You can turn an iPhone or Android phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot using its built-in settings; a separate app is not needed for the standard setup. The hotspot shares your phone’s cellular connection, and your carrier plan and device determine whether it is available and what it costs.
What a phone hotspot does
A hotspot lets another device—such as a laptop or tablet—connect to the internet through your phone’s mobile data. You can usually connect over Wi-Fi; Bluetooth and a USB cable are alternatives where the phone and connecting device support them.
This is not the same as repeating a Wi-Fi network your phone is already connected to. Apple says iPhone Personal Hotspot shares cellular internet, not a Wi-Fi connection received by the iPhone. Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide explains the iPhone limitation.
Check carrier support before connecting
Hotspot availability, tethering limits, fees, and data allowances depend on your carrier and plan. Apple says, “Personal Hotspot isn’t available with all carriers. Additional fees may apply.” Google similarly warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Check your plan directly with your carrier rather than assuming that mobile data service includes hotspot use.

If Personal Hotspot is missing on an iPhone while Cellular Data is on, Apple advises contacting the carrier to add the feature to the plan. Android hotspot controls and options can also depend on the phone and carrier.
Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot. If it is not listed, check the Cellular settings route shown on your iPhone.
- Set or review the Wi-Fi password, then turn on Allow Others to Join.
- On the device you want to connect, open its Wi-Fi settings, choose your iPhone’s hotspot name, and enter the password.
You can also connect by Bluetooth or cable when the devices support that method. Apple’s instructions for sharing an iPhone’s internet connection cover available connection methods. For connecting another Apple device, Apple’s Personal Hotspot connection guide describes the process. Nearby devices on the same Apple Account or in Family Sharing may use Instant Hotspot, subject to Apple’s setup requirements.

Turn on a Wi-Fi hotspot on Android
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot. If the tile is not visible, swipe down again or open the phone’s Settings and look for hotspot or hotspot and tethering controls.
- Open hotspot settings to view or change the network name and password.
- On the other device, open Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot network, and enter its password.
Android also supports Bluetooth and USB tethering on compatible devices. Google notes that Mac computers cannot tether to an Android phone over USB using its documented setup. See Google’s Android hotspot and tethering instructions for platform-specific steps.

Choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB
| Method | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Connecting a laptop, tablet, or other nearby device wirelessly. | Use the hotspot name and password; available device limits vary. |
| Bluetooth | A wireless alternative when both devices support Bluetooth tethering. | Pairing and setup differ by phone and connecting device. |
| USB or cable | A wired connection to a compatible computer. | Use a compatible phone-to-computer cable and verify computer support. Google’s documented Android setup does not support USB tethering to Mac computers. |
Wi-Fi is often the most direct option for multiple devices, while cable tethering can be useful when a wired connection is preferable. The right choice depends on device compatibility and the ports or wireless features available.

How many devices can connect?
Google’s Android Help says an Android phone can share a Wi-Fi hotspot with up to 10 devices. This is Google’s general guidance, not a guarantee for every Android model or carrier. Apple says the number of devices that can join an iPhone hotspot depends on the carrier and iPhone model, so there is no single Apple limit to apply universally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you install a hotspot app?
For ordinary cellular sharing, start with the built-in iPhone or Android feature. Apple and Google document setup through system settings; a separate app is not required for that basic task.

An app should not be treated as a way to bypass carrier restrictions or enable a feature that the plan or phone does not support. Android’s available hotspot controls depend on device capabilities, and some Soft AP APIs are restricted to the system. Apple’s documented joinOnce API configures a device to join a Wi-Fi hotspot; it does not establish that third-party apps can replace iPhone Settings to create and manage cellular Personal Hotspot.

Protect your data and battery
- Use a password for the Wi-Fi hotspot and change it if you need to prevent previously connected devices from rejoining.
- Keep an eye on mobile-data use: connected devices use the phone’s cellular connection, and background downloads or updates can consume data.
- Plug the phone in during longer tethering sessions if convenient. Google recommends charging while tethering, turning tethering off when finished, and enabling automatic hotspot shutoff when no devices are connected if that option is available.
- Do not assume a particular battery runtime. It varies by phone, network conditions, and how connected devices use the connection; the cited platform guides provide no comparable battery-life figure.
When the hotspot will not work
- The hotspot option is missing: Check that mobile data is enabled and review the phone’s hotspot settings. On iPhone, contact the carrier if Personal Hotspot remains unavailable.
- The other device cannot find the network: Confirm that the hotspot is enabled, keep the devices nearby, and refresh the connecting device’s Wi-Fi list.
- The password is rejected: Check the password in hotspot settings and re-enter it on the connecting device.
- The device connects but has no internet: Check cellular reception and mobile-data access, then verify that your plan allows tethering.
- USB tethering does not work: Check cable and computer compatibility; Android USB tethering is not supported with Mac computers in Google’s documented setup.
