Phantom Blade Zero is a pre-release dark wuxia action RPG from S-GAME. You will play Soul, an assassin framed for killing his master and left with only 66 days to expose the conspiracy before a temporary cure fails. The game will combine fast martial-arts combat, mechanical and occult “Kungfupunk” world-building, and a connected set of handcrafted regions rather than a conventional seamless open world. It is listed for PlayStation 5 and PC, with a general release date of October 29, 2026; PlayStation and Steam show October 28 in the United States and some other regions.
What is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player action RPG set in the Phantom World, a dark fantasy interpretation of the martial underworld known as the Wulin. S-GAME describes it as the spiritual rebirth of Rainblood, the studio’s earlier game series. Its central design idea, “Kungfupunk,” combines wuxia storytelling and Chinese kung fu with punk fantasy, industrial machinery, mechanical prosthetics, occult practices, ruins and rock music.
The game is being presented as a focused action adventure rather than a conventional open-world role-playing game. Public descriptions have evolved from a 2023 explanation of a “semi-open world” made from several reasonably sized maps to a 2026 account of eight nonlinear, connected regions. Those descriptions are compatible: expect a handcrafted world with routes, secrets and revisitable areas, not one uninterrupted map stretching across an entire continent.
Because the game has not released as of October 16, 2026, weapon feel, performance, final mission structure and other hands-on qualities cannot be treated as independently verified. The details below are announced features and story information.
#1 Best Overall
- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What is the story?
Soul’s 66-day deadline
Soul is an assassin working for the Order, an organization embedded in the Wulin’s martial underworld. He is framed for murdering his master and is left gravely wounded. A temporary treatment keeps him alive, but only for 66 days. He must identify who engineered the betrayal, discover a way to survive and stop a conspiracy that threatens the wider martial world.
The 66-day limit is a story premise, not a real-world countdown or a published estimate of playtime. It gives the narrative a built-in pressure point: Soul is investigating his own death sentence while enemies and former allies may be deciding whether he remains useful.
Rainblood’s “spiritual rebirth”
In a developer-authored PlayStation Blog overview published May 24, 2023, S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang called Phantom Blade Zero “the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood.” Liang’s description positioned the new game as an expansion of that earlier creative identity, mixing Chinese martial arts, intricate machinery, occult arts and otherworldly elements rather than presenting a historically faithful wuxia setting.

The phrase should not be read as confirmation that players need to know the older games. The currently described protagonist, plot hook and world are presented as the basis for Phantom Blade Zero itself.
How is the world structured?
Eight connected regions
An August 2026 Epic Games Store report on the official deep dive describes eight nonlinear regions. Each is intended to contain its own combination of enemies, secrets, side quests, rare treasures and clues. “Nonlinear” suggests that progression will not simply be a straight sequence of corridors, although the available information does not specify how much freedom players will have to choose the order of every region.

The regions will connect into a larger Wulin journey. You should therefore expect transitions between distinct handcrafted spaces and opportunities to return to places where a newly acquired ability, weapon or clue changes what you can find.
Locations and activities
Published examples include valleys overrun by bandits, an abandoned warehouse with puppets hanging from its structure, imposing towers and lakes that can be crossed by speedboat. These examples indicate that the game will vary its traversal and combat spaces instead of relying only on traditional mountain paths or temple courtyards.

Interactions with citizens will also matter. PlayStation’s description says that conversations and some side quests may open new story paths and reveal more about the Wulin. The announced structure supports exploration with a purpose: optional routes can provide context and rewards as well as combat encounters.
Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?
Not in the usual seamless-open-world sense. The most precise current description is a connected, handcrafted world divided into eight nonlinear regions. In 2023, Liang called the structure “semi-open,” emphasizing multiple reasonably sized maps instead of one huge continuous landscape. The 2026 description adds the number of regions and their activities but does not announce a single uninterrupted map.
This distinction matters if you are deciding what kind of exploration to expect. The game should offer secrets, side quests, alternate paths and revisits, while keeping individual areas deliberately designed for encounters and discovery. No published source establishes the total land area, loading behavior between every region or unrestricted access to all eight regions from the beginning.

How will combat work?
A large, swappable arsenal
PlayStation’s 2026 deep-dive summary says the game will include more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Defeating some enemies will expand the arsenal. Weapons can be upgraded, paired with accessories and reforged so that upgrade materials can be recovered and reinvested elsewhere.
This system is designed for experimentation. Reforging should let you change direction without permanently wasting scarce materials, while accessories and the skill tree will allow a preferred weapon form to be tuned toward different techniques. The announcement does not yet provide a complete list of statistics, upgrade costs or maximum levels.
Announced weapon examples
| Weapon or technique | What has been announced |
|---|---|
| Drunken Sword | A named sword style in the announced arsenal. |
| White Serpent and Crimson Viper | Twin weapons intended to be used together. |
| Soft Snake Sword | A flexible sword with a distinct handling concept. |
| Iron fists | A close-range unarmed-style option. |
| Tiger Cannon | A named ranged weapon. |
| Flaming Mane | A named weapon or technique shown in the deep-dive descriptions. |
The game will also include summons and other ranged options. The published descriptions do not establish whether every weapon is available at once, whether loadouts can be changed during missions or how much ammunition or cooldown management ranged tools require.
Skill tree, forms and accessories
Epic’s report describes a skill tree and upgrades that unlock weapon forms and techniques. Combined with accessories, the system should let players build around a favored style rather than simply raising one universal damage number. The announced design points toward distinct combat identities—dual weapons, flexible blades, fists, firearms and other tools—while keeping the exact progression paths undisclosed until launch.
What are the difficulty modes?
Three named difficulty experiences have been announced. They differ in intended challenge and, in the harder modes, in enemy behavior rather than only in damage values.

| Mode | Published positioning | Distinctive behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | For players who primarily want to enjoy the story. | Presented as the accessible option; detailed enemy modifiers have not been stated. |
| Hellwalker | A more demanding experience. | Enemies use more advanced and adaptive intelligence. Epic reports that bosses adapt to the player’s style and attacks in real time. |
| Sixty-Six Days | The especially demanding challenge. | Each death removes one day from Soul’s remaining life, tying failure directly to the story’s 66-day premise. |
The names suggest three different ways to approach the campaign, but the sources do not say whether difficulty can be changed freely after starting, whether the death penalty can be disabled or how the final mode handles saves and checkpoints.
Why the game is called “Kungfupunk”
“Kungfupunk” is S-GAME’s label for the collision of wuxia martial-arts traditions with punk fantasy and machinery. The 2023 creative overview cites kung fu cinema, wuxia stories, occult elements and steampunk-like machines as influences. The result is not a historical China simulation: industrial ruins, prosthetic technology and supernatural practices sit alongside recognizable martial-arts aesthetics.
PlayStation’s product description emphasizes martial-arts choreography and motion capture. S-GAME also says Donnie Yen serves as a creative consultant and performs Mó Yuan using facial and motion capture. That makes Yen a contributor to the game’s presentation and a performer for Mó Yuan; he is not identified as the director, Soul’s performer or the sole creator of the combat system.
Liang’s older 2023 statement that combat moves had to use handcrafted animation because motion capture could not do them justice describes an earlier studio approach. It should not be taken to mean that motion capture is absent from the finished game, because the current PlayStation description explicitly mentions motion capture and martial-arts choreography.

PS5 controller and accessibility features
The PS5 listing advertises DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D Audio. It also identifies adjustable difficulty, offline pausing and manual saves. A second controller is not listed as required; those features describe support for the standard DualSense experience.
What is still unknown before launch?
- Final PC system requirements, frame-rate targets and resolution modes.
- The exact content and prices of standard and Deluxe editions in each region.
- Whether a physical PS5 release or licensed physical merchandise will be announced.
- How regions connect technically, how much backtracking is possible and whether all side quests remain available after major story events.
- The complete weapon list, upgrade limits, accessory effects and skill-tree layout.
- How difficulty switching, checkpoints and the Sixty-Six Days death penalty work in practice.
- Whether the Fortnite outfit promotion will be available in every country and for how long.
These gaps are normal for a game still awaiting release. They are also why announced weapon counts, region counts and feature lists should not be confused with independent performance testing.
