Phantom sense in VR is a reported feeling of touch associated with virtual contact even when no matching physical touch occurs. People describe it in social VR, and one controlled experiment also recorded tingling during virtual self-touch without physical stimulation. The sensation is subjective and does not mean an avatar physically touched the person; researchers have not established how common it is or exactly why it happens.
What is phantom sense in VR?
Phantom sense, also called phantom touch or phantom tactile sensation (PTS), is an umbrella term used for reported tactile sensations associated with virtual events despite the absence of corresponding physical contact. Reports vary: a person might describe tingling or another touch-like feeling where their avatar was touched.
The terminology spans different kinds of evidence. In social VR discussions, researchers have analyzed users’ accounts of phantom tactile sensations. In a separate controlled immersive-VR experiment, the authors used “phantom touch illusion” for tingling participants reported while touching their virtual bodies without physical stimulation. These uses are related, but they are not identical experimental situations.

Can you feel touch in VR?
Some people report feeling touch during VR experiences, but a headset does not physically transmit an avatar’s touch to the wearer. Phantom touch refers to the person’s reported sensation, not physical contact. In contrast, a haptic wearable can deliberately provide physical feedback through a device touching or stimulating the wearer.

Having access to VR makes virtual experiences possible, but neither a headset nor any particular device guarantees phantom sense.
What might cause phantom touch?
The cause is not settled, and findings from one setup should not be treated as a universal explanation. A 2023 controlled study had participants touch their bodies through a virtual object in immersive VR. Participants reported tingling at the corresponding virtual-body location without physical stimulation, including when they touched body parts they could not see.

The study authors proposed that tactile gating and multisensory, top-down input involving the body schema could help explain the result. They wrote that the report of touch on invisible body parts “indicates that tactile gating is not exclusively based on vision, but rather on multi-sensory, top-down input involving body schema.” This is the authors’ interpretation of that experiment, not a proven account of every phantom-touch report.
In a qualitative analysis of social VR discussions, users described sensations that began naturally, sensations they intentionally tried to develop, and reports associated with substance use. The researchers connected some user-described development strategies with multisensory cues resembling the rubber-hand illusion and with mental imagery. Those observations do not establish a reliable training method or explain why some people experience PTS and others do not.

Can you develop phantom touch?
Some social VR users in the analyzed discussions described intentionally trying to develop the sensation. That evidence is based on qualitative online accounts, not a validated program or proof that a particular technique will work. The controlled experiment studied a specific virtual self-touch illusion; it does not establish a general method for producing phantom sense in everyday VR use.
Substance use appears among reports in the social VR analysis, but it is not a safe or evidence-based way to induce phantom touch. The available findings do not establish a guaranteed way to develop the experience.

How common is phantom sense?
There is no representative population estimate in the cited evidence. Chen, Spapé, and Jacucci’s 2024 qualitative study analyzed 2,885 posts by 1,408 users from social VR discussions. Those numbers describe the material the researchers analyzed, not the share of all VR users who experience phantom touch.

That figure is reported secondhand by Chen and colleagues, and the primary study was not independently verified here. Its small sample does not establish prevalence among VR users generally.

Is phantom sense real?
It is real as a genuinely reported subjective sensation: users have described it in social VR discussions, and participants in a controlled VR study reported tingling without physical stimulation. That does not mean virtual contact physically reaches the body. Reports and experiments document experiences in particular contexts; they do not establish how widespread the sensation is or a single cause.
Can phantom touch be pleasant or unwanted?
Accounts in the social VR study were mixed. Some users described pleasurable sensations, greater immersion, or meaningful social interactions. Others reported discomfort or pain. These are qualitative reports, not measured clinical rates or outcomes that apply to everyone.
The study also records concerns about unwanted virtual touching and harassment, including reports from users who said others touched their avatars without consent after learning they could feel it. In social VR, consent and boundaries matter even when the reported sensation is not physical contact. A person’s experience of phantom touch does not make virtual contact physically equivalent to real-world touch, nor does it make unwanted interaction acceptable.
