Which game should you play now?
Choose Black Myth: Wukong if availability matters most
Black Myth: Wukong is the only one of the two that is already released. PlayStation lists the PS5 version’s release date as August 20, 2024, and the release announcement identifies Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. Storefront availability, editions and pricing can differ by country and can change over time, so check the store attached to your platform before purchasing.

The official description highlights exploration, varied adversaries, character stories, transformations and magic vessels alongside combat. That makes Wukong the safer recommendation for someone choosing a game for this weekend, buying a present, or avoiding the uncertainty that accompanies a pre-release feature list.

Wait for Phantom Blade Zero if its concept is the stronger match
Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled for October 29, 2026 on S-Game’s official site. The PlayStation Blog’s August 17, 2026 deep dive adds that the date is October 28 in the US and select regions. Your local midnight release, digital storefront and physical availability may therefore use a different calendar date. The game is announced for PS5 and PC, and its PC specification page requires an SSD.
Its story follows Soul, a swordsman with a wounded heart who is framed for murdering his master. He has 66 days left to live and is hunted through the Wulin while trying to uncover a conspiracy. The official framing combines traditional wuxia with fantasy, folk horror and what S-Game calls “Kungfupunk.” If that darker martial-arts world sounds more appealing than a mythological Journey to the West, waiting is rational—but the recommendation is based on the announced concept, not a completed-game verdict.
Setting and story: mythic pilgrimage or dark wuxia conspiracy?
Black Myth: Wukong’s Journey to the West foundation
Wukong takes its identity from one of China’s best-known mythological traditions. PlayStation describes it as rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, with the player controlling the Destined One. The official page points to a world of mythological exploration, unusual enemies, transformations and magic vessels, and stories attached to characters you meet.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This gives the game a recognizable literary and mythological frame. You can reasonably expect the tone of the premise and imagery to be shaped by that source tradition, but the cited description does not establish that the game is open-world, a Soulslike or any particular playtime length. Those labels should not be treated as confirmed specifications from the pages listed here.
Phantom Blade Zero’s Wulin and Phantom World
Phantom Blade Zero is presented as a dark wuxia action RPG set in the Wulin and Phantom World. Soul’s 66-day deadline supplies urgency to the central investigation: after being framed for his master’s death, he must survive pursuit and expose the conspiracy behind it. S-Game’s description blends martial-arts tradition with fantasy and folk-horror elements rather than presenting a straightforward historical setting.

The setting is therefore a preference question, not a quality ranking. Pick the mythic, literary frame of Wukong if you want Journey to the West’s cultural foundation. Pick Phantom Blade Zero if a hunted swordsman, secretive martial world and horror-tinged fantasy are more compelling. Because Phantom Blade Zero has not launched as of October 13, 2026, its final storytelling pace, character depth and consistency cannot be judged from these announcements alone.
Combat and progression: what each game advertises
Wukong: staff techniques plus interchangeable abilities
PlayStation puts staff techniques at the center of Wukong’s combat and says you can freely combine spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. The same description mentions transformations and magic vessels, so the advertised toolkit is broader than a single weapon moveset. In practical terms, the appeal is building a response to an encounter from several categories—staff attacks, supernatural options, gear and temporary or form-changing powers.

The available description does not provide a numerical weapon count or a directly comparable list of build slots. Do not infer that Wukong has fewer meaningful options simply because its public summary emphasizes staff combat; the confirmed point is that its systems combine staff techniques with spells, abilities, weapons and equipment.
Phantom Blade Zero: a large announced weapon catalogue
In the August 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog deep dive, S-Game says Phantom Blade Zero will include more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. The post also describes weapon upgrades, accessories, summons and the ability to reforge an upgraded weapon while recovering materials. These are developer descriptions of planned features, not independent measurements of the final release.
That announced structure points toward a game where weapon selection and changing a build are central decisions. Reforging could matter to players who want to experiment without permanently losing upgrade materials, while accessories and summons suggest additional layers around the core weapon. The information does not establish how many weapons are available at launch in every edition, how balanced they are, or whether one setup will dominate; those are questions for final documentation and post-launch testing.

How to decide between the two combat philosophies
- Choose Wukong if you want a confirmed action RPG whose official pitch combines a staff, spells, abilities, equipment, transformations and magic vessels.
- Choose Phantom Blade Zero if the idea of switching among more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges, then upgrading or reforging them, is the feature that most attracts you.
- Do not choose on an assumed difficulty ranking. A larger announced arsenal does not prove deeper or more satisfying combat, and a staff-centered toolkit does not prove simplicity.
Difficulty options: what is confirmed and what is not
Phantom Blade Zero’s three named modes
S-Game describes three choices:
- Wayfarer: intended for players who mainly want to enjoy the story.
- Hellwalker: aimed at a greater challenge, with more adaptive enemy intelligence.
- Sixty-Six Days: described as an especially demanding mode.
PlayStation’s Phantom Blade Zero page also lists “Adjustable Difficulty (Basic)” as an accessibility feature. S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said, “Our range of difficulty options lets new players and even the most experienced action game veterans tailor the experience to their liking.” The statement explains the design goal, but it does not quantify damage, enemy health, checkpoint rules or how the modes compare with Wukong.
Why there is no fair difficulty winner yet
The official Wukong pages cited here do not establish a directly comparable named difficulty scale. That absence is not evidence that Wukong lacks challenge options, nor does it prove Phantom Blade Zero will be harder. The games may use different encounter design, progression systems and accessibility controls, so a mode name alone cannot settle which is more demanding.
If difficulty selection is your deciding factor, Phantom Blade Zero has the clearer announced menu. If you need to know how demanding either game feels in practice, wait for launch coverage that tests equivalent sections under documented settings rather than relying on labels.

Phantom Blade Zero platforms and date
PlayStation’s game page identifies Phantom Blade Zero for PS5 and PC. S-Game’s official site lists October 29, 2026; the PlayStation Blog says October 29 while noting October 28 in the US and select regions. Treat October 28 as a regional release-date note, not a universal date. Confirm the date shown by your local PlayStation or PC storefront.
For PC, S-Game’s requirements article is dated August 12, 2026. It says an SSD is required and lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and 16 GB of memory for both minimum and recommended configurations. The published targets include upscaling, so they are not promises of native-resolution performance.

Black Myth: Wukong platforms and readiness
PlayStation’s US listing identifies the PS5 version, one-player support and offline play, with an August 20, 2024 release date. A release announcement hosted on Steam names Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because storefront support, editions and prices vary by territory and date, verify the current listing for your region before purchasing. The cited material here does not provide PC hardware requirements that can be compared fairly with Phantom Blade Zero’s table.
Make the choice in five steps
- Decide whether you need a game immediately. If yes, select Black Myth: Wukong. Phantom Blade Zero is not yet available as of October 13, 2026.
- Choose the narrative frame. Select Wukong for Chinese mythology and Journey to the West; wait for Phantom Blade Zero for dark wuxia, folk horror and Soul’s conspiracy.
- Choose the combat emphasis. Wukong’s confirmed pitch is staff techniques combined with spells, abilities, weapons and equipment. Phantom Blade Zero’s announced pitch emphasizes more than 30 main weapons, 25 Phantom Edges, upgrades, reforging, accessories and summons.
- Check how you want difficulty handled. Phantom Blade Zero advertises Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days, plus adjustable difficulty. Do not translate those names into a direct ranking against Wukong.
- Confirm your hardware and storefront. For Phantom Blade Zero PC, verify Windows 10/11 64-bit, 16 GB memory, DirectX 12, an SSD and a graphics card near the published tier you want. For either game, check your local platform listing for the edition, date and price.
What cannot be decided from the announced information
- Whether Phantom Blade Zero’s combat is smoother, harder, deeper or more satisfying than Wukong’s.
- Which game has better performance, longer playtime, higher review scores or stronger sales; no comparable figures are established by the cited material.
- Whether Phantom Blade Zero’s more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges are all available at launch, equally viable or meaningfully distinct in practice.
- How Wukong’s combat options compare numerically with Phantom Blade Zero’s announced arsenal.
- Whether either game should be classified as open-world or a Soulslike; those labels are not supported by the cited official descriptions.
Those questions require a finished Phantom Blade Zero and like-for-like testing. Until then, treat its weapon counts, difficulty modes and PC targets as announced specifications rather than proof of play feel.
The bottom line for different players
Pick Black Myth: Wukong when you want certainty
Buy or play Wukong if you want an available action RPG now, own a supported platform, and prefer a mythological Journey to the West setting with staff combat augmented by spells, abilities, equipment, transformations and magic vessels. It is the straightforward answer for an immediate purchase.
Wait for Phantom Blade Zero when the announced design is your priority
Wait for Phantom Blade Zero if Soul’s dark wuxia investigation, the Wulin setting, a large announced weapon catalogue and selectable difficulty modes sound more appealing than Wukong’s mythic adventure. On PC, make sure the SSD and other published requirements fit your system, and remember that the October 29 date may appear as October 28 in the US and select regions.
Do not treat waiting as a verdict against Wukong
Phantom Blade Zero’s pre-release feature list cannot establish that it will outperform a released game. The sensible comparison today is preference plus readiness: Wukong is playable and documented as a released title, while Phantom Blade Zero is a promising but unproven option whose final balance, performance and moment-to-moment feel remain to be assessed after launch.
