Phasmophobia has surpassed 30 million sales across PC and consoles since its 2020 Early Access launch, Kinetic Games announced on October 8, 2026. The milestone arrives as the four-player horror game’s annual Crimson Eye event returns, adding Blood Moon conditions, faster ghosts and boosted payouts through November 1.
The event has also revived complaints from some Steam users who describe seasonal content as a repetitive “grindfest.” Those comments represent a slice of community opinion, not a platform-wide verdict: Steam’s listing showed 94% positive English reviews overall and 88% positive recent reviews when checked on October 15, 2026.
Why the 30-million milestone matters
The sales figure covers PC and console copies sold since Phasmophobia entered Early Access in 2020. Kinetic Games CEO and game director Daniel Knight said his original ambition was “to sell 1000 units in the first year,” adding that it was “hard to believe we’re celebrating 30 million.”
The achievement is notable because development is still unfinished. Steam describes the Early Access build as incomplete and subject to change, with player participation intended to shape development. The game has therefore reached a major commercial milestone during a six-year development period rather than after a conventional 1.0 launch.

What happens in the Crimson Eye event
Crimson Eye is the 2026 Halloween event and runs through November 1. Its Blood Moon weather rotates through selected locations. According to coverage of the event, the changes are:

Reported event locations include Tanglewood Drive, Camp Woodwind, Grafton Farmhouse, Bleasdale Farmhouse, Point Hope, Edgefield Road, Nell’s Diner and Willow Street. The rotating format means the available maps can change during the event rather than remaining fixed for its entire run.
Goals and rewards
Crimson Eye combines community goals with individual objectives. Reported rewards include the Beholder ID Card and Badge, Blood Moon Trophy, Blood Moon Charm, a seasonal T-shirt and trophy upgrades.

The event schedule also includes Twitch drops through October 15, double XP from October 15 to 22, and Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts during the final week. These dates are the reported 2026 schedule, so players should check the in-game event panel for the currently active objective and reward.
How to approach the tougher conditions
- Plan an exit route before entering a location, since the 15% movement increase leaves less time to react.
- Use the equipment that identifies evidence efficiently, including EMF readers, Spirit Boxes, thermometers and night-vision cameras.
- Keep investigations focused: the faster sanity loss makes unnecessary room checks more costly.
- Use the higher payout to offset failed runs, but treat survival and evidence collection as the priority rather than repeatedly forcing an unfinished objective.
Why some Steam users call it a “grindfest”
The label comes from individual Steam-community comments quoted in a Notebookcheck report. One user complained that seasonal events had become “grindfests and lazy reskins.” Another called the rewards boring, while a third said the developers had not listened to players who disliked seasonal grinding.
Those are qualitative remarks from unnamed users, not a survey or a measured percentage of the player base. Steam’s review figures provide broader context: the listing showed 360,223 English reviews with 94% positive overall, alongside 2,465 recent reviews with 88% positive. The numbers indicate strong general reception while still allowing for event-specific frustration about repeated objectives or rewards.

Is Phasmophobia still in Early Access?
Yes. Steam lists Phasmophobia as an Early Access, four-player online co-op psychological horror game released on September 18, 2020. Kinetic Games remains both developer and publisher. The Early Access status means features, systems and presentation can change before the full release.

Kinetic Games’ 2026 roadmap describes a path to 1.0 rather than a completed launch. Planned work includes a Player Character update, migration to Unity 6, a netcode update, a Nintendo Switch 2 launch, a horror rework and a lore update. The roadmap also says Crimson Eye, Cursed Hollow and Winter’s Jest are scheduled to return in 2026.
Current coverage places the 1.0 release in the second half of 2027. That timing follows a delay intended to prioritize quality over speed, so it should be treated as a target rather than a guaranteed date. The Switch 2 version is confirmed in the roadmap but was not given a release date in the available coverage.

Where can you play it, and what does it cost?
Phasmophobia is built around entering haunted locations with up to four players, collecting evidence and identifying one of more than 20 ghost types. Steam lists more than 10 locations, five default difficulty levels and weekly challenges. The Steam price was $19.99 when checked; prices can vary by store and region.

The core loop supports voice recognition as well as physical tools, allowing teams to gather evidence through conversation and measurements. Its cooperative design makes communication important, especially during Crimson Eye’s faster hunts and accelerated sanity drain.

Phasmophobia’s sales performance gives Kinetic Games room to continue the long transition from Early Access to 1.0, while the mixed reaction to seasonal events shows the challenge of keeping returning players interested. Crimson Eye offers more dangerous investigations and better rewards, but whether that trade-off feels worthwhile depends on how much repetition an individual player tolerates.
