If your Bluetooth headset is silent only during calls handled by Phone Link, it may not be muted or broken: Microsoft says Phone Link does not currently support relaying an Android phone call to a Bluetooth headset over Bluetooth. If the headset is also silent in music, videos, or other PC apps, troubleshoot Windows audio and Bluetooth separately.
First, find out whether the problem is limited to Phone Link
Play audio from another Windows app, such as a video or music player, and try another calling app if available. The result points to the right troubleshooting path:
- Only Phone Link calls are silent: start with Phone Link’s documented call-routing limitation below.
- Other Windows apps are silent too: check Windows’ selected output device, volume, pairing, Bluetooth, and drivers.
- Playback works but sounds worse while the headset microphone is active: that may reflect Bluetooth audio profiles, not a mute.
Why a Bluetooth headset may not carry a Phone Link call
Microsoft’s Phone Link call troubleshooting page states: “The Phone Link does not currently support relaying a phone call from your Android device to a headset over Bluetooth.” This describes calls relayed from an Android phone through Phone Link; changing Windows’ output device or replacing the headset should not be treated as a way to bypass that limitation.

Check Phone Link call settings and call quality
- If call notifications are silenced, check Do Not Disturb. Microsoft lists Do Not Disturb as a cause of silenced call notifications.
- Restart the PC, then close and reopen Phone Link if the call issue continues. These are Microsoft’s general troubleshooting checks, not a fix for unsupported Bluetooth call routing.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth accessories to see whether call quality improves. Microsoft notes that other accessories, such as a mouse, may interfere with call quality.
- For bad echo, consider a wired headset. Microsoft suggests this for echo; it is not a guaranteed remedy for a Bluetooth headset that does not receive Phone Link call audio.
Troubleshoot a headset that is silent across Windows apps
For general Bluetooth audio problems, Microsoft recommends the following Windows checks. Menu labels can vary by Windows release.

- Run the automated troubleshooter: open Get Help and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Choose the headset as the output: go to Settings > System > Sound > Output, select the Bluetooth headset, and check system volume.
- Remove and pair the headset again if it appears connected but still produces no sound.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then test audio again.
- Check for current Bluetooth drivers and install an available update for your PC’s Bluetooth hardware.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound guidance covers these checks for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Why audio quality can change when the microphone is in use
Bluetooth Classic uses different profiles for different audio tasks. Microsoft describes A2DP as stereo playback and HFP as mono playback with microphone capture in its Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation. When an app uses the headset microphone during a call, playback quality may change as the hands-free path is used. That quality trade-off does not establish that the headset is muted, nor does it solve Phone Link’s call-routing limitation.
