To identify a ghost in Phasmophobia, first find the room with the strongest signs of activity, then use evidence tools to test for clues and record confirmed evidence in your journal. A cold room, one ghost orb, or an unusual event is not enough on its own: the answer comes from the evidence combination available at your contract’s difficulty.
What to bring on an early investigation
For a simple first pass, take an EMF Reader, thermometer, and video camera when available, plus a light if you need one to see safely. This starter set helps you look for activity, compare room temperatures, and scan for ghost orbs. There is no universally best loadout: tool tiers, weather, the map, and contract difficulty all affect what is useful. The game’s equipment guide describes eight main items supplied by default, with optional equipment that players purchase and add to their in-game loadout; item tiers unlock at different player levels and have different properties. See the equipment guide.
How to find the ghost room
- Check likely rooms for activity. Look for interactions and use the EMF Reader to investigate recent activity. A reading can help direct your search, but it is not by itself a ghost identity.
- Compare temperatures between rooms. A room that is colder than others can be a useful location clue. It does not confirm Freezing Temperatures evidence; use the game’s evidence process and journal rather than treating any cold reading or visible breath as proof.
- Check the breaker and weather. If the breaker starts off, turning it on early lets the property move back toward normal temperature. Snow can lower temperatures across the location, making a cold room or cold breath less useful for pinpointing the ghost’s room.
- Set up evidence equipment in the likely room. Place tools where they can detect the relevant clue or intersect the ghost’s movement, then allow time for a response. Ghost Writing may take time, so a blank book immediately after placement is not a definitive exclusion.
These search recommendations are described in GameSpot’s beginner tips guide. Finding the likely room and identifying the ghost are separate jobs: the first narrows where to investigate; the second requires evidence. The official PlayStation game page describes evidence gathering with tools including EMF Readers, Spirit Boxes, thermometers, and night-vision cameras, and lists a practice mode.

| Tool | What it tests or helps with | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| EMF Reader | Tests for EMF Level 5 and helps gauge activity. | Check recent interactions and use readings as one clue while searching. |
| Thermometer | Helps compare temperatures; Freezing Temperatures can be evidence. | Compare rooms and account for weather and breaker state. A colder room alone does not confirm freezing evidence. |
| Video Camera | Can be used with night vision to look for ghost orbs. | Scan from a useful vantage point. An orb sighting needs the Mimic caveat below. |
| D.O.T.S. Projector | Tests for D.O.T.S. evidence. | Place it so its coverage can intersect the ghost’s movement; properties vary by tier. |
| Spirit Box | Lets you ask questions and test for a response. | Follow the in-game requirements. If voice recognition is difficult, try the text-based UI setting. |
| UV Light | Tests surfaces for UV evidence, including fingerprints or footprints. | Inspect surfaces soon after interactions. |
| Ghost Writing Book | Tests for Ghost Writing evidence. | Place it in the likely room early and give it time. |
Tool functions and tier details are outlined in the Phasmophobia Wiki equipment guide. Use the journal to record evidence as it is confirmed and compare the remaining candidates. The exact evidence rules can depend on difficulty and may change between game versions. For example, the community-maintained evidence reference describes Nightmare contracts as limiting each ghost to two evidence types, with one type hidden; check the current contract and game information before relying on that rule as current.

- All seams and stress points are double-stitched for durability, and the reinforced bottom flattens to fit more items and hold larger objects.
How to narrow down ghost candidates
Use combinations, not isolated clues
Record each confirmed evidence type in the journal, then use the remaining possibilities to decide what to test next. A single noisy event, one orb sighting, or a cold breath can be misleading. In particular, the Mimic can produce ghost orbs even though orbs are not its official evidence, so do not treat orbs alone as conclusive. GameSpot explains this caveat in its beginner tips guide.
Use behavior as a supporting clue
Some traits can help distinguish candidates when evidence is limited, but they are specialist clues rather than a substitute for a reliable evidence record. The identification guide describes examples such as a Revenant’s movement behavior, an Obake’s six-fingered handprint, and an Oni’s inability to produce a mist-form ghost event. Exact behavior details are version-sensitive; consult the community-maintained ghost identification reference and treat behavior as supporting evidence, not a guaranteed result.

Stay safer while gathering evidence
- Turn off electronics when hiding during a hunt. Active electronics can make you easier for a ghost to detect. GameSpot also notes a specific interaction between active electronics and the Raiju. See its beginner tips guide.
- Learn Incense timing before depending on it. Incense can create time to escape, but its effect depends on tier and timing; it is not automatic protection.
- Be cautious about looping. Running around obstacles can be risky, especially with fast ghosts. Beginners are better served by learning routes on smaller maps and lower difficulty before relying on it.
- Use a text-based UI if speech recognition is a barrier. GameSpot describes this setting as an alternative for Spirit Box and cursed-object interaction.
- Use practice mode to learn the basics. The PlayStation product page lists a consequence-free practice mode, which can help you get familiar with tools and setup before a more demanding contract.
When a clue should not settle the answer
- A cold room helps locate activity, but weather and breaker state affect temperature; it is not the same as confirmed Freezing Temperatures evidence.
- A video-camera orb needs to be considered alongside the Mimic’s ability to show orbs without them being official evidence.
- Behavioral traits can be informative, but circumstances and equipment affect what you observe, and detailed mechanics can change across versions.
- Evidence availability depends on difficulty, so do not apply a fixed evidence count to every contract.
