What do its steam and safety features mean in practice?
Steam output and spray
The 40 g/min continuous-steam and 160 g steam-boost figures indicate the output Philips specifies for the iron; they do not establish how quickly it removes creases in actual use. The spray function adds a way to dampen fabric, while the boost is intended for a stronger burst of steam.

Vertical steaming
Philips says the vertical-steam function can refresh garments on a hanger and remove creases from hanging curtains. That describes the intended use, not a verified result for every fabric or crease. Check garment-care instructions before applying steam.
Automatic shut-off
Philips specifies shut-off after 8 minutes when the iron is motionless on its heel, or after 30 seconds when left motionless flat. The difference matters: the flat-position interval is much shorter. Treat this as a safety feature, not a substitute for unplugging the iron after use.

Is the GC2997/40 a good steam iron?
The published feature set makes it a conventional option on paper for ordinary ironing: it has a 320 ml tank, a stated steam boost, drip stop, vertical steam, and a built-in descaling control. However, the available evidence does not include hands-on testing or a head-to-head comparison. It cannot establish real-world steam output, ironing speed, comfort, or long-term durability, so those outcomes should not be inferred from the ratings alone.

Is the Philips GC2997/40 still available?
Philips currently marks the model discontinued or no longer available on its product and support pages. That does not establish whether a retailer or reseller has remaining stock. Philips’ Australia support page provides model-specific support information.
If considering a third-party listing, check that the model number is exactly GC2997/40. Confirm whether the item is new, used, refurbished, or open-box; who the seller is; what returns are allowed; and whether the plug and voltage suit your region. Ask what warranty applies to that particular purchase rather than assuming Philips’ listed two-year worldwide guarantee will cover a resale or a buyer in every jurisdiction. What should you check for maintenance?
Philips says ordinary tap water is suitable for this model and lists a built-in Calc Clean slider. The official support materials also cover water type, descaling, soleplate cleaning, leakage, and failure to heat.
