You can scan ordinary paperwork with a phone you already own, using a mobile app to capture pages, straighten or clean them up where supported, and save or share a PDF. You do not need to spend $30 to get started; that amount is an optional budget for a stand if you scan repeatedly and want steadier overhead positioning. A phone workflow is a practical option for occasional documents, not demonstrated as a match for every high-volume, archival, or strict image-quality need.

What a phone can do instead of a scanner

A phone scanning app uses the camera to capture paper documents and can produce a PDF. Google documents scanning directly in the Google Drive mobile app, while Adobe Scan advertises document capture, multi-page scans, cleanup tools, and output as PDF or JPEG. See Google Drive’s instructions for scanning documents and Adobe Scan’s product information.

That makes a phone a convenient alternative when you need to digitize a receipt, form, letter, or a few pages without setting up a dedicated device. The available product documentation establishes practical capture features, not parity with a dedicated scanner across document types or workloads; it does not provide a controlled scan-quality comparison.

How to scan a document into a PDF

  1. Choose a supported app. Start with a scanning feature in an app you already trust. Google Drive’s mobile app includes document scanning; Adobe Scan documents additional capture and cleanup options. Check that the app is currently supported on your phone and that its storage and account requirements suit you.
  2. Prepare the page. Place the paper on a flat, contrasting surface and use even light. Avoid shadows and glare, and hold the phone steady above the page. These are practical capture tips, not results from a comparative test.
  3. Capture and review. Follow the app’s prompts to photograph the page. Check that the crop includes the whole document, the orientation is correct, and text is legible. Use cleanup options if the app offers them and the result needs adjustment.
  4. Add any additional pages. If the app supports multi-page scanning, capture the rest of the document in order and review the sequence before saving.
  5. Save, then verify the file. Save or export as a PDF when that is the format you need. Open the finished file and check every page before sending it; a successful capture does not guarantee that the crop or page order is right.
  6. Share deliberately. Use the app’s share or export option, and confirm the recipient and destination before sending paperwork that contains personal information.

Which app should you use?

Compare apps by the job you need them to do, not by assuming that every camera-scanning app has the same tools. The following distinctions are established in the linked official documentation:

Canon Canoscan Lide 300 Scanner (PDF, AUTOSCAN, Copy, Send)
  • Scanner type: Document
  • Connectivity technology: USB
  • With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
  • Digitize documents and images
Option Documented capabilities What to check
Google Drive mobile app Google documents scanning documents with the mobile app. See Google Drive Help. Confirm the current steps and file destination in the app on your device.
Adobe Scan Adobe lists multi-page capture and cleanup tools and describes PDF and JPEG output. See Adobe Scan’s product page. The store listing notes in-app purchases, so do not assume every advanced feature is free. Check account, storage, and subscription requirements for the feature you need.

Before choosing, consider whether the app is supported on your device, whether it handles multiple pages and creates the file format you need, whether you need cleanup or text extraction, where it stores scans, and whether a feature requires an account or paid tier. The sources cited here do not establish an independent benchmark for image quality.

Where scans are saved—and how to avoid losing one

Adobe says scans can be saved to local storage, an Adobe account, or connected cloud services. If you use Adobe Scan with cloud syncing, its FAQ advises waiting for the PDF to finish syncing before closing the app. Check the chosen destination and confirm the file is available there before you rely on it or remove the original paper. See Adobe Scan’s product information and Adobe’s Scan FAQ.

Scanner Bin - The Clever Document Scanning Solution
  • Flatbed scanners simply cannot compete with your smartphone and a Scanner Bin. Improved resolution and color rendering compared to popular flatbed scanners. Compare to 1200 DPI. Takes a fraction of the time to scan at a fraction of the cost. Not to mention that flatbed scanners end up adding a lot of hazardous e-waste to your local landfill.
  • Solve the common issues with smartphone scanning. Provides a contrasting background for consistent edge-detection and auto-cropping. Controls the lighting and provides stability and proper positioning while you scan with your smartphone.
  • Scan photographs, receipts, letters, notes, artwork, fragile documents, etc. Also used as an aid for the blind or visually impaired or as a document camera for remote learning. When you aren't scanning, turn on its side to use as a desk-side bin to toss in the items you want to scan later.
  • This version is the lowest cost option for a scanner solution. It is also simplified for set up and use, and therefore is recommended for those who are blind, visually impaired or have movement disorders.
  • Use with popular FREE APPS for document scanning like Adobe Scan, Scanbot, Evernote Scannable, CamScanner, and Prizmo Go

What happened to Microsoft Lens?

Microsoft Lens is no longer a current choice for a new scanning workflow. Microsoft states that retirement began on January 9, 2026, and support ended on February 9, 2026. If you depend on Lens, move to another currently supported app and verify that you can still access any scans or storage your workflow relies on. See Microsoft’s Lens retirement notice.

Is a $30 phone stand worth it?

No accessory is needed for occasional scans: hold the phone steady and capture one page at a time. A stable overhead stand can make repeated top-down capture more convenient, especially when scanning a stack. Prices in retailer listings are live examples rather than a market survey: a CamScanner listing showed an adjustable stand at $28.23, and a Walmart listing showed an overhead phone mount at $9.18 when checked. Prices and availability can change; compare stability, overhead positioning, phone compatibility, and whether the accessory suits your scanning volume. See the CamScanner stand listing and Walmart overhead mount listing.

When a phone workflow may not be enough

The cited app pages explain mobile document capture and related features; they do not prove that phone scans match dedicated scanners for high-volume work, archival requirements, or applications with strict image-quality standards. If those requirements matter, assess the output and workflow against the standards you must meet rather than treating a phone app’s feature list as evidence of equivalence.
