Yes—switching camera apps can expose manual video controls your phone’s default camera app keeps out of sight. That can help you control exposure, color balance, focus, and frame rate, but it cannot add camera hardware or make every phone support every codec or resolution.
The right app depends on your phone model, operating system, and intended workflow. Final Cut Camera and Blackmagic Camera both offer manual controls, but their features and recording formats vary by device. Check compatibility before planning a shoot around a specific format.
What a different camera app can—and cannot—change
A dedicated video app can give you direct control over capture choices that an automatic camera app may handle for you. For example, Apple documents manual shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus in Final Cut Camera. Blackmagic Design lists frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, and ISO in Blackmagic Camera.

Those controls can make footage more consistent from shot to shot: you can set exposure and color balance deliberately rather than relying entirely on automatic adjustments. Monitoring tools such as focus peaking and overexposure indicators can also help you spot problems while recording.

An app does not upgrade the phone’s sensor, lens, processing capability, or storage. Nor does the presence of a format in an app’s documentation mean it works on every supported phone. Codec, resolution, frame-rate, and external-storage options can depend on the model, operating system, and app.
Which app fits your phone and workflow?
Neither app is a universal winner. Start with the phone and the feature you need, then verify the official compatibility information for that exact device.

Choose Final Cut Camera if
- You use an Apple device and want the manual controls documented in Apple’s guide.
- You may use Final Cut Pro for iPad’s Live Multicam workflow and have verified that your devices and software support it.
- You are considering ProRes or ProRes RAW and have checked model-specific availability first.
Choose Blackmagic Camera if
- You want to check a camera-app option available for both iOS and Android.
- You need controls such as frame rate or shutter angle and have confirmed they are available on your exact device.
- You want to investigate an audio workflow using a third-party microphone; the app’s specifications do not establish support for every microphone or connection.
Blackmagic Design describes its app as free, but app availability alone does not establish that every listed feature or format works on your phone. Consult its device-specific technical specifications before relying on one.

Check ProRes and storage support before recording
ProRes is not a safe assumption just because a camera app offers the format. Apple’s ProRes support page says recording requires iOS 15.1 or later and lists eligible iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro models. Supported resolutions and frame rates depend on the iPhone model and storage. Apple also says iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro models can record ProRes directly to connected external storage. Apple’s ProRes support page should be checked for the exact phone and current limits.

If you plan to record to an external drive, verify that your iPhone model, connection, recording format, and drive meet the requirements together. Do not assume that a USB-C port by itself guarantees a compatible external-recording setup.
Use this checklist before a shoot
- Identify the exact phone and OS version. Compatibility may differ between models, and iOS and Android versions of an app may not offer identical recording options.
- Pick the control or format you actually need. For example, decide whether the priority is manual focus, shutter control, a particular frame rate, or ProRes.
- Check the app’s official specifications for that phone. Confirm the control, codec, resolution, and frame rate—not merely that the app is available to install.
- Confirm storage and audio connections. If using an external drive or microphone, verify support for the specific phone and recording setup.
- Record a short test clip and review it. Check focus, exposure, audio, playback, and storage behavior before an important take.
What changed in Final Cut Camera 2.4
On September 29, 2026, Apple announced Final Cut Camera 2.4. Apple says the update adds variable-aperture support on iPhone 18 Pro. With iOS 27, it also adds scopes, clean SDI out, and genlock offset. These are tied to the named phone and software context; they should not be treated as features available on all iPhones.
