Phantom Hourglass is the better choice if you want freer ocean travel, island-hopping objectives, and a straightforward solo adventure. Spirit Tracks is the better choice if you prefer planned routes, train controls, and puzzles that coordinate Link with a companion. Neither game is automatically superior: the deciding factor is whether you would rather draw a ship’s course or manage a train network.
Both are Nintendo DS action-adventure games designed around stylus input. Phantom Hourglass released on 19 October 2007, while Spirit Tracks followed on 11 December 2009. The comparison below focuses on how their traversal and puzzle systems change the feel of exploration, which game suits different players, whether to play one first, and what to check when buying an original cartridge.
Quick verdict: choose the traversal system you enjoy
The most useful way to decide is to ignore the title logos for a moment and compare the movement systems. Phantom Hourglass gives you an ocean, a stylus-drawn ship route, and separate island destinations. Spirit Tracks gives you a rail map, selectable tracks, speed control, hazards, and a cannon-equipped train. Those systems shape almost every journey between dungeons and objectives.
| Decision point | Phantom Hourglass | Spirit Tracks |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld movement | Draw a ship’s course through the sea with the stylus, then manage the voyage. | Choose rail routes, control train speed, avoid obstacles, and operate the cannon. |
| Exploration feel | Island hopping with a comparatively freer sense of choosing destinations. | Directed travel in which route selection and train handling are part of the challenge. |
| Puzzle model | Link-focused stylus actions and environmental interaction. | Stylus actions for Link plus touch commands that direct a Phantom companion in dungeons. |
| Best fit | Players who want a clear, self-contained solo loop and open-feeling travel. | Players who enjoy logistics, route planning, and coordinating two characters. |
| Original release | 19 October 2007, Nintendo DS. | 11 December 2009, Nintendo DS. |
Nintendo’s game description for Phantom Hourglass specifically highlights drawing a ship’s course between islands and controlling its cannon during voyages. Its description of Spirit Tracks emphasizes selecting tracks, managing speed, dealing with obstacles, and firing the train’s cannon. Those are not cosmetic differences; they determine what you do whenever the game moves you from one place to another.

What both games have in common
Both titles are Nintendo DS Zelda action-adventures built around the stylus rather than conventional button-only movement. Nintendo’s contemporary description calls Phantom Hourglass “a stylus controlled action-adventure game, and the first Nintendo DS title in The Legend of Zelda series.” You can read that wording in Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview.
That shared control philosophy matters when choosing between them. In either game, the touch screen is not an optional accessory layered over a traditional control scheme. Drawing, tapping, aiming, and issuing commands are central interactions. If you specifically want a DS Zelda experience in which the stylus is the primary way to interact with the world, both satisfy that requirement.
The difference appears after you leave a dungeon or settlement. Phantom Hourglass asks you to plan a sea course and then deal with events during the crossing. Spirit Tracks asks you to understand the rail layout, select a route, regulate the train, and respond to hazards. In other words, both use touch input, but one makes free-form navigation the defining activity while the other makes transportation management the defining activity.

Phantom Hourglass: draw a course, then sail between islands
In Phantom Hourglass, you draw the ship’s course with the stylus before setting out. The route-based drawing gives you an immediate sense of agency: you decide how the vessel should move through the ocean instead of simply selecting a destination from a list. During the voyage, you also control the cannon against enemies, so travel is an active part of play rather than a loading transition.
This structure favors players who like to look at a map, identify an island objective, and make a direct plan. The islands provide distinct, self-contained destinations, while the open water creates space between them. Because the route is drawn, small adjustments to your intended course are part of the interaction. The result is a loop that feels easy to understand: choose an island, sketch a path, handle the voyage, and begin the next local objective.
The editorial advantage is clarity. A player who prefers a traditional solo adventure can usually think in terms of “where am I going next?” and “what do I need to do there?” without also treating the entire transport system as a separate puzzle. The trade-off is that the sea journey itself is a recurring system you must engage with, including cannon use when enemies appear.

Spirit Tracks: route planning is part of the challenge
Spirit Tracks replaces the ship with a controllable train. Nintendo describes a journey in which you choose tracks, control speed, handle obstacles, and fire the train’s cannon. That means transportation has more explicit operating rules: the route is constrained by the rail network, and your decisions include not only where to go but how to conduct the trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA fixed rail system creates a more directed overworld. Instead of drawing a line across open water, you evaluate available tracks and commit to one. Speed control makes timing and caution relevant, while obstacles require attention during the ride. The cannon adds an active defensive or offensive action to the journey, just as the ship’s cannon does in Phantom Hourglass, but within a train-management framework.
This approach suits players who enjoy systems that ask for planning before movement and monitoring during movement. The same structure can feel less free to someone who wants to improvise a route or wander between destinations. Spirit Tracks is therefore not simply “Phantom Hourglass with a train”; it changes the mental task from plotting a voyage to operating a route.
Which system feels more open?
“Open” here describes the feeling of travel, not a technical claim about map size. Phantom Hourglass generally presents the more open-feeling choice because you draw courses across the ocean and approach separate islands. Spirit Tracks feels more directed because the rail network determines which connections are available and route planning happens within that network.
If your favorite part of an adventure game is deciding your own line between destinations, start with Phantom Hourglass. If you enjoy optimizing a permitted route, regulating movement, and responding to hazards on the way, Spirit Tracks is the stronger match.

Puzzles and stylus interaction
Phantom Hourglass: a focused solo interaction model
Phantom Hourglass concentrates its touch interactions on Link and the environment around him. The stylus is the primary tool for performing actions, and the game’s puzzle rhythm is consequently easy to describe: observe a problem, use the touch screen to manipulate or mark what you need, and carry out the solution as Link.

That single-character focus makes the game a natural fit for players who prefer puzzles that remain centered on their own decisions. You are still learning the rules of each room and applying them through touch, but you are not simultaneously supervising another character’s position. The result is a simpler cognitive loop, especially for someone new to stylus-first Zelda design.
“Simpler” does not mean shallow. It means the interaction is concentrated: your attention stays on Link, the room, and the stylus gesture required to progress. If you find companion commands distracting or prefer to solve spatial problems one actor at a time, this is the safer choice.
Spirit Tracks: coordinate Link with a Phantom companion
Spirit Tracks adds a Phantom companion to its dungeon puzzles. Nintendo’s description explains that you can command the Phantom by tapping it and drawing a path on the touch screen. You therefore solve some spaces by coordinating Link’s actions with a second character’s movement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This changes the puzzle grammar. Instead of asking only “what can Link do here?”, you may need to ask “where should Link stand, where should the Phantom go, and what sequence lets both positions work together?” Drawing a path gives you direct control over the companion’s intended movement, while tapping selects or addresses the Phantom. The extra layer is the reason Spirit Tracks appeals to players who enjoy companion-based problem solving.
There is a clear trade-off. The companion system can make a solution feel more expressive because two characters can occupy complementary roles. It can also make a room feel busier if you prefer immediate, solo interactions. Choose Phantom Hourglass for the more focused control loop; choose Spirit Tracks when coordinating a partner is part of the appeal rather than an interruption.
How to decide based on puzzle tolerance
- Prefer one-character control: Phantom Hourglass keeps the stylus puzzle loop centered on Link.
- Enjoy planning sequences: Spirit Tracks rewards thinking about both Link’s position and the Phantom’s path.
- Want the clearest introduction to DS Zelda controls: Phantom Hourglass presents fewer simultaneous roles.
- Want a system to master: Spirit Tracks adds companion direction on top of ordinary stylus interaction.
Exploration, pacing, and the shape of an adventure
The two games divide attention differently between local objectives and movement systems. Phantom Hourglass places emphasis on island destinations. You travel to an island, pursue its immediate objective, and return to the sea when the next destination calls for it. The ocean crossing becomes a recognizable interlude that connects otherwise distinct places.

Spirit Tracks makes the connection itself more system-driven. The rail map, selected tracks, speed management, obstacles, and cannon all make the journey an activity with its own decisions. The overworld therefore feels more directed, but it also gives route planning a larger role in the overall adventure.
Neither approach is objectively faster or better. A player who wants a clean separation between “travel” and “solve the next place” may find Phantom Hourglass more natural. A player who likes transportation to remain an active problem may find Spirit Tracks more rewarding. Consider what you want to think about when you are not inside a dungeon: geography and destination choice, or route operation and logistics.
Which game is better for different players?
Choose Phantom Hourglass if you want freer travel
- You like drawing your own ocean course with the stylus.
- Island hopping and distinct destination objectives sound more appealing than a fixed rail network.
- You want a straightforward solo loop centered on Link.
- You prefer travel that feels exploratory rather than heavily scheduled.
- You want to start with the less systems-heavy of the two control models.
This recommendation follows Nintendo’s documented ship and island mechanics, combined with the practical effect those mechanics have on pacing. It is not a claim that every player will rate the game higher; it identifies the audience most likely to appreciate its structure.
Choose Spirit Tracks if you want route planning
- You enjoy selecting among available tracks and managing speed during a journey.
- Obstacles and train-cannon operation sound like meaningful parts of travel rather than interruptions.
- You like directed overworlds with explicit transportation rules.
- You want dungeon puzzles that involve Link and a controllable Phantom companion.
- You enjoy learning a multi-part system and applying it repeatedly.
Spirit Tracks is the stronger fit when the transportation layer and companion coordination are reasons to play, not chores to endure. Its appeal comes from combining those systems with the shared stylus foundation of a DS Zelda adventure.
Choose based on what you disliked in similar games
If you tend to lose interest when travel feels constrained, start with Phantom Hourglass. Its drawn-course sailing gives you more direct authorship over the line between destinations. If you instead lose interest when overworld travel feels like a neutral gap between puzzles, start with Spirit Tracks, where route choice, speed, obstacles, and cannon use keep the journey active.

Should you play Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks first?
There is no requirement in the documented mechanics or release information that makes one a mandatory prerequisite for the other. For a first game, choose according to the traversal preference above rather than assuming release order determines the correct entry point.
Play Phantom Hourglass first when you want the clearest introduction to this pair’s stylus-centered adventure structure: draw a ship route, manage the voyage, and focus on Link’s local objectives. Play Spirit Tracks first when the train and Phantom companion are the features that attracted you in the first place. Starting with the game whose core system you already understand conceptually reduces the chance that the controls feel like a barrier.
If you plan to play both, release order is a sensible progression: Phantom Hourglass (2007), then Spirit Tracks (2009). It lets you experience the earlier ship-based approach before moving to the later train-and-companion design, without treating that order as a story requirement.

Is Spirit Tracks worth playing if you liked Phantom Hourglass?
Yes, if what you liked was the Nintendo DS stylus foundation and you are willing to exchange open-feeling sailing for more structured transportation. Spirit Tracks preserves the basic appeal of touch-driven Zelda interaction while changing the overworld to a train system and adding Phantom commands in dungeons.
The important qualification is that enjoyment of Phantom Hourglass does not automatically guarantee enjoyment of Spirit Tracks. If your favorite part was the freedom of drawing ship routes and moving between islands, Spirit Tracks may feel more constrained because rail connections define the available paths. If your favorite part was using the stylus to solve spatial problems, Spirit Tracks gives you an additional tool through the Phantom’s tap-and-draw commands.
Think of Spirit Tracks as a worthwhile follow-up for players who want a different mechanical emphasis, not as a duplicate voyage with new scenery. Its value depends on whether train logistics and two-character puzzles sound like an expansion of the formula you enjoyed.
Buying an original Nintendo DS cartridge
Both games are now commonly encountered as resale-market cartridges rather than ordinary new releases. Prices and stock change frequently, so a single quoted price would become unreliable quickly. Treat the listing, not an old price guide, as the current reference point, and verify the details before paying.
Check the game identity and region
- Confirm that the listing is for the exact game: Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks.
- Check the region printed on the cartridge and confirm that it matches the console and language expectations of the person who will play it.
- Ask for clear photographs of the front label, cartridge shell, and contacts rather than relying on a stock image.
Check authenticity and condition
- Look for a label that is aligned, printed clearly, and consistent with an original Nintendo DS release.
- Inspect the shell and connector contacts for damage, corrosion, heavy wear, or signs of tampering.
- Confirm that the seller accepts returns if the cartridge is counterfeit, defective, or materially different from the description.
Check the save function and completeness
- Ask whether the seller has tested starting a new game and saving, then loading that save.
- Decide whether you need only the cartridge or a complete package with case and inserts; completeness affects value but does not change the in-game mechanics.
- Prefer a seller with a clear condition grade, transaction history, and written return policy.
Do not assume that a higher price proves authenticity or that a low price is automatically a bargain. Region, condition, label quality, save reliability, completeness, and seller policy all matter more than an isolated number.
A practical decision checklist
- Picture your ideal journey. If you want to draw a line across open water, select Phantom Hourglass. If you want to choose rails and regulate a train, select Spirit Tracks.
- Choose your puzzle partner. For Link-centered stylus interaction, choose Phantom Hourglass. For Link plus a path-directed Phantom, choose Spirit Tracks.
- Decide how much structure you want. Island hopping offers a freer feeling; rail travel imposes a more directed route-planning framework.
- Pick a starting order. Start with the game whose traversal system sounds fun before considering release order.
- Verify any used copy. Check region, authenticity, condition, save function, completeness, and return terms before purchasing.
Final answer
For most players seeking the simpler recommendation, choose Phantom Hourglass for ocean sailing, island exploration, and a focused solo adventure. Choose Spirit Tracks when train route planning, speed and obstacle management, and Phantom-assisted dungeon puzzles are the features you actively want. The better Zelda DS game is the one whose transportation system you would enjoy using for the entire adventure.
