access or a documented remote-restart workflow is the priority.

The important distinction is where the action happens. Phone Link brings selected phone data and phone functions to Windows. Remote desktop brings the Windows session to another device. Those are complementary products, not interchangeable ways to control the same operating system.
What Phone Link can and cannot do
Its documented phone-companion functions
Microsoft describes Phone Link as a connection between a Windows PC and supported Android or iPhone devices. Depending on the phone and feature support, it can display and let you respond to text messages, show recent photos, make and receive calls, surface notifications and expose device information. Newer Windows 11 mobile-device integration also adds status, messages, calls, photos, recent activity and file sending from the Start menu. The Start-menu experience depends on the Windows 11 version and Microsoft’s rollout requirements, so two otherwise similar PCs may not show exactly the same controls.

A message is still sent through the phone’s messaging service, a call still uses the phone, and a photo shown in Phone Link remains a phone photo. Phone Link is therefore useful when your goal is to avoid picking up the handset while working at the PC.

Android Apps is mirroring, not a Windows installation
On supported Android combinations, Phone Link’s Apps feature mirrors apps from the handset. The Android app continues running on the phone while the PC supplies mouse, keyboard, pen or touch input. This is useful for a quick interaction with a phone-only app, but it does not create a native Windows copy of that app.
Compatibility is not universal. Microsoft notes that some apps may not work through the feature, and some scenarios require a touch-capable PC. If an app depends on phone hardware, protected content or an interaction that mirroring cannot reproduce, seeing the app in the Phone Link interface does not guarantee that every control will function.
Phone Link and shutdown, restart or sleep
The current Microsoft documentation reviewed for this comparison does not describe a generally available Phone Link command for shutting down, restarting or putting a Windows PC to sleep. Do not treat a phone-status panel, notification action or Android app mirror as proof that Phone Link can power-manage the host computer.

If a future Phone Link or Windows build adds a power command, verify the exact Windows release and Link to Windows versions before relying on it. A feature appearing in a preview, an OEM utility or a third-party shortcut is not the same as a standard Phone Link capability.
What a remote-desktop app actually controls
Microsoft Remote Desktop
Microsoft defines Remote Desktop as a way to connect from Windows, Android or iOS to a Windows PC and use its applications, files and desktop as though you were sitting at that machine. That full-session model is the decisive difference from Phone Link: you are operating Windows, not merely viewing selected phone functions.
For the consumer remote-PC workflow, the host computer must run a supported Windows Pro edition. The connecting device can run another supported operating system, including Windows, Android or iOS. A Windows Home computer can still be a client, but Microsoft’s documented consumer host requirement means it cannot serve as the host for this built-in workflow.

Remote Desktop is an administration decision
Microsoft’s setup guidance warns that enabling Remote Desktop opens a port and makes the computer accessible to devices on the local network. The setup also covers Network Level Authentication (NLA) and limiting which users are allowed to connect. Those are security controls, not optional decoration.

- Confirm the host edition before attempting configuration; the Pro requirement is a prerequisite, not a setting that can be enabled on Home.
- Enable Remote Desktop only on the computer you intend to reach.
- Keep NLA enabled when your environment supports it, so authentication is required before a full session is established.
- Review the list of permitted users and remove accounts that do not need remote access.
- Remember that enabling the service changes the machine’s network exposure; treat it as an administrative change and review it when the need ends.
Once connected, the remote user receives the Windows desktop and can open programs, work with files and perform ordinary administration available to that account. The exact power options visible in Windows can be affected by account permissions, organizational policy and the state of the computer.
AnyDesk and similar full-control tools
AnyDesk documents a broader cross-platform remote-control model. Its documented features include unattended access, file transfer, clipboard sharing and session recording. Its unattended-access workflow uses a password so a person does not have to approve every connection at the remote keyboard. Its Remote Restart documentation covers restarting the remote device during a session.
This model is useful when the computer may be unattended, when the host is not a suitable Windows Pro machine for Microsoft’s built-in host, or when you need a documented restart function rather than only a desktop view. Check the current supported platforms, account requirements and licensing terms before deploying any remote-control product; those details can change independently of the basic feature set.
Choose by the task you perform
You only want phone information at your desk
Choose Phone Link when your requirement is to read and answer messages, handle calls, see recent phone photos, review notifications or send files between the phone and PC. It keeps the workflow centered on the handset and avoids configuring a remote Windows host.
You need to launch Windows software or edit PC files
Choose a remote-desktop solution. Phone Link’s Android Apps feature cannot substitute for a Windows desktop session: the app remains on Android, and Phone Link does not expose arbitrary Windows programs, folders or administrative controls.

You want a phone app, not the Windows machine
Phone Link Apps can be the right compromise when the app is supported and you want keyboard, mouse, pen or touch input from the PC. Check whether the particular app works and whether your PC needs touch support. If the app fails to mirror, a remote desktop will not fix the Android app itself; it solves a different problem.
You need a remote restart
For Microsoft’s Remote Desktop, full desktop access means the connected user can use the Windows session’s available administration controls, subject to permissions and policy. AnyDesk explicitly documents a remote-restart procedure. Phone Link should not be selected for this requirement because a standard shutdown, restart or sleep command is not documented for it.
You need unattended access
Use a tool that explicitly supports unattended access. AnyDesk’s documented method protects unattended control with a password. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop can be configured for authorized users, but you must meet the Windows Pro host requirement and manage the service and network exposure yourself.
Setting up Phone Link for its intended use
Check compatibility first
- The PC must run Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11.
- Android use requires Android 10 or later.
- The phone and PC need a network connection so they can maintain the companion link.
- iPhone support exists, but the available functions are determined by the supported phone and Windows combination; do not assume Android feature parity.
Pair the phone and PC
- Open Phone Link on the Windows PC and select the phone type you are connecting.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown by Phone Link and its companion phone experience.
- Grant only the phone permissions needed for the features you intend to use, such as messages, calls, photos or notifications.
- Test one feature at a time: send a test message, view a recent photo or check notifications before depending on the connection for work.
- If Android Apps is your goal, open the Apps area and test the specific app. Confirm that input works and that the app does not require an unsupported phone capability.
Feature availability can vary by phone model, Windows release and rollout status. A successful pairing proves that the devices can communicate; it does not prove that every Phone Link feature is available.
Setting up Microsoft’s Remote Desktop host safely
Verify the host edition and role
- On the computer you want to reach, confirm that the Windows edition is a supported Pro edition for the consumer Remote Desktop host workflow.
- Use a Windows, Android or iOS device as the client, according to Microsoft’s supported-client guidance.
- Decide which user accounts genuinely need remote access before enabling the service.
Enable and restrict the service
- Open the Windows Remote Desktop settings on the host and enable Remote Desktop.
- Review the warning that enabling it opens a port and exposes the PC to devices on the local network.
- Keep Network Level Authentication enabled where supported.
- Use the user-selection controls to limit access to the accounts that require it.
- Connect from the client and verify that you can open the required program or file without granting broader access than intended.
Do not enable the host casually on a shared or unmanaged computer. When the task is complete, review whether the service is still required and remove unnecessary authorized users. Remote Desktop is powerful precisely because it delivers the whole Windows session; the same breadth increases the impact of a compromised account.
Using unattended remote control and remote restart
Prepare the unattended host
Install and configure the chosen full-control application on the computer that must be reachable. In AnyDesk’s documented workflow, unattended access is protected by a password, allowing a connection when nobody is present to approve it. Use a unique credential that is not reused for Windows or other services, and store it where the authorized operators can retrieve it securely.

Test before leaving the computer unattended
- Connect from the phone or other client while someone is still available at the host.
- Transfer a harmless test file or copy sample text to confirm the features you actually need.
- Disconnect and reconnect using the unattended-access path, confirming that the password prompt and account permissions behave as expected.
- Use the documented remote-restart action during a maintenance window, then reconnect after the computer has restarted.
- Record which users are authorized and remove unattended access when the maintenance period ends.
Session recording, clipboard sharing and file transfer are useful operational features, but each can carry sensitive data. Enable them only when they serve a clear purpose and align with your organization’s policy.

“Phone Link is connected, but I cannot restart the PC.”
This is expected if you are relying on standard Phone Link behavior. The documented feature set covers phone integration, not a general Windows shutdown, restart or sleep command. Use a full remote-control method instead.
“Remote Desktop will not let me host from this PC.”
Check the Windows edition first. Microsoft’s consumer host requirement is Windows Pro. If the computer runs Home, choose a remote-control product that supports that host or use the PC locally; do not assume a client installation changes the host edition.
“I can connect, but the Android app does not work through Phone Link.”
Some Android apps are unsupported, and some require a touch-capable PC. Test another supported app and check whether the failure is specific to that app rather than to the phone-to-PC connection.
“The remote user can see the computer but cannot perform an administrative action.”
Review the account used for the session and any Windows or organizational policy that limits the action. Remote access does not automatically grant administrator rights. For restart operations, use the remote-control product’s documented restart workflow and ensure the account is authorized.
“Unattended access stops at an approval prompt.”
An unattended workflow must be configured before the operator leaves the host. Confirm that the password-protected unattended-access setting is enabled and test it from a separate client. If the product was configured only for attended sessions, someone at the host may still be required to approve the connection.

Security and privacy trade-offs
Phone Link
Phone Link exposes selected phone content and controls through a companion connection. Its narrower scope can reduce setup and exposure when you only need messages, calls, photos or notifications. Still, review which permissions you granted and disconnect or remove the pairing on a shared PC.
Microsoft Remote Desktop
Remote Desktop exposes a full Windows session and opens a port for local-network access. Use NLA, restrict users and treat the configuration as a managed service. A full desktop session can reveal files, browser sessions and applications that Phone Link never exposes.
Unattended-control software
Unattended access is convenient for maintenance but removes the requirement that someone approve each connection. Protect it with a strong, unique password, restrict the authorized operators and review file transfer, clipboard and recording settings. Verify current platform and licensing details before standardizing on a product.

- Choose Phone Link if the required outcome is messages, calls, photos, notifications, phone status, file sending or supported Android app mirroring.
- Choose Microsoft Remote Desktop if you have a supported Windows Pro host and need the Windows desktop, programs and files.
- Choose a full-control tool such as AnyDesk if unattended access or an explicitly documented remote-restart workflow is central to the job.
- Do not select Phone Link on the assumption that it can power off, restart or sleep the PC.
- Before enabling any remote-desktop host, identify the users, authentication method and network exposure you are accepting.
- Test the exact phone, Windows edition, app and account combination before relying on it during travel or an outage.
Bottom line: companion link or full remote control?
Phone Link is the lower-complexity choice when the computer is mainly a window onto your phone. It keeps messages, calls, photos, notifications and selected Android apps nearby, but Microsoft does not document it as a Windows power-control or full-desktop tool.
Use Microsoft Remote Desktop when you need the Windows desktop itself and can meet the Windows Pro host requirement. Enable it with NLA and a deliberately limited user list because the service changes network exposure. Use a cross-platform full-control tool such as AnyDesk when unattended operation and documented remote restart matter more than keeping the setup inside Windows. The right choice follows the action you need to perform, not the device you happen to hold.
