For reliable PM64D labels, set the app to the exact stock loaded: choose the correct media type (gap, continuous, or black mark), enter the measured width and length, load the roll straight, and run label recognition. The printer accepts media from 25.4 to 117 mm wide. Correct media and sensor alignment solve most feeding and off-center problems; print-density changes are mainly for correcting faint or overly dark output.

PM64D specifications that affect setup

The PM64D is a direct-thermal, black-and-white printer. It does not use ink cartridges, so image quality depends on compatible thermal stock, the print head, media settings, and heat (density). Phomemo lists these headline specifications for the PM64D in 2026:

Specification Value What it means for setup
Supported label width 25.4–117 mm The roll must fall inside this range, and the app width must match the physical stock.
Maximum print speed 150 mm/s This is a stated maximum, not a promise that every design, connection, or media type will print at that speed.
Resolution 203 DPI Design barcodes, small text, and graphics at a size that remains readable at 203 DPI.
Printing method Direct thermal, monochrome Use heat-sensitive thermal labels; no ribbon or ink cartridge is required.
Sample media 4 x 6 inch roll When your stock is actually 4 x 6 inches, enter 102 x 152 mm in the app.

The width range does not mean every roll is interchangeable. The printer also needs the correct registration method and the correct label length. A roll can be within the supported width range and still feed incorrectly if its gaps, black marks, or dimensions are configured incorrectly.

How to set label size in the app

1. Measure the physical stock

Measure one label rather than relying on the seller’s product name or a nearby preset. Measure across the printable label for width and along the feed direction for length. Record the measurements in millimetres, including the actual dimensions of a 4 x 6 inch label as 102 x 152 mm when that is the stock in the printer.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not choose a similar-looking preset. A small difference can move a barcode, crop text, or make the printer advance to the wrong place.

2. Select the paper type

In the dedicated label app’s label-creation flow, confirm the paper type before designing or printing:

  • Gap labels: Separate labels have a visible space between them. The sensor uses that gap to locate the next label.
  • Continuous paper: There is no pre-cut gap. The software’s length setting determines where one print job ends.
  • Black-mark labels: A dark registration mark on the backing or reverse side tells the sensor where each label starts.

Select the mode that matches the roll. Choosing gap mode for black-mark stock, or black-mark mode for ordinary gap stock, can result in extra feeding, stopping between labels, or paper-status errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Enter width and length

Enter the measured width and length exactly in the app. For 4 x 6 shipping stock, use 102 mm width and 152 mm length when those are the actual dimensions. If the app presents a preset, verify its numbers rather than assuming the preset is correct.

Keep the design inside the printable area. A label that is physically correct can still appear clipped if the artwork extends beyond the configured width or length. Check a single test print before sending a full batch.

4. Recheck after changing rolls

Changing from one size or registration style to another is a new setup, not just a media swap. Re-select the paper type and dimensions, then run recognition before printing the next job. This prevents the printer from applying the previous roll’s feed distance to the new one.

Loading the roll and aligning the sensor

  1. Open the PM64D and load the roll with the printable side facing up.
  2. Keep the roll straight and smooth. Make sure the leading edge is not folded, skewed, or stuck to the backing.
  3. Close the cover firmly so the media path and sensor have a consistent position.
  4. Position the gap, hole, or black mark so it passes over the printer’s sensor. A registration feature that sits away from the sensor can produce an apparently random calibration result.
  5. Use the app’s feed or recognition control to identify the media before printing a job.

If the labels are narrow, confirm that the roll is centred and that the guides are not pressing the stock sideways. Sideways pressure can make a straight roll enter the sensor path at an angle, which looks like a size or calibration fault.

How to calibrate gap, continuous, and black-mark media

Gap and continuous media

With the roll loaded, confirm the app’s paper type and dimensions, then start automatic label recognition from the printer’s feed control. The printer should advance through the media and establish the registration position. For continuous stock, recognition cannot find a physical gap; the length configured in the app is what defines each print area.

Black-mark media

Select black-mark media and use the black-mark recognition procedure shown in Phomemo’s PM64D instructions or the app. The mark must be presented to the sensor in the orientation expected by the printer. If the mark is on the underside or at an unusual edge, verify that the roll is loaded according to its packaging and quick-start directions rather than guessing the orientation.

If recognition still fails

  1. Stop the feed and remove the roll.
  2. Inspect the sensor path for adhesive, paper dust, or a torn label.
  3. Clean the print head and sensor with a 75% alcohol pad, allowing the surfaces to dry before loading media again.
  4. Reload the roll straight, recheck the paper type and dimensions, and repeat recognition.
  5. Print one test label and watch where the printer stops relative to the gap or mark.

Phomemo support documentation publishes exact feed-button flash patterns for related PM241-BT and D520-BT-family devices. Those timings are not a PM64D firmware-specific table. If a PM64D quick-start guide or on-screen instruction uses a different button duration or light pattern, follow the PM64D instruction.

Choosing print density

Print density controls how much heat is applied to the thermal image. It changes darkness; it does not change label dimensions, registration, or feed distance. The Print Master app places the control in its Settings area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start at the default

Begin near the app’s default density with a clean head and compatible thermal stock. Print a representative label containing the smallest text and a barcode you intend to use. Judge the result after it has printed, not from the design preview.

When to increase density

Raise density modestly when text, fine lines, or barcodes are visibly faint. Make one small change at a time and print again. Excessive heat can make edges spread, reduce the spaces in a barcode, or darken the backing.

When to reduce density

Lower density when black areas look heavy, fine details fill in, or the media shows heat-related smearing. A darker setting is not automatically a better setting; the goal is a solid, readable image with distinct white spaces.

What density cannot fix

Density will not correct a wrong paper size, an incorrect gap or black-mark mode, a dirty sensor, a skewed roll, or a contaminated print head. Fix those causes first. Increasing heat to compensate for a dirty head can produce a darker but still incomplete image and may accelerate smearing.

Connecting the PM64D and choosing a workflow

The official PM64D FAQ states that the printer cannot connect directly to a phone through the phone’s normal Bluetooth-device screen. Enable Bluetooth on the phone, then complete pairing from inside the dedicated label app. If the app cannot find the printer, check that Bluetooth is enabled and that the app has the permissions it requests.

Troubleshooting feeding, alignment, and print quality

Symptom First check Corrective action
Labels feed too far or stop between labels Paper type and sensor alignment Select gap, continuous, or black mark correctly; make sure the registration feature passes the sensor; run automatic recognition again.
Print is faint Density and print-head cleanliness Increase density modestly, clean the head with a 75% alcohol pad, and retry with compatible thermal stock.
Print is too dark or smeared Excess density or heat Reduce density and use compatible thermal media. If smearing remains, clean the head and inspect the stock.
Content is clipped or off-centre Width and length mismatch Measure the roll and enter the exact dimensions. Confirm that the design fits inside those dimensions and that the roll is not skewed.
Phone cannot find the printer Pairing method and permissions Enable Bluetooth and connect from inside the dedicated app, not the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings page.
Printer reports a paper error after changing rolls Old media profile still selected Choose the new paper type, width, and length, reload the roll straight, and run recognition.

Separate feed faults from print faults

If the printer advances the correct distance but the image is light, dark, or streaked, investigate density, head cleanliness, and thermal stock. If the image quality is good but the printer advances too far, stops between labels, or repeats a label, investigate paper type, dimensions, and sensor alignment instead. Treating every problem as a density problem wastes media and does not repair registration.

Check the first label in a batch

After any change to media, dimensions, density, or calibration, print one label. Verify the top and bottom margins, the position of the barcode, and whether the next label begins at the expected point. Only then print a larger batch.

Media selection checklist

Before buying or loading replacement stock, verify all of the following:

  • Width is between 25.4 and 117 mm.
  • Length matches the value you will enter in the app.
  • The roll uses gap, continuous, or black-mark registration that the PM64D can recognize.
  • The printable side is compatible direct-thermal material.
  • The adhesive and backing suit the surface where the label will be applied.
  • For 4 x 6 shipping labels, the actual size is 102 x 152 mm before selecting that setting.

Matching only the advertised size is insufficient. Two rolls with the same width and length can require different paper-type settings if one uses gaps and the other uses black marks.

A dependable PM64D setup sequence

  1. Measure the new label’s width and length.
  2. Load it printable-side up, straight, and smooth.
  3. In the label app, select the matching paper type and enter the measured dimensions.
  4. Align the gap, hole, or black mark with the sensor.
  5. Run automatic recognition or the PM64D black-mark procedure shown in its instructions.
  6. Print one representative test label.
  7. Adjust density only if the test is too light or too dark.
  8. If feeding remains incorrect, clean the head and sensor, reload the roll, and repeat recognition.

This sequence keeps mechanical registration, media configuration, and image darkness separate, making it easier to identify the actual cause of a failure.
