Neither approach has a proven universal advantage. A phone-based detox changes the cues and access settings on the smartphone you already use. A distraction-free device imposes limits by offering fewer functions in the first place. Start with settings when you want a cheap, reversible experiment; consider a separate minimalist phone when you repeatedly override limits and accept giving up some smartphone conveniences.
The choice is therefore about fit, not a contest with a single winner. Your essential apps, strongest distraction triggers, tolerance for friction, and willingness to buy and carry another device matter more than the label attached to the strategy.
What the two approaches actually change
| Decision factor | Phone-based digital detox | Distraction-free device |
|---|---|---|
| Level of intervention | Changes visual cues, notifications, app access or the home-screen layout on an existing smartphone. | Changes the device itself by omitting or limiting whole categories of software. |
| Typical examples | Grayscale, notification reduction, Focus modes, app limits, blocking controls and a deliberately sparse home screen. | A separate or replacement phone with calling and messaging plus a deliberately narrow tool set. |
| Access to distracting apps | Usually still available unless a block or limit is enabled; the owner can often change the setting. | May not be available on the device at all, depending on the model. |
| Essential smartphone functions | Remain available because the same phone is being configured. | Must be checked model by model. Maps, banking, authentication, work software, accessibility features or camera tools may be absent or different. |
| Reversibility | Usually quick to undo, which makes testing easy and bypassing easy. | Switching back involves carrying or setting up another device, creating more friction but not an impossible barrier. |
| Hardware commitment | Normally uses the phone you already own; no new hardware is required. | Requires a purchase or second device, a compatible cellular plan and a plan for moving contacts, authentication and other essentials. |
| Current price and availability | Not stated in the cited material; built-in controls are generally included with the existing phone. | Not stated in the cited material and varies by model, region, carrier and stock. |
| Evidence status | Grayscale and other self-nudges have been studied, with mixed outcomes beyond screen-time reduction. | No cited head-to-head trial establishes that a particular minimalist phone outperforms settings. |
“Digital detox” does not have to mean abandoning a phone. In this comparison it means reducing distraction while keeping your current smartphone. “Distraction-free device” means a separate or replacement phone designed to provide fewer opportunities for habitual scrolling.
How a phone-based detox works
Grayscale changes the visual reward, not the phone’s capabilities
Grayscale removes color from the interface. Feeds, badges and thumbnails remain present, but they lose some of the visual salience that can pull attention toward a tap. Dekker and Baumgartner’s 2024 paper describes this as a self-nudge: the environment changes while the underlying functions remain.
#1 Best Overall
- The Light Phone II is currently compatible with certain carriers in the US. Compatible carriers include: LIGHT, AT&T, T-MOBILE, VERIZON (except prepaid plans and Numbershare), TING, MINT, US MOBILE. It will not work with carriers that are not listed.
- Standalone minimalist phone that can be used to call and text. Group texting is supported
- The Light Phone II is built around a user-customizable menu of tools. All of the tools are custom-designed for our LightOS to ensure a thoughtful, and private user experience. Available tools currently include an alarm, a calculator, directions, a simple music player, notes/voice memo, calendar and a podcasts tool. The phone also supports hotspot tethering. We'll continue to release other utility-oriented tools, which will be available with software updates.
That distinction matters. Grayscale is a cue intervention, not a lockout. If you need a colorful map, camera preview or accessibility setting, you can normally restore color. Someone whose main problem is opening a social feed may still be able to do so in black and white.
Notifications and the home screen alter triggers
Disabling nonessential notifications removes interruptions before they become a session. Moving entertainment apps off the first screen, removing badges and leaving only essential tools visible makes an automatic tap less likely. These changes target the trigger rather than relying on willpower after an app has opened.
A randomized trial described in the available material treats small changes to phone settings or the surrounding environment as nudges that may reduce smartphone use. The result should be interpreted as support for changing triggers, not as a guaranteed effect size for a particular notification layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFocus modes, app limits and blocking controls add friction
App limits and blocking tools can pause access at a chosen time or after a quota. Focus modes can silence selected alerts or allow only a defined group of contacts and apps. They are stronger than grayscale because they interfere with access, but their strength depends on the exact control and whether you can override it with one tap or a passcode.
Menu names and paths vary by operating-system version. To configure one, open the phone’s Settings app and search for terms such as “grayscale,” “color filters,” “Focus,” “Do Not Disturb,” “notifications,” “app limits,” “Digital Wellbeing” or “Screen Time.” Read the confirmation screen carefully so you know whether a control merely hides alerts, pauses an app or blocks it completely.
What the evidence says about existing-phone changes
Earlier grayscale studies reported less measured screen time
Dekker and Baumgartner’s 2024 paper summarizes two earlier studies: Holte et al. (2023, N=133) reported 22 fewer minutes of objectively assessed daily screen time during grayscale periods, while Zimmermann and Sobolev (2022, N=112) reported 50 fewer minutes per day. Those figures belong to the earlier studies as summarized by the 2024 paper, not to the 2024 authors’ own sample.
Results were not consistent for every app category. One earlier study found less internet browsing and social-media use but no reduction in video use. Another found less game use but no difference in entertainment or social-media use. Different definitions of app categories may explain some of the disagreement. You should not treat 22 or 50 minutes as a promised saving for your own phone.

The 2024 one-week study found a narrower benefit
In their own one-week grayscale intervention, Dekker and Baumgartner observed reduced screen time but no perceived improvement in productivity and no self-reported improvement in sleep quality. The paper also notes that evidence for stress, sleep and productivity benefits had been lacking or mixed. A lower usage total is therefore not proof that your work, sleep or wellbeing will improve.
Adjacent studies test stronger restrictions, not minimalist hardware
A 2025 experiment involving the MinimalistPhone app reported reduced habitual behavior and overall screen time in its surfaced abstract. The available summary did not include the full methods, sample or effect sizes, so it is preliminary, app-specific evidence rather than a test of a physical minimalist phone.
A separate 2025 study blocked mobile internet for two weeks while leaving calls and texts available; participants could still use the internet on other devices. Its search result reports lower smartphone use plus improved sustained attention and subjective wellbeing. That finding demonstrates that a stronger access restriction can be studied, but it does not establish that a particular device, grayscale setting or app limit will produce the same result.
“Since this setting is readily available on all smartphones, it has the potential to be an easily implemented intervention to improve digital well-being.”

Dekker and Baumgartner use that sentence to frame grayscale’s accessibility. It is an argument for trying the setting, not evidence that it improves wellbeing for every user.
How a distraction-free device works
It removes options instead of asking you to ignore them
A purpose-limited phone can omit a browser, app store or email client. If the software is not installed and cannot be added through a normal store, an impulsive feed check requires a different device. This is a structural restriction rather than a visual nudge.
Light Phone III as an example
A secondary overview describes LightOS on Light Phone III as omitting a general-purpose browser, email client and app store while retaining calling, messages, alarm and timer, calculator, calendar, camera, directions, contacts, hotspot, music, notes, podcasts and gallery. Treat that list as a starting point, not a permanent specification: functions, carrier support, regional availability and software can change. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications before buying.

The example illustrates the trade-off. You may preserve communication, navigation and basic organization while giving up the general-purpose software that makes a conventional smartphone useful for banking, work logins, ride services or specialized accessibility tools.
A separate device is restrictive, not unbypassable
You can still carry the old smartphone, use a computer or reinstall a SIM. A minimalist phone raises the effort required to reach distracting services; it does not remove the services from your life. Its effectiveness depends on whether the added friction is enough to interrupt your normal routine and whether you keep a second device immediately available.
Compare the options on the six factors that matter
1. Strength of restriction
Grayscale changes appearance. Notification controls change interruptions. App limits and blockers restrict access for a defined period. A limited phone can remove entire classes of software. Match the intervention to the behavior you want to change: a colorful feed may respond to grayscale, while compulsive checking of one app may require a block or removal.
2. Essential functions
Write down the functions you need on an ordinary day before choosing hardware. Include maps, banking, two-factor authentication, work applications, social messaging, camera features, transit tools, health or accessibility software and emergency contacts. A setting change preserves all of them. A replacement phone may not.
3. Ease of reversal and bypass
Reversibility is useful during an experiment. You can turn a setting off when it interferes with work. The same convenience makes it easy to override a limit during a weak moment. A separate device creates switching friction, but it is still possible to return to the old phone. Decide whether you want a prompt, a speed bump or a genuine change in available tools.

4. Cost and commitment
Built-in controls normally require time rather than a purchase. A second phone adds hardware cost, a cellular plan or compatible SIM, charging and maintenance. Current prices and availability were not established in the cited material, so verify them for your country and carrier instead of relying on an old listing.
5. Your dominant trigger
Colorful visual feeds point toward grayscale as a low-cost test. Interruptions point toward notification and Focus changes. Repeatedly opening a particular app despite limits points toward stronger blocking or a device that does not support the app. If boredom leads you to switch from one distracting app to another, changing only one app may not be enough.

6. Your willingness to test
A short, self-observed trial can reveal whether the intervention changes your behavior before you buy hardware. This is a practical decision aid, not a validated clinical protocol. Record your own use and experience rather than assuming that a study average predicts you.
A reversible trial using the phone you already own
- Define the problem. Pick one behavior, such as opening a social feed during work, reacting to every alert or scrolling in bed. Choose measures you can observe: total screen time, number of unlocks, time in a specific app, bedtime use or whether a planned task was completed.
- Record a baseline. For three to seven ordinary days, note the selected measures without changing your routine. Include unusual days in your notes so a travel day or deadline is not mistaken for a normal result.
- Change one layer first. Start with the least disruptive intervention that matches the trigger: grayscale for visual appeal, notification reduction for interruptions, a sparse home screen for automatic taps or an app limit for a defined access problem.
- Make the setting harder to ignore. Remove badges, place essential apps on the first screen and move distracting apps to a folder or later page. If a blocking tool offers a passcode or scheduled lock, decide who will hold the passcode or whether you can override it.
- Run the trial for a defined period. Keep the period long enough to cover workdays and at least one weekend. Note urges, work interruptions, sleep experience and situations in which you disabled the control, not only the screen-time total.
- Review the trade-off. Compare your observations with the baseline. Keep the change if it reduces the target behavior without unacceptable friction. Modify one element at a time if the result is unclear.
- Escalate only when the pattern is clear. If you routinely bypass limits or need the phone to be less capable rather than merely less inviting, test a separate device. If grayscale changes nothing, do not infer that every setting will fail; choose a control that addresses access or interruptions.
Setting up a phone-based detox without losing necessary access
Start with notification triage
- Keep alerts for calls, direct messages from important contacts, authentication and genuine safety needs.
- Turn off marketing, breaking-news, game and social notifications that do not require an immediate response.
- Remove sound and vibration from alerts that can wait, then use a scheduled summary or manual check.
- Review lock-screen previews if seeing message content causes an automatic unlock.
Use grayscale as a cue experiment
Enable the phone’s grayscale or color-filter control for the times when visual feeds are most tempting. If you need color for navigation, photography or accessibility, schedule the change or use a quick toggle rather than abandoning the test. Track whether you open fewer distracting apps; do not judge success solely by whether the screen looks dull.

Keep a search or app library available for deliberate access so the layout reduces impulse without making the phone unusable.
Choose limits you will actually respect
An app timer that can be extended instantly is a reminder, not a hard barrier. Use scheduled Focus periods or blocking controls when you need uninterrupted work. Test emergency calling, authentication and accessibility before relying on a strict schedule.

You repeatedly defeat reversible controls
If you disable limits, restore notifications or switch grayscale off within minutes, the problem may be the availability of the app rather than the appearance of the interface. A device that excludes the relevant software can create the missing friction.
You can separate essential and optional tasks
A minimalist phone is practical when your daily essentials are covered by calling, messaging, a clock, calendar, navigation and a small set of approved tools. It is a poor fit if your work, healthcare, travel or financial life depends on software the device does not provide.

Decision guide by situation
| Your situation | First option to test | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Colorful feeds pull you into short checks. | Grayscale plus a simplified home screen. | It changes visual cues while preserving every essential app. |
| Alerts interrupt work or sleep. | Notification triage and scheduled Focus periods. | The trigger is the interruption, not necessarily the app itself. |
| You open one or two apps despite timers. | A stronger blocker, followed by a minimalist device if bypass continues. | Access friction must exceed the momentary urge. |
| You need banking, work authentication, specialist accessibility or advanced camera tools. | Keep the existing smartphone and configure it aggressively. | A limited phone may remove functions you cannot replace. |
| You want calls, texts and basic organization with no general app store. | Evaluate a purpose-limited phone such as the Light Phone III example. | Its design targets capability reduction, subject to current specifications. |
| You are unsure whether any intervention helps. | Run a measured settings trial first. | It provides personal evidence without a hardware purchase. |
Common failure modes and fixes
“Grayscale did nothing.”
That result is plausible because grayscale targets visual appeal. Move to notification control or app blocking if your trigger is an alert or automatic access. Do not conclude that a purpose-limited phone would fail from a cue-only test.
“My screen-time number fell, but I feel no better.”
The one-week 2024 study observed this separation: lower screen time did not bring perceived productivity or sleep-quality improvements. Examine the context of use and the activity that replaced scrolling. A reduction in minutes is useful only if it serves the goal you selected.
“I replaced social scrolling with another distraction.”
Removing one app can create substitution. Use a broader notification and home-screen plan, or choose a device whose available software excludes the whole category that causes the problem.
“The minimalist phone made ordinary tasks impossible.”
Restore a deliberate fallback plan rather than abandoning the goal in frustration. Keep the full smartphone at home for banking or work, schedule those tasks, and verify whether the limited device supports navigation, hotspot or authentication before making it your only phone.
“I carry both phones and use the old one anyway.”
Define where the smartphone lives, when it is powered on and which tasks justify retrieving it. If it remains in a pocket with notifications enabled, the hardware change has added cost without adding meaningful friction.
“The settings changed after an update.”
Operating-system labels and menu paths change. Search Settings by function, recheck scheduled rules after updates and test calls, messages and emergency access whenever you change a strict mode.

What is and is not established
The strongest supported claim is narrow: changing phone cues or access can change measured phone use for some people, and stronger restrictions can be studied without removing calls and texts. The evidence does not show that grayscale reliably improves sleep, productivity or wellbeing, nor that a named minimalist phone beats all smartphone settings.
Product specifications, carrier support, operating-system controls, marketplace stock and prices are volatile. Treat the Light Phone III feature list above as a model of the trade-off and confirm current details in official documentation for your region. Choose the least disruptive intervention that addresses your trigger, measure your own result and increase restriction only when the reversible option repeatedly fails.
